I'm very happy that this paper has just been published in History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences! It's an improved version, thanks to the feedback of the anonymous reviewers! Available in open access here: doi.org/10.1007/s406...

doi.orgLooking for keys in model organisms: interpreting and keying-up in basal cognition - History and Philosophy of the Life SciencesIn this article, I analyse what epistemic operations are involved in extending model organisms to a novel research field. To this end, I draw on the DEKI account of scientific representation, and augm...

What role heuristics play in model organism research? How can the DEKI capture the development of MOs? Is basal cognition introducing novel MOs for neuroscience? This is what I try to explore in the new preprint: philsci-archive.pitt.edu/27054/

And contrary to what you might expect, the concept of communication is *the same* across scales. It picks out a mechanism schema - a particular causal organization that guides how researchers experiment and explain. 3/3

I use a large corpus of articles across biology and cognitive science to build an account of biological communication that covers every scale the concept gets invoked at - from bacteria to humans. 2/

We are super happy to announce the third Workshop of Ideas in Neuroscience! We will once again look critically at assumptions of modern neuroscience: what does it mean that the brain encodes information? Is this a useful approach, or a metaphor that blurs our vision?

Last year we met in the beautiful Dolomites to talk about “naturalistic” behaviour - now the brilliant organizers have put together a preprint which summarizes those discussions. Very much recommended! It definitely changed how I think about behaviour

We are super happy to present our first preprint - the effect of our Rethinking Naturalistic Behaviour Workshop - where we look more critically at the term "naturalistic behaviour" and point to its vagueness and inconsistency in its use! osf.io/preprints/os...

The open access version of A Drive to Survive is now available to download for free! direct.mit.edu/books/oa-mon... (If you've already read the preprint, I'd really appreciate a download of the official version... for the *metrics*) - also it has way less typos.

Exciting mail day! I received two new books with my contributions. In the volume on Conceptual Engineering, edited by Piotr Stalmaszczyk, I co-authored a chapter with my PhD student @wikror.bsky.social on predictive understanding, using empirical evidence from scientific writing and peer review. 1/2

We argue that when discussing “understanding” in phil sci and epistemology philosophers have overlooked its predictive aspect - one that practitioners of science refer to systematically. Text mining allows the discovery of concepts and enables a broad look on how they’re used.

We introduce methodological basics of digital philosophy and show how they tie (in our view seamlessly!) with broader practices of conceptual engineers, and then provide a proof-of-principle.

We are super happy to announce our first Workshop of Ideas in Neuroscience! During this event, inspired by the spirit of our School of Ideas, we will discuss naturalistic behaviors: what do we fail to see when we head-fix our mouse? And when it's fine?

You are up to date.
