Look, I know all the reasons we got here, but we really need to start seriously thinking about what we do in a world where The Markets punish whole countries for voting for decency, compassion, and fairness. We must stop pretending the capitalist machine is an objective, value neutral force.
A guy at the zine fest walked up and immediately started talking about using AI to edit his fanfiction. He wasn't being antagonistic. Was he just clueless? Did he want absolution? I was polite but said I didn't give a shit if it did certain things well in the overall context of what it does.
An interviewer once asked Charles Schulz if he had ever considered hiring assistants to write/draw Peanuts for him.
Schulz laughed and responded “I’d just as soon hire someone to play golf for me!”
Now that this is out in the open, I can say that a certain book I did for a certain publisher affiliated with one of these people had generative expand used on my cover art without my permission, and it wasn’t removed before publication
I’m drawing pictures… slowly
Also I will be at Zine Machine this Sunday, October 25th at the Durham Armory from 11AM to 5PM! With Inoscularum!! And my other comics!! And maybe more!! Wyahooooooooooo
Coming up in just a few short days is what could be my last big event of the year–Zine Machine! Running from 11-5 this Sunday at the Durham Armory, Zine Machine is a fav of mine (even though I've only been once, haha)! It's got a fun atmosphere and lots of great zinesters. Drop by if you can!
You see so much "no real artist would ever do this" in the "is this AI" subreddit that is clearly based in ignorance of the creative process. Yes, that image is AI-generated garbage, but saying it's AI because the drawing is "incorrect" somehow just lets me know that you don't understand art at all.
I'm glad there are people out there who are trying to figure whether images are gen AI or not (I'm one of those people), but I'm not glad that at how much the average person looking at a comic/illustration/drawing confuses quirks of the individual artist's hand with AI artifacting.
Monster Ma'amual is 28 pages plus covers, printed in color. It includes a selection of art from October drawing challenges from 2019, 2023, 2026.
Debuts tomorrow at Zine Machine in Durham, NC
We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.
Now that my brother has seen it in print, I will share the dedication in my new book.
My wish for everyone is that they have someone who's got their back as hard as my brother has mine.
My favorite horror of the century. A 20-film list thrown together in 15 or 20 minutes. I'm confident of the top three regardless of how little thought I've put into it. What did I miss?
I really just want to do my own comics with my own characters, so when someone asked me recently what preexisting comic I'd want to work on, I didn't really have an answer, but then I thought about it and said Lois Lane and Betty & Veronica would be fun.
The guy said, "Not Batman?"
Some of the drawings in books on their way (or soon to be on their way) to their new homes!

I do deeply believe that the notion of a "canon" is primarily useful for instructing children -- giving them a sense of history and what other people will have read/heard/seen -- and that if you're clinging to it into adulthood, you have failed to create a personal relationship with the art form.
I am almost exclusively doing small shows: zine fests and small indie comix expos. Other than my favorite show, NOICE, I've only applied for shows within an hour drive of my house in the last year. I may extend my range again at some point, but travel time and exhaustion are part of what I consider.
Excellent write up on cost/benefit for artists at increasingly-pricy shows.
One of the reasons that I, and so many others, so esteem HeroesCon, is that they curate and comp tables for a LOT of artists, including "new" artists. My first "real" table was at Heroes...

I don't fly to shows, not just because of the cost of the ticket, but because I can take more stuff to sell in a car.
In the end, making $300 at a show that costs you $50 to do is better than making $1200 at a show that costs you $1000 to do... and things don't ever scale that way for me.
As a note: My print runs are small enough that by the time I get to a show, all my material costs have been covered by patreon and kickstarter, so I just have to figure in the show costs to find a profit.
Why did I put John Carpenter's movies in a list in order of how much I like them? I don't know! Am I the only person who would place Prince of Darkness over The Thing? I don't know!
I only look at facebook for "memories" and today it told me that 14 years ago Eensy Weensy moved in! She was about half a year old. The first picture is that day, and the second is a few weeks ago. She's gotten a bit crotchety and slobbers a lot, but also much more elegant (kind of like me).
