the fact that people from all corners of the earth are talking to me about sovereign desktop initiatives leaves me both hopeful and paranoid. please let this not be the “hey, i wrote a mastodon client too” moment for the free desktop.

I've added a small solid half-tile in there which you can use to create these shadows. In my example I just drew those tiles on a seperate layer and lowered the opacity of the layer. Tiled is what I always use for these examples and is something I would massively recommend (free): www.mapeditor.org

It's wild how we have deluded ourselves into believing that such a thing as an "international non-profit/organization/company" exists when it's just always, in practice, meant that it's a US entity

some of us, otoh, would prefer that open source and open data made capitalism suck less. this is (or may/will be) true of open weight models, it seems? drain the moats, sell services not products, make a thing people want, embrace commodity. software sold like rice and carpentry

If I could clone myself, me #3 would be doing a lot on reading how to make this more true. I assume there is a parallel literature to Erik Olin Wright’s work on Real Utopias on the tools and ways capitalism co-opts movements (like unions and environmentalism) and how to resist that.

tell me it’s a life goal of yours to “destroy capitalism” if you’d like to convince me you’re fighting a losing battle that will leave you jaded and bound to become tomorrow the thing you hate today. “upend human behaviour” is hubris but “build something beautiful” is well within our power

For a variety of reasons we’ve never really defined free/open/liberatory/empowering software in terms of *features*. I wonder now what that would look like.

Operations is systems architecture with humans as nodes. If volunteers must ask the lead organizer for permission to solve every small crisis, your system design has failed. Decentralize authority early.

I've yet to see even one single outlet question the framing here. Not one. Nobody seems to realize that agents don't "hack on their own". People run them, give them permissions, give them goals and constraints. Those people are the ones responsible here.

did you know it’s possible to have an attractive, simple computer that’s not full of ads and garbage and planned obsolescence? more true now than ever, despite what you may have heard in the news.

And for your own mental health and wellbeing; don't go into lengthy internet discussions you know will have no outcome. Instead, block & mute. Those are the tools that'll bring you peace, and sends a clear message to those that don't want the best for you or our community.

You know, honestly, more than monetary donations, if somebody worked at a company that had access to a lot of 18 terabyte and larger hard drives and could talk to us, that's where we are really suffering. The internet archive has no special priority in buying hard drives and those things are insane.

The ongoing 429 errors are due to a variety of infrastructure issues and repairs being done on Wayback. Sorry, folks

i started an off-grid cabin coop with some friends back in 2010. the application process was on paper, and mailed in. it prevented low-effort entries completely. i look forward to open source projects taking this approach. “your first patch can be printed out and mailed to this p.o. box for review”

watching someone in a supervisory/pm role drop 100s of small-ish bugfix commits into a repo he’s never committed to as long as i’ve followed the project. maintainer is nowhere to be seen. the pm is technical. i actually have no predictions for how this ultimately plays out. but… huh.

i’ve been thinking about starting a passive-aggressive web comic about open source software. it will be black and white and not contain any jokes. because i’m a fun person.

the fact that "rare books" often means "rare texts" is a policy outcome of our copyright law and it doesn't need to be that way
