Not joking about this at all: if someone thinks it's appropriate to be cruel about young children drowning in a flash flood because it happened in a red state, they should not be allowed indoors. They should be out in the forest burying their own scat

I don’t think anyone’s joking about this tragedy that I have seen- I have seen people pointing out this tragedy is a foreseeable result of gutting the National weather service

I think though you are correct in that it is very hard to feel empathy when people chose to vote for someone who tried to overthrow the gov, a convicted felon, chronic sexual abuser, campaigned on the horrible things he is doing and said 3 times “ maybe you won’t have to vote anymore”

I always take it as pointed at the felon rather than the people who are experiencing the tragedy but I see your point. I do think certain cases such as the gentleman who voted for Trump, still supports Trump after watching his wife be deported are exceptions

I'm often the first to say "leopards having a feast" or "that's what they voted for" in cases like that fired federal worker who voted for Trump in 2024 after backing Biden in 2020. But this is a completely different (and far more tragic) situation for reasons I don't think I need to explain.

In case you guys don’t see this, all of this is the plan. Turn the people on themselves, so they are too busy to fight the govt. it’s wrote. Don’t play into it! Anyone who delights in the suffering of anyone else, especially children, is a piece of shit. And we’re all turning into shit now.

Now if only we can get half of the country to care about kids that barely speak one language that is different than their own, with skin color that is different. Because those children are clearly not regarded as human by conservatives, and especially not this administration.

You have to be sad. For one thing, children don't vote, but in this case suffer the consequences of voting in this regime. Hopefully the tragedy will wake up the adults in the region so that they vote for progressive candidates.

It’s not cruel to point out that 1) higher licensing standards, 2) better weather forecasting, 3) more first responder capacity 4) reduced fossil fuel consumption, & better geographical surveys All could have resulted in less death and trauma. It’s factual and helpful to prevent future tragedies.

I was told yesterday to “speak louder then” how? TX Republicans crafted one of the most politically and racially skewed maps redistricting. Gerrymandering gives GOP a 5 seat advantage in TX. More people voted for Harris in TX than in NYC. There are millions of us here who don’t want this.

Certainly could be! But if he's a troll, he still "thinks it's appropriate to be cruel about young children drowning" etc., *but as a pastime* rather than a sincere declaration of belief. I don't think that's any less deserving of social censure. (For instance, exile to the Scat Forest.)

Considering the right wing trash that comes from Texas it's understandable folks feel justified in inappropriate comments. I would prefer red states suffer instead of blue states. It seems appropriate to me. I do feel for the families involved, it's tragic in many ways

You're assuming a lot about the people who live here. Did the river check the voting records of all the 30+ people who died, and/or of the parents of the girls who died? Why does "red state"/"blue state" nonsense even matter? Stop talking about things you don't understand and fix your heart.

Not excusing anyone being brutal but we've been shouting to the rooftops that something like this would happen and all we got for it was to be ignored or called names. The drowned children are political fodder and goddammit, we told you this would happen! Worse, this is just the beginning.

Yes: nevertheless, while grieving the appalling loss of lives and property, it is perfectly valid to point out that this was a result of climate change and extreme events like this are going to become more common. On behalf of those that died, we are obliged to take it up to climate change deniers.

I haven’t been seeing it either ? But I rabidly block and mute and report troll accounts and nastiness bots. Yes, there are bot farms popping up whose purpose seems to be to sow dissension and cause arguments and general unpleasantness.

I certainly feel deep sadness for these children, but can't help but wonder if they may be better off, not having to grow up under Nazi rule -- or are we going to change that?

It's not so simple to classify Texas as a "red state." We have 30 million people and a huge number of Democrats. We're on par with New York on that. But even if we were nothing but Rs, what happened along the Guadalupe River is a huge tragedy. The deaths of children warrants nothing but sympathy.

Citing the raw vote count instead of normalizing by total votes or total eligible voters is silly. It's equally true that Texas actually gave Trump the largest number of votes of any state in 2024 and the state gave him the second most in 2020

I read the replies to lots of threads, ppl are upset abt Trump/GOP causing tragedies without EVER getting ANY accountability. They destroyed NOAA/NWS; they killed those kids! Ppl R very sad abt the kids! Big difference.

