A glimpse into the Milky Way’s past 👀 Travel 19 000 light-years towards the heart of our galaxy and meet the star cluster Terzan 5. Terzan 5 is regarded as a fossilised remnant of the early Milky Way. Discover why: https://www.eso.org/public/news/eso1630/ 🔭

I've been rereading #TheExpanse lately, and I've wondered whether there's any overarching idea that the entire story dramatizes. The best I've come up with so far is that, historically speaking, control over resources drives human conflict. That's historical materialism in a nutshell. #Sci-fi

I just hit my favorite curb-stomping space brawl of all time: Bobby v. Amos. The novel does a terrific job at foreshadowing and layering in the subtext that underwrites every punch, but my investment in the characters really makes this scene leap from the page. #Sci-fi #TheExpanse

But when we crave power over life—endless wealth, unassailable safety, immortality—then desire becomes greed. And if knowledge allies itself to that greed, then comes evil. Then the balance of the world is swayed, and ruin weighs heavy in the scale.

Ursula K. Le Guin was born #OTD in 1929. First female author to win both the Nebula & Hugo awards for Best Novel for "The Left Hand of Darkness," 1970. In total, she won 8 Hugo & 6 Nebula awards. Second woman Grand Master of the #ScienceFiction & Fantasy Writers of America. #SciFi #LitSky #BookSky

I picked this one off the shelf to reread the final chapters after I realized that the current #sci-fi WIP is definitely about more than nano-zombies. #WritingCommunity #Physics

I’m sure Marco Murderpants has something to say about this. #Sci-fi #TheExpanse

For the new #sci-fi #horror WIP, I dramatize ecophagy: self-replicating nanotech devours, well, everything. Interesting metaphor. But I've added a few lurid twists. And to stir the drink, I use time-crystals. I just finished Act 1, clocking 20k. Shack on target. #WritingCommunity #AmWriting

Dr. Mae Jemison was born #OTD in 1956. In 1992, she launched into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour making her the first Black woman to travel into space. 🚀 An incredible life: + Physician (M.D., Cornell 1981) + Peace Corps Area Medical Officer in Sierra Leone & Liberia #WomenInSTEM

Rereading #TheExpanse. Here's a bit from Babylon's Ashes, Avasarala on leg day: "That's eleven," Pieter said. "Go for twelve. One more." "Fuck your mother." "Come on. Just one more rep. I'll be there to help. "You're an asshole and nobody loves you," she gasped, lowering her head. #Sci-fi

Star Trek (1966) "The MIT Museum unveiled an extraordinary piece of television and cultural history: the original 33-inch Starship Enterprise model that helped define sci-fi and sparked generations of scientific ambition." It will remain on public display at the Museum through March 28, 2027. 🔽

From a student essay on GenAI: "Human written stories are valuable not only because they can entertain readers, but also because they allow readers to connect with another person’s creativity, thoughts, imagination, and individual point of view." You said it, kiddo. #WritingCommunity

As an author perhaps more directly involved with the adaptation of his own work than anyone else in my generation, this service is a bad idea. You think we suck trying to design our own covers? Wait‘ll you see our cinematography. Also, AI is a bad tool.

I woke up thinking about this guy today. James Callis played Gaius Baltar magnificently—the arc from scientist to politician to prophet was sweeping. And believable. I think that arc began with the improvised line, “No more Mr. Nice Gaius!” #Sci-fi #BSG

According to MIT News, Margaret Hamilton died at the age of 90. "A profoundly influential computer scientist best known for leading the software engineering team at MIT’s Instrumentation Lab during NASA’s Apollo program". This famous photo 🔽 inspired the For All Mankind character Margo Madison.

ah damn, RIP Margaret Hamilton. she took safety-critical software engineering seriously, and got people to the moon and back. news.mit.edu/2026/margare...

Dickinson famously wrote that hope is the thing with feathers. I suppose that makes hope a dinosaur that survived an extinction event. You can't kill hope. #WritingCommunity #Amquerying #Poetry

Random find in the unpublished data: A pretty little unnamed crater on Mars filled with sand ripples, about half a kilometer across, seen by Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in July.

Rereading #TheExpanse, I'm on Nemesis Games. Because I'm a geek, I look things up now and again. I wondered whether Lake Winnipesaukee existed. It does. Peaches, Amos, and Erich steal a ride to Luna on Rattlesnake Island. But, what's that to the left? 👀 Laconia?! #Sci-fi #BookSky

Serenity was released 21 years ago today. When a canceled series got the chance to have not only an epilogue, but one on the big screen... 🤯 Cool space chase. That was four months after the release of Revenge of the Sith and the Battle of Coruscant. We were really spoiled.

Just reread last night's pages from the new #sci-fi #horror novel. I'm 10k into Act 1, and I already have a strong sense of the characters. This is definitely an ecophagy narrative, popularized in the 80s and 90s by books like Engines of Creation, though I also draw on cybernetics... #AmWriting

Just finished rereading book four of #TheExpanse, Cibola Burn. I forgot that Orbit included this selection at the end. Hell yeah, you'd better look out for Ancillary Justice. #BookSky #Sci-fi

Lucille Ball is the Godmother of #StarTrek. As head of Desilu Studios, she overrode her own board of directors to finance the show & convinced network executives to greenlight a second pilot after the first one failed. That second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," first aired #OTD in 1966. 🖖

Started a new #sci-fi #horror novel last night, tentatively titled Skein, and the opening scene is wicked. For this WIP, I only outlined the first act. When finished, I'll see what the story taught me and plot Act Two accordingly. Does anyone else plot as you go? #WritingCommunity #WriteSky

Rereading #TheExpanse, I'm nearly finished with book three, Abaddon's Gate. Great character work, especially Melba/Clarissa. The passage below gave me pause. Hegel's known for the expression, "freedom is the recognition of necessity." #Sci-fi #BookSky

N.K. Jemisin is the first author to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 3 consecutive yrs for her Broken Earth series & first to win for all 3 novels in a trilogy. Recipient MacArthur Genius Grant, 2020. She was born #OTD in 1972. Happy Birthday @nkjemisin.bsky.social 🎈 #SciFi #Fantasy #BookSky

Every #sci-fi book I've read is careful, oh so careful, to qualify the relative positions of objects in microgravity, if only to preempt that one jerk who will inevitably grumble "there are no directions in space."
