Ahead of tomorrow's budget statement. Here’s how the UK chancellor can raise the billions needed to improve the quality of life of millions by addressing tax and fiscal anomalies. There is no shortage of money. All that is needed is the political will.

HSBC quarterly pre-tax profits surge 32% to $9.6bn (£7.14bn). Banks receive bailouts, subsidies, pay measly return to savers, hike charges, rely on the state as lender of the last resort but threaten retaliation if taxed. Must levy windfall tax.

Here’s a radical option: fully nationalise all water companies.

Insolvency scam The boss of twice-bust business back despite £3m debts. These people gut a company, HMRC and creditors not paid. Then buy assets cheaply from the administrator in pre-packs, and back in business. Gone on for decades. No transparency of administrator dealings. No investigation.

UK govt can get information about your bank accounts if you get universal credit, pension credit, employment support allowance. Court order not needed. You won't be told, can't appeal. Same won't apply to enablers of illicit financial flows. No financial privacy for old, poor, sick, unfortunate.

NHS bosses say smaller maternity units may have to close. It would force pregnant mothers to travel long distances to give birth. How safe would that be? Local services are always more timely. Financial numbers must not override human considerations.

The Sovereign Grant to the King doesn’t count as taxable income. Payments by the state to Britons, such as the state pension, carer’s allowance, contribution-based jobseeker’s allowance, and contribution-based employment and support allowance are taxable. That's the law.
