Obsessed Spreadsheeter (ist? izer?). Likes old anime dubs, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and that weird sticky goo that holds magazine inserts in place. Frequently wrong.

These liner notes aren't the most words I've said about The Big O, but it's the most I've ever said about The Big O There are plenty of deep, D E E P cuts in here and clarification of some common and widespread misconceptions!

That's a lot of notes.

Neat seeing a fancy logo for Tatsunoko’s 65th anniversary on Outlanders and Speed Racer. I wonder if any other western-market anime releases will have it before 2026 ends.

Reminder that advertising and editorial are completely siloed from each other at ANN. I'm as disappointed as anyone else to see this on the feed.

Really not happy to see ANN running an advertorial for an AI company.

One of my favorite cases of weird disc reuse. Bandai originally released Blue Sub No.6 on 4 DVD-5s. For the “special edition” box set, they reduced this to 3, and added a bunch of extras only authoring one new disc. How? They reused the singles, but as 2 double-sided discs (plus a bonus disc)

Looking into it, it appears that Impact Video likely managed to get out the entire series over 13 DVDs. Neat. Always super cool to see an English-language anime DVD from a country you don't normally think has an anime home video market like South Africa or India. web.archive.org/web/20101124...

Additionally,if anybody knows which episodes are on these UK-market VHS tapes, and if Harmony Gold edited them in anyway, I'd greatly appreciate it. #1 and #2 are 88 minutes, #3 and #4 are 65 minutes. I'm attempting to document the home video history of Speed Racer, and it's slowly driving me insane

Interesting discovery: At some point in the late 80s, Harmony Gold was distributing Speed Racer for Trans-Lux in the UK. This is a fascinating discovery, because it may provide the missing link for how Speed Racer Enterprises came to be (1/5)

My assumption is that the 65 minute ones are The Most Dangerous Race (eps 9-11), but I have no idea if Harmony Gold edited it down for time. As for the 88 minute ones, I have no idea. That would cover The Great Plan and Challenge of the Masked Racer (eps 1-4), so maybe it's those?

Either was looking to sell or decided not to renew their license, of course Tatsunoko would go to Harmony Gold first. As for why they passed on US rights, I'm not sure, but I have heard that the attempts to sell the series in the UK didn't exactly take off, so maybe they passed? (4/5)

Rocknowski recognized that unlike the UK, the US actually had some nostalgia for Speed Racer that could be exploited, and thus, SRE came to be. Of course, if anyone has any other good sources on the foundation of SRE, please let me know! It's anime history! (And I may be obsessed)

In 1991, Trans-Lux would sell the rights to John Rocknowski, who would establish Speed Racer Enterprises, and would control the rights to the series into the 2010s. What I didn't mention was that in 1991, Rocknowski was an employee of Harmony Gold! (2/5)

While I've certainly not read every single interview and feature that SRE ever put out, I was never able to figure out how the rights to Speed Racer just fell into Rocknowski's lap, but these UK tapes serve as the missing link! His employer already had UK rights, so when Trans-Lux... (3/5)

So what exactly is the point of giving GKIDS store exclusives MSRPs if they’re only ever sold on “discount” on the GKIDS store? It’s actually impossible to pay $59.99 for Angel’s Egg, so are they really allowed to say that’s the actual price?

Dooby-Scoo has arrived. WB missed a golden opportunity to put Hotdog Water on the 6th disc for the joke. Someone ironic to say it’s part of the “Hanna-Barbera” collection considering both William Hanna and Joseph Barbera *hated* Mystery Inc.

Super excited to see them go back and license Kino’s Journey. Not often we get classic LNs licensed. Back in the day, Tokyopop put out 1 out-of-order compilation volume before giving up due to “issues with the licensor”

The very odd phrasing of this announcement makes me wonder if it’s an iffy translation or there’s some strange legal situation where the movie as a product (or physical product) cannot be sold. Like, streaming is okay but no blurays or if this just means the characters and music can be used.

It’s not split over 12 discs, huzzah
