It’s the 111th anniversary today of the birth of Harry Rée, who was a teacher and conscientious objector when the Second World War broke out, and by the time it ended, when he was 31, had invented ‘blackmail sabotage’ and got a DSO, an OBE, a Croix de Guerre, and a Medaille de la Resistance

On this topic, I can highly (and surprisingly!) recommend spending a little time in Milan's Chinatown... Also, I was given a pack of licorice spaghetti by a friendly Italian man in a deli/sweetshop.

I love how Chinese restaurants in Italy just call rice cakes “gnocchi” (and I mean, close enough!)

🧵My son called from the road. That’s not unusual; he travels for his work in an entertainment industry. We chatted for a minute before he told me he was wearing a hospital gown. My mind went to terrible places, but he sounded cheerful and was, right then, in good enough shape to drive. So I asked:

Keeping an eye on the rise of cheap Linux and android consoles.. obviously still very emulation focused, but build quality is getting competitive with ‘real’ consoles… this semi-serious suggestion could be a good way for the incumbents to stay competitive.

This fairly random throwaway point is, in fact, at the core of the 'debate'. In the West at least, Christianity is the *default* - even atheists are effectively non-Christians still living in a Christian context.

In my experience Christians think everything works the same way as Christianity.

Israel is, at least in theory, the one place where that's not true, where being Jewish is normal. Westerners in general do not understand, at a basic level, what that means. I don't say this as a criticism, just an opinion based on my life experience.

I also talk about the West and Westerners because firstly, I've lived in East Asia and this is mostly a very abstract argument there, and secondly I now live in the UK and it's very non-abstract here.

The point of Zionism is to create a context - be it a state or some non-state entity - where the default is Jewish. Jews are inherently, at some level, outsiders in all Western countries - we are different, abnormal, strange, outside the mainstream.

Well, that's one of my 2026 goals achieved - I just finished my 15th book of the year. Not a high figure for some people, I know, but it was a decent target for me. Next year I'll aim higher.

Eight Days in September 1066 - 6. Legacy The events of 1066 are often presented as the moment when England’s Scandinavian past came to an end. In Yorkshire, however, that is far too simple. The defeat of Harald Hardrada at Stamford Bridge ended the last great Scandinavian invasion, but

Latest figures for BN(O) visas - the numbers a dying down quickly, but the next phase is HKers applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (equivalent-ish to HKPR). If the government doesn't manage to make it near-impossible to qualify first...

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

"BN(O) out-of-country visas peaked in the YE March 2022, with 86,439 granted, soon after the scheme opened. Decreases each year since. There were 5,944 grants of BN(O) visas in the YE June 2026, bringing the total number of grants to 187,552 since 2021"

I was there... Joined my neighbours in a brief, friendly, entirely peaceful plea for international support for Hongkongers who just wanted the rights they had been promised.

Do we think new boy Andy was annoyed at the memes of him doing nothing and decided to make it clear to EVERYONE IN THE COUNTRY that he's taking things seriously?

I did know his story, but I hadn't heard the full story of the song, and this is lovely to read. Plus, it is still an absolute banger.

If you don't have proper eclipse glasses / filters, try a pinhole camera ... When the sun is whole, images will be circles. When partially eclipsed they will be crescents. You can use a colander or even a Ritz Biscuit. Find out more in my book "Up - a scientist's guide to the magic above us"

Grabbed a cheese and Marmite sandwich from M&S this evening - my (non-British) partner asked what it was, and when I told her she said "Oh, like Paddington?" I had to go into the kitchen and fetch a jar of Marmite and a jar of marmalade so I could show her the difference 😁

In 2026 Ukraine is having trouble shipping grain through the Black Sea because of war... In 340 BC "Athens [was] fearful [for] her vital supply of grain via the Black Sea (from the Danube basin, eastern Crimea and the Azov coasts)" from Istanbul: A Tale of 3 Cities. Sometimes, history does repeat.

[boldly] I just don't think the British government needs to have Shabana Mahmood in it, I think we managed fine without her and we can just keep going without her, it's fine, Andy Burnham doesn't need to find a space for her in cabinet, there are other MPs

I haven't seen enough people talking about The Dish today. It's a gentle, geeky, pro-science, very Australian comedy and absolutely worth you time if you haven't seen it!

The World Cup is basically just an exhibition tournament anyway, not a serious competition like the FA Cup...

Seems a weird response to the whole World Cup red card situation, but then Belgium is quietly a pretty weird place...
