Like the looming effects of the HE crises for communities and future students across the UK, the erosion of BBC expertise and programmes across everyday issues is something that may not look popular but whose absence will have felt effects on our politics - the kind Burnham is trying to counter.

Josiah Mortimer@josiahmortimer.bsky.social

The cuts being made at the BBC are unforgivable. They are putting it into a death spiral. The weaker it gets, the less people will want to support it. And yes, this is an issue for the Government, which likes to pretend it's not their problem. It is.

Breaking Burnham consults on making returnable milk bottles & daily milk floats compulsory (after the election) Ending the littering of paper & plastic containers. Glass-making & bottle-washing washing mega-factories to be built in -er- Manchester Full employment for at least 1,600 NEETS. Win-win

Free movement If all our young bright unemployed graduates flee to Europe, will that reduce the unemployment figures? But what about the poorer low-skilled from E Europe who arrive to do the low paid jobs our NEETS won’t do? Is there a net gain for the taxpayer?

Good to see Farage forced to fight for the unpopular & unwinnable Brexit issue. Unlike immigration, its clear blue water between sense and bigotry.

Great to get the homeless off the streets. But how come there are suddenly all these empty properties to house them? Why were they not available before?

Lorra news about Serbian election. How was so little made of the defeat of Victor Orban in April. & the new reformist govt in Hungary? Major change to EU functioning without a dinosaur in the fringe.

substack.com/@jodymcintyr... At age 17, David Garrard volunteered for military service with the IDF. According to the Times, the trip was the “start of a lifelong devotion to the state of Israel”. In 2015, Garrard gave Andy Burnham £35,000 as he attempted to take control of the Labour Party.

Looks like Weasely Streeting is now trying to unseat his co-conspirator Squealey Healey on the same old issue : Not enough real money to double defence spending overnight. So he is bigging up the risk of open war with Russia. Roles reversed. Irony +++ Never trust a traitor.

Free movement sounds virtuous. But who is likely to come & go? Comers: low pay low skill workers eg agriculture, carers Goers: young middle class graduates seeking well-paid jobs Neither good for our current working class unemployed or NEETS.

Breaking Burnham govt to issue ration books for spam and bogpaper to prevent a run on supplies prior to any possible emergency. Also Households urged to stockpile beer - ample stocks available at your local (Manchester) Wetherspoons.

I am uneasy about RAF Typhoons - expensive, risky - being used to support mega-rich Saudi Arabia, with its repressive regime & terrible human record in defending itself in complex ME wars Is it to suck up to Trump? Is it to support Israel? Is it to protect the oil supply? Is it the Big Oil lobby?

Barclays Bank to cut 5000 jobs? Soon they will only need a website saying “Computer Says No - Pay us £1,000 by Wednesday”. No staff, just a conduit to pay its CEO & shareholders £sqillion a week. Thames water is small fry by comparison.

Wndemere tunnel proposal to send sewage downstream a bit with a tunnel costing £3.7 billion ( probably doubling as there things do). Surely it must be cheaper to develop a local facility to purify the sewage enough to eliminate those unsightly green blooms?

Is Andy Burnham’s honeymoon perion coming to an end? Horrid international reality, noisy pressure groups and unpopular financial decisions are starting to dim the rosy glow of Hope. They sank Starmer. Can Burnham - or anyone - do better? Or is visceral unpopularity the price of power?

It’s not what you drill that damages the planet. It’s what you BURN. Sky-high prices & wars blocking production are already deterring world consumption. This makes a move to eco solutions financially attractive & viable. Eco warriors should rejoice as they fill their cars at £120 a tank.

Bloody water bots out again. I don’t need 200 reminders that water should be nationalised. I AGREE. I just have to block them all to see any other posts. Counterproductive. What is the algorithm playing at?

Until at least 4 mad tyrants pass away - & are not replaced with worse - the world is in constant deadly danger of wars & the meltdown of our familiar civilisation. Sadly, just now we do have to look to short-term defence & security even above wise long term progress.

Jackdaw decision does seem to be pragmatic, though bad optics. We do still need gas (what’s powering your computer right now?) & it’s there on our doorstep while the world is in chaos as mad autocrats bomb each others tankers & pipelines. Gotta just press ahead with alternatives as fast as possible.

What is the benefit to the UK taxpayer of Burnham's decision to commit RAF jets to defend Oil Rich dictatorship of Saudi Arabia in a war zone?

Listening to Newsnight about NEETS - there are not enough vacancies to absorb them & it’s getting worse - providing education, apprenticeships, mentoring, therapy etc costs imply high extra costs on top of welfare for basic living - there is no extra money for it. - culture is a waste of money.

I really think that MPs in the UK Parliament should be required to live full time in the UK and pay UK taxes so that they have a vested interest in which laws they are passing.

Here’s a new popular idea for St Andy. Make companies pay £1 a minute for keeping callers on hold for more than 10 minutes. £5 for cutting caller off. Mandate queuing and ringback options. Easy tweak to BT contracts. Would save millions of wasted hours hanging on listening to bad music.

I don’t want to defend arrogant, randy macho men. But fathers, please warn your daughters about the unwisdom of going into the bedrooms of celebrities & top footballers.

I agree that Thames water should be nationalised. I DONT agree to having 150 identical posts a day telling me so. They just get blocked or muted.

Anyone watching the French riots should reflect on the risks of a govt imposing austerities on education, cost of living, fuel costs. Ok it’s more of a French tradition, but we have had dissent & public riots here too, & could again if the public mood turns sour. It can easily be whipped up again.

How come well-loved & useful companies like Woolworths, HMV, Wilco, Poundland etc can go broke & disappear so easily at great cost to their shareholders and creditors. But never water companies?

This reposting is getting out of hand. I don’t want my feed infested by 150 identical posts for some interest group, currently Pro-Palestine & pro Trans. Like, comment, praise a good cause but don’t mindlessly re-re-repost. I just get put off their cause and block every poster after the second.

You don’t need to be pro-Palestinian to tell Netanyahu & all his supporters everywhere that their actions in Gaza, Lebanon & Iran are abhorrent, vile, evil, tyrannical, genocidal, murderous, inhuman etc etc. Nor to stop selling arms to enable them to keep at it. That’s not antisemitic. Just decent.

Water If a company’s debts exceed its assets & it’s present & future income is insufficient to pay the interest, doesn’t that mean it is insolvent & its shares are now worthless & its debts are in default? £1 sale to the govt seems the obvious course of action.