They didn't kill those kids. NWS worked and successfully identified the storm, it just happened late at night. That's a big part of the problem with using those dead kids to make your point -- it doesn't even make your point, it just makes it clear you don't know the facts on the ground.

Ian you know who doesn’t gaf about those children? It’s the Moral Majority calling themselves Christian’s. Get off your high horse cause if GOP fuckers gave a good gd they wouldnt have gutted the weather service would they have? Im so tired of this. It is not the left it is the right, the whole

conservative hypocritical bunch of the GOP and MAGAts go yell at them! They are the ones who are letting children starve to death, be bombed by Russia and Israel. They’re the one sending children to cages. The fucking evangelicals are all little anti-christs seeking whom they may devour 🤬

Apparently it is a strange notion to never enjoy human suffering. Especially children? I never understood this kind of hate. I have strong opinions. I know some people I would be ok with if they did not exist, but even those I do not hate to the point of celebrating pain, suffering and death.

Ian, perhaps you could agree that calling attention to the gross, perverse and intentional failure of the state and federal officials whose policies and actions led to the conditions that caused this tragedy is neither cruel nor uncivilized, but exactly the opposite, and may avert the next one?

Missing the point mate. It’s not about “the people who think like me shouldn’t suffer”. It’s about “no children should die and nobody should be celebrate the death of any children”. It’s not even empathy 101, it’s humanity 101.

it’s horrifically sad and we should all be paying attention because these things are exactly the type things emergency federal services are needed for, what they were designed to help with no matter what majority party the state may be.

Agree. People are so furious at the Trump horrors, and especially the glee with which his asshole supporters watch people suffer. It is hard to not wish them something awful in return. That's the next fascist move: making you hate your neighbors.

than if you believe that the state it occurred in doesn’t matter than I suppose you would have to consider that it may be you. the next time, or the time after, or after that. But eventually. I think weather will indeed rule the earth. I just hate pretending we aren’t accountable for the harm.

Okay I agree that cheering for the death of children- Anybody’s children is wrong. But watching Texans vote time after time for brutal monsters like Abbot and Paxton - makes me so sick that I forget about my humanity. No, every Texan didn’t deserve what happened but the MAGAmorons deserved it

99% of the time the people who talk shit about "Red States" or "The South" are just racists. Like, oh please tell me more about how the only large majority Black areas and 2/3rds of majority Latinx areas in the US should be thrown out of the Union😊

It doesn’t matter if the increased in preventable human lives from disasters are in blue or red states. It’s anguishing and infuriating at the same time. No room for cruelty, just action.

It’s like when people say Palestinians don’t deserve LGBTQ+ people’s support because Palestine is homophobic. As if a) children have any control over the society they live in, b) it’s literally everyone there and c) that in any way justifies indiscriminate mass deaths.

Unfortunately because the Internet needs clarification nowadays,we definitely need to recognize people historically having more risk to violence than others because of their race/ identity & how privilege plays into society. That being said,I refuse to have my fear of being harmed to cheer harm.Nope.

When you hate a group so much that you cannot feel empathy for their children, what's the point of even trying to preserve humanity? It seems to be a problem in many places around the world. Our children deserve better, we should treat every child as our own, and then treat their parents accordingly

As the duly appointed representative of the forest, I am once again asking civilization to stop sending us your unwanted trash. You made them mean, you deal with them.

How often have we heard this exact statement except it's god smiting the queers? And not from internet trolls but from leaders of the Christian faith.

I am so tired of hearing people cheering on the suffering of people in red states. I understand the frustration, truly, but just because someone might show hatred or cruelty towards me doesn't mean that I will return it in kind. We are not the same.

Yes. To me the basic disconnect in our society is lack of empathy. Whether it’s due to politics or race or whatever else. Losing your compassion is losing the thing that the “other side” can never take away from you - you can only take it away from yourself.

I do feel sympathy for the victims of this tragedy and extend condolences to the families. This will happen over and over with what the Republicans have done to the Fed Govt - a fact which MUST be broadcast loudly and repeatedly!
