Oh ffs. MPs must stop romanticising this absolute horseshit. Brexiters promised a land of milk and honey and delivered contaminated water and broken biscuits. We don’t want it. And we mustn’t be tied to failure and lies just because politicians want to cover up the utter mess they’ve made.

🧵 Wow - this article is bordering on unhinged! Apparently the BBC is akin to a “North Korean re-education camp” for teaching children about net-zero and covering both the pros AND cons of immigration Join me for a masterclass in cherry-picking and context stripping to brainwash your own readers👍🏻

Impartiality does NOT mean giving equal weight to science/facts/reality on the one hand and right-wing populist culture war BS on the other. Every section referenced actually DID give pros and cons, and difficult choices. The MoS ignored that and pretended it was one-sided.

Farage on BBC Breakfast again this morning. Thankfully, Sally Nugent is doing her best to hold him to account, but he can't answer a straight question and is still claiming to be the most targeted politician in the UK. Just more lies and dislike of scrutiny.

I think I might be able to assist. The Conservatives *know* that people are stupid. In particular, most of those who elect them.

Sturgella Nurbongler@strontium90.bsky.social

The Conservatives really think people are stupid. "Leaving the EU can't be to blame because it happened years ago" They know very well that the damage caused by Brexit is long-term and that it gets worse every year. So pinning the blame on Brexit is exactly what should be done.

A warming atmosphere holds more moisture. We warmed the atmosphere, now here come the floods. Just as predicted by physics. Odd how, whether you “believe” in science or not, it just keeps on happening.

We've spent ten years asking whether Brexit was a mistake. Perhaps that's the wrong question. The question is whether Britain would be better off inside or outside the EU over the next fifty years. We don't need to relitigate 2016 to make a decision about our future.

Worth noting that while Johnson and Hancock deservedly get much of the flak for this deadly failure, the minister who failed to protect the care sector was Helen Whately - who is now the Tory shadow minister pushing draconian benefit reforms

Ian Birrell@ianbirrell.bsky.social

The Covid inquiry confirms that social care was an 'afterthought' for the government in the pandemic, as I and others claimed at the time. This symbolises how Westminster always sees it as a second-class public service of far less importance than the NHS. Utterly shameful.

Jackdaw will not bring down bills or protect jobs. This is an irresponsible decision from a government that seems to care more about the profits of fossil fuel companies than the money in your pocket or the safety of our planet.

Tim Burnett reposted

Dreadful decision. The oil companies lied and lied about global warming. They knew what would happen but put profits first. This will not reduce your energy bills but will increase Shell’s profits. The plutocrats have won. Vote Green when you can like your life depends on it - because it does.

Zack Polanski@zackpolanski.bsky.social

Today's decision by Labour to approve new drilling in the North Sea is climate vandalism. It's a betrayal of all of our futures, and Labour has abandoned all credibility in the fight against climate change. This is a victory for Shell over the people. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cw...

Tim Burnett reposted

Government support for drilling at #Jackdaw takes a wrecking ball to any pretence of UK climate leadership & pours fuel on an overheating world - and for what? It’s equivalent to just 2 months of UK gas demand, creates just 27 direct jobs & has *no* impact on energy bills🧵1/4

This is damning. So much could could have been done at the time, with what was known about COVID, and with what what resources we had. It’s hard not to read callous neglect into these findings. And that intentional neglect was layered with lies - like the “protective ring” - which did not exist.

Kit Yates@kityates.bsky.social

The Inquiry’s overarching judgement is that fragmented responsibility, ignored warnings, poor data and inadequate planning created conditions in which Covid could spread “like wildfire”. Social care’s neglect was longstanding. During the pandemic, its consequences became catastrophic.
