Wildwood is one of those movies where the strengths and weaknesses of the studio are thrown in stark relief. Laika’s visual design and animation craft continue to shatter boundaries. Chris Butler is limited as a scriptwriter. Travis Knight’s ambition is inspiring and frustrating. He needs an editor.

Outside of the lustrous visuals and animation the script is weak and the characters stilted and shallow. The best is the villain, which is the closest the movie comes to delivering on the trailer’s promise of grappling with trauma, but there’s nothing fresh about obsession leading to tragedy.

I can’t help but think if I didn’t watch the trailer I’d have come out of the film much happier. I’d have remembered Laika’s many recent middling efforts like Boxtrolls and Missing Link and probably have been satisfied that this is better than those. Hindsight and all that.

But more than anything else, this movie is impacted by its trailer like nothing I’ve ever seen. That trailer - most of which is take from the movie’s haunting opening - teases treatments of theme and subject which never materialize in the film.

Is it a haunting story about a teen struggling with dark thoughts? Grappling with who they are, in gender or sexuality or … at all? Coping with the death of a family member or lover? The death of self? If it is, the movie doesn’t deliver on any of it. Sadly it’s just too surface for its own good.

Like he really, really needs an editor to tell him no. Just like with Kubo I feel like a solid 20 minutes could be shorn from the middle and this experience would only breathe better.

Two out of the three top stories on Belfast Telegraph right now. But anti-Agreement unionists are pushing stories that it was the ‘IRA’, not thousands & thousands of ordinary people that stopped the Orange Order marching down the Garvaghy Road. Meanwhile the loyalist paramilitary ceasefire..

Every now and then you’ll just see a number (or in this case a tax calculation process) that makes it clear how a country is run by backroom handshakes and sneers at the less-well-off’s.

(🚨) I can’t believe this hasn’t been major international news for weeks. Everything about this screams massive security breach—and worse still, the shape of this bizarre trip appears to mimic certain corrupt maneuvers Trump used during his 2016 preelection Russian collusion. Is new collusion coming?

sethabramson.substack.comBREAKING: Trump Hid From State Department That He Sent Man Behind His White House Military Complex to Meet with Kremlin Officials—and Now Major Details of That Trip Are ShiftingTrump says his six-story bunker under the White House—which critics fear is a prelude to martial law—is so classified that U.S. citizens who even discuss it commit Treason. So why is Putin involved?

Imagine going to work in the morning to sell fruit at your local market… Then a russian FPV drone starts chasing you. That happened today in Kherson. The 52-year-old vendor survived with blast injuries, a concussion, and shrapnel wounds. Just another civilian hunted by russia.

Musk was humiliated in his interview with The Economist editor Zanny Minton Beddoes. She called him out on his bullshit, pointed out his lies and ignorance and extreme prejudice. We need more interviews like that. This is the response of the world’s thinnest-skinned man.

This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days. ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.

Can Burnham say that war crimes, let alone genocide, has occurred in Gaza? Being clear on this is the most basic first step. Without this, Labour hasn't even started its journey to rectifying for years of complicity and participation in this genocide.

I'll summarize this: Mamdani asked NYers to keep air conditioning at 78 degrees. A wave criticism hit online. A MSNBC broadcast pointed out the US Department of Energy recommends that 78 degree figure. Immediately after, the US Department of Energy deleted 6,000 web pages related to energy saving.

By 12 June, PSNI were covering up paramilitary involvement in the pogroms. 'When violence breaks out, paramilitaries are often involved, but the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said this time there was "no evidence" the disorder was coordinated by loyalist paramilitaries.' [11/n]

Hours before the June 9 2026 pogrom the Justice Minister dodged a question about paramilitary involvedment on BBC Radio Ulster. Intel had already landed of a paramilitary pogrom. Anywhere else in the world - the minister would resign in the wake of what went unacted upon year after year. [10/n]

There are two East Belfast UDA paramilitary flags on lamp posts either side of the entrace to Garnerville Rd in East Belfast. Garnerville is where the PSNI training college is. The paramilitaries are showing everyone who is in charge. Policing is severerly compromised. How did we get to this? [1/n]

There's a Genocide happening in Gaza. Our Government is arresting pensioners for holding cardboard signs that say "I support Palestine Action." And Andy Burnham - labours apparent last hope - won't even acknowledge what's really happening.
