The gold standard for producing PDF documents (especially books and journal articles) has been LaTeX. @typst.app re-engineered the entire process in an incredibly elegant extensible way. On my MacOS LaTeX (TexLive) takes 9.1GB of disk space. Typst takes 43MB. Not a misprint.

Join our community call today at 5pm CEST, 11am ET to hear about our current and future plans, to learn more about planned changes to math, and to get your questions answered by the team. (we also released Typst 0.15.1 with some bugfixes today, so it's a busy day)

I finished translating my CV from a complex mess of LaTeX constructions to a clean and much simpler @typst.app document. Typst handles multiple bibliographies out of the box, among other things. It also instantly processes BibTeX files without creating auxiliary files sub as .bbl.

and here‘s your daily maths-pop culture crossover brought to you by yours truly

And a single PDF document exported by Typst can now comply with multiple PDF standards. Optimize for long-term storage (e.g. PDF/A-2a) and universal accessibility (PDF/UA-1) at the same time.

Further improvements in Typst 0.15 include support for maths in HTML using MathML, providing more tools to fix the dreaded "layout did not converge within five attempts" warning, fixing longstanding issues with list layout, and more.

But typeface design is not the only thing you can have more of. With the new, experimental bundle export, a single Typst file can produce multiple output files. Use this to build your website from a single Typst project.

Documents can now also contain more than one bibliography: You can create bibliographies by chapter or, using multiple reference files, by topic. You can also use selectors to customize which reference goes where.

We added support for variable fonts: Using a variable font, you can customize weight, stretch, and more of a typeface design beyond what presets fonts usually come with. We also added many variable fonts to our web app.

We know some of you nerds installed the Apple prerelases yesterday. We dare you to do the same today (Typst 0.15 RC1 is available).

Test for compatibility with your projects now, locally or in the web app. Typst 0.15 has variable font support, MathML, multiple bibliographies, and a print version of the docs.

Tune in today at 16:20 CEST, 10:20 EDT to learn how Typst achieves best-in-class performance and dive deeper into the implementation of the Typst compiler in the @rustnl.bsky.social RustWeek talk of Typst founder Laurenz Mädje.

We know that many of you are doing some of your best work with Typst. To prevent hackers from hijacking your Typst account, you should enable the new two-factor authentication feature.

A second authentication factor protects your Typst account even if a hacker has your password or access to your email inbox. To enable 2FA, you need a code generator app. Your password manager or device may already include one. Alternatively, you can download one from your phone's app store.

You can enable 2FA by signing in to Typst and going to the "Multi-factor authentication" section of your account settings.

okay. wow. i am late to the @typst.app party and i regret every line of latex i've written since i heard about it. problems it solved for me in a matter of seconds that require insane hoop-jumps in latex:

Typst was unavailable today, from approximately 11:45 to 13:15 CET, due to a backend failure. The service is now fully restored. We're very sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Apparently, arXiv has been looking into adding support for @typst.app! I had idle hands during a day off, so I wrote up a template for the Open Journal @ojastro.bsky.social that is fairly complete with features (see image). It can actually do a bit more than the LaTeX template, from Typst!

Did you know that arXiv is exploring to add Typst? The world's largest preprint archive faces unique challenges to keep science open. Join arXiv veteran Norbert Preining and learn what's ahead for arXiv and Typst. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNZl...

And with that, we have published the final meetup talk video. Thanks again to all of the presenters and to our community for engaging. You shape the future of Typst!

We have noticed that the audio on this video is broken: It gets progressively more silent. Please excuse the mistake. We are currently reuploading a version with fixed audio. During that time, the old video is unlisted.

RustWeek really makes it sound very salacious

Accessibility in Typst works, even if it runs under the hood for Quarto :)

Andrew Heiss@andrew.heiss.phd

If you use #QuartoPub for any PDF documents for teaching and you need to meet impending PDF accessibility rules, upgrade to v1.9, add format: typst: pdf-standard: ua-1 to the YAML front matter, and it'll work!
