My latest for National Geographic looks at the 131 new Hittite cuneiform tablets unearthed at Šamuḫa (c. 1400 BCE) & what they tell us about everything from augury to an epidemic that killed Hittite children. Thx to @digkabri.bsky.social, Theo van den Hout, @knpazuzu.bsky.social & ISAC for aid. 🪏

the number of “yes on 42, no on 40” ads I’m seeing here in LA is depressing remember: yes on the billionaire tax (40), no on the ones canceling the billionaire tax (41 and 42)

And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and his certificate chain was valid.

ok non-tech ppl might be hearing some scary things about "critical vulnerabilities" involving certificates. the main thing you need to know, without getting down in the weeds about it, is that the fourth seal is broken. lo, a rider approacheth upon a pale steed, and his name is Death

To be frank, this is approaching Charles I's attempt to arrest the Five Members in 1642 and we ought to treat it with the same gravity. And perhaps remind those involved how things turned out for Charles I after 'all his birds had flown.' How about we not restage this particular episode?

Every single time I posted political content with no exception I got a lot of hateful/angry comments on Instagram. Yesterday I posted about the student protests in France so I was kinda expecting some insults, and… Nothing. Just 200+ nice comments. I wonder if it could be connected to this.

San Diego/OC friends: check your local weather forecasts this weekend. Tropical Storm Rachel looks like it *may* take a more northward track which could bring strong winds and (two feet more) (!) of coastal flooding to the region Saturday night to Sunday.

Got our vaccines Wednesday night - Covid, flu, and RSV. Not as bad as I anticipated, tbh. Spouse had some arm swelling and maybe a touch of fever. I've felt just a touch off yesterday and today, but nothing worse than that. Yay immune systems!

Kasey Gifford@kaseygifford.bsky.social

Wow. LOISH got accused of using Ai to make her art. I started following her on early deviantart. I remember first seeing her paintings in college. This is ridiculous, no one is safe. Artists Ive followed for actual decades are getting harassed because their work has been stolen and regurgitated.

I don't think a direct confrontation is how it would happen. More like, the AI needs land for more solar cells, buys and eventually expropriates lots of arable land. Food gets expensive and people starve. There are subtler ways to compete for resources than all-out armed conflict.
