There are a number of reasons why retail electricity prices are going up, including aging fossil fuel power plants setting the marginal wholesale price, but the most obvious reason is investor owned utilities who are obliged to increase shareholder profits every year.

Two neighbors live less than 2,000 feet apart. One pays up to $500/month for electricity. The other averages $130. One has investor-owned National Grid. The other by a municipal utility. @popovichn.bsky.social and I dug into America’s widening power bill divide: www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

1) Dominion still has a demand-side problem from the data centers. 2) They're making excuses in 2026 for why they can't meet the 2045 VCEA requirements. A multi-trillion-dollar data center industry profiting from a multi-billion-dollar utility profiting in turn puts us last and shareholders first.

Pressed by the soaring cost of buying electricity from others, Dominion Energy sees its path forward needing a 21% increase in solar facilities and a 76% increase in battery storage from the additions proposed in last year’s update.

Peter Cary’s excellent 20-part series: “The New Energy Crisis,” a deep dive into Data Center Alley, comes to a close with a disturbing conclusion: energy supply could potentially fail to catch up with data center demand for more than a decade, with regular power outages becoming our new reality.

A simple idea for regulating data center mania: "No large data center...should receive the permits or grid connection it needs unless its developer brings enough new carbon-free generation, energy storage and transmission online to meet its additional electricity demand—and pays the full cost."

Today, I released the Energy Costs Listening Tour Report, documenting those discussions and the research that followed. My conclusion: the proposed takeover of Dominion Energy by NextEra is not in the best interest of Virginians. Read the Energy Costs Listening Tour Report at vaenergytour.com.

A functioning regulatory system would include frequent, randomized spot checks, done regularly by well-funded civil servants using modern technology, plus consequences - fines or jail time - serious enough to actually prevent polluters from sickening or killing nearby people.
