The thing that makes me the sickest is that these folks don’t even have a shred of compassion. It’s one thing to enforce laws and rules. It’s another to do it gleefully and celebrate the suffering of someone born into poverty and desperation

“ABC7 spoke to Pertissue Fisher, a woman who lives in the building. She said ICE agents took everyone in the building, including her, and asked questions later….’They was bringing the kids down, too, had them zip tied to each other.’” It can’t happen here, you say. But it is happening.

Just the paramilitary secret police manhandling an opposition political candidate.

moments ago, ice agents again came out of the broadview detention/“professing” facility to escort a silver suv out of the lot. one of the agents picked up and threw congressional candidate kat abughazaleh to the ground.

Looks like every single one of my books; and my wife’s, are there

If you're an author and haven't yet signed up for the Anthropic settlement, do yourself a favor (and strike a blow against AI) by checking to see if any of your books were involved. www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

The person heading the House of Representatives doesn’t know what to do other than pray

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Mike Johnson on Texas floods: "In a moment like this, we feel just as helpless as everyone else does ... all we know to do at this moment is pray."

Not joking about this at all: if someone thinks it's appropriate to be cruel about young children drowning in a flash flood because it happened in a red state, they should not be allowed indoors. They should be out in the forest burying their own scat

"By militarizing ... in L.A., Trump is goading Americans more generally to take him on in the streets of their own cities, thus enabling his attacks on their constitutional freedoms. As I’ve listened to him and his advisers over the past several days, they seem almost eager for public violence."

I know everyone's been breathlessly waiting for what I was going to write about LA. here you go - gifted www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

They’ve been saying it privately for 10 years. If they haven’t found their voice yet they never will

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Mark Warner on Republicans: "I do think we're getting close to them stepping up, but the problem is going to be, how much structural damage is going to be done before my Republican friends find their voice and voice publicly what they're already saying privately?"

I almost never post about my own religious beliefs. This article perfectly describes the faith I believe in. I got about a quarter of the way through and the story of redemption brought me to tears.

Gift article, you won’t have to have a subscription to read. Jesus wasn’t about judgement and finger pointing. He was about redemption and love. My own life was filled with some secret, awful things. And the realization that I was worthy of grace and forgiveness means everything

Reminder that British and French troops deployed in support of the US the only time in history Article 5 was invoked

Mark Chadbourn@chadbourn.bsky.social

Vance tells Fox the only US security guarantee in Ukraine will be the mineral deal. And he describes British and French peacekeeping troops as “20k troops from some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 30 or 40 years”.

This is obscene.

A VA psychologist friend reached out today. Her job is at a VA in the heartland. Her job, in my view, is helping veterans with post traumatic stress stay alive. She is one of the hundreds of thousands of federal employees who has been encouraged to resign… open.substack.com/pub/jaketapp...

As a Marine Corps veteran and VA patient, I know firsthand how critical the VA is to our community. Today, I’m amplifying a powerful statement from @senatorblumenthal.bsky.social on the dangerous gaps in Trump’s VA hiring freeze exemptions. #VeteransDeserveBetter 🧵

I can’t count the hours of overtime I worked in the lead up. But it nearly doubled my income in 1999. And we still ran into trouble with our billing system on January 1, 2000.

Julian Sanchez@normative.bsky.social

Sigh. It wasn’t a nonevent BUT we took it seriously. It was a nonevent BECAUSE we took it seriously. Same dangerous attitude I’ve seen about ozone layer deterioration: if a major campaign of concerted action averted the problem, it must have been a fake problem. Not the correct lesson to draw!

According to Korean constitutional law, if martial law is declared in a state of non-war, the National Assembly can vote to make the president stand it down. The National Assembly is gathering now. We are just now getting footage of inside the National Assembly.

As much as I may agree, the idea that a Trump Justice Department will investigate Trump is somewhat less than zero

A couple years ago I read Colson Whitehead’s Nickel Boys, based on the same school. Devastating reading, even more so because I had -never heard of the place- Adding this to my to-read list tonight
