File previews are out on mobile! Ever wanted to simply look at a text file on mobile, but instead the app made you download it and open it separately? No longer! If a file is plain text, Discord now shows a button (actor portrayal: โ†™๏ธโ†—๏ธ) that opens a modal with the file contents.

I've had a super pleasant experience working with the pre-releases for Start. I'm super excited to see how polished the 1.0 release is!

Shipped a new feature to stable today Move To... Are you tired of joining a new emoji server and having to drag it alllll the way to the bottom of your server sidebar to get it into the never-to-be-seen-again "emojis" folder? Well. It's finally here.

Today I shipped a huge change to syntax highlighting in Discord: code blocks and file previews on web are now being highlighted by Tree-sitter, instead of highlight.js.

Shout-out to the tree-sitter contributors and the hundreds of independent grammar authors for creating such a strong ecosystem, and shout-out @fasterthanli.me for building Arborium (the basis for our new syntax highlighter).

highlight.js is fairly resilient to ReDoS, but even so we'd occasionally have to field some security reports about it. Tree-sitter is not immune to DoS either, but we can tune it to protect against DoS in ways that aren't possible with RegEx.

More importantly, however, tree-sitter is semantically aware, meaning that it can highlight code in context rather than based on keywords and pattern matching. This means that your code blocks in Discord are now as accurate as the best code editors. For example, None is not a keyword anymore.

Why, you might ask? highlight.js is a genuinely great project, but it suffers from one great weakness: regular expressions. This comes with 2 main downsides: RegEx is often vulnerable to denial-of-service, and it has no semantic understanding of the code.

bit of an update, it's been a few months now since I parted ways with Deno, and I'm starting to actively look for jobs again! I'm pretty good with big systems, compilers, and embedded. especially if rust or elixir are involved :)

I'm back on the job hunt! If anybody's looking for a remote (Seattle) senior software engineer with a decade of experience in media processing, networking, security, and low-level native development, hit me up.

hey folks! still looking for work and in my experience I'm only able to get anywhere with direct referrals, so if you know of any Senior-or-above engineering roles w/ focus on fullstack or frontend web, DM me! CV available on request. most recent work was staff at Discord and co-founder of cohost.

This library has made me want to animate things I have no business animating, just for the sake of animating them.

meowdy! figured i'd create a professional account in advance of GDC so i had a space to put my thoughts on the state of the industry and follow folks that make things i care about. if you've got questions about getting your game integrated with discord, feel free to reach out, i'm happy to answer!

I guess we shouldn't be surprised that the US has extended its policy of kidnapping people and charging them with fake crimes. The hypocrisy, while typically blatant and unabashed, is in this case just depressing.

To be clear, this is not a defense of Maduro. The process of law has failed us, and it becomes more obvious by the day.

Hey that looks just like a pot I have in my house

MB Pottery@mb-pottery.com

One of the last items I made before closing my studio. It's the biggest thing I made, it covered the whole 12in bat and I had to fire it directly on the bottom bricks in my kiln. I was pretty lucky that it fit in, as I didn't measure the kiln beforehand and I forgot the thermocouple sticks out ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

These are the screen grabs of probably the last newsletter email I've sent for a long while. I'm moving across the ocean and I have no idea if and when I'll be able to re-establish a pottery studio. mb-pottery.com #pottery #handmade #sale #lastchance

Absolutely tragic end to the season for the Mariners, but also one of the most fun seasons to watch since I was a kid. We went down fighting and had some absolutely epic games and moments along the way. ๐Ÿ”ฑ

I'm not sure what's going on with Spotify lately but I've seen a few people talk about switching. This seems like a great time to plug my RPC app again: I also didn't switch for a long time because of their integration with Discord, but I got fed up enough and haven't looked back.

My Discord music presence app is finally working! I've been looking forward to this ever since I switched off of Spotify and my music presence broke :( github.com/appellation/...

It's finally here. Zed is available on Windows. Built from scratch, and rendering at 1 million pixels/millisecond. Download it today ๐Ÿ‘‡

I appreciate the Blue Jays for knocking out the hated Yankees but I think the clear optimal postseason outcome at this point is a Mariners v Brewers World Series, in which the teams would combine for zero championships a team being guaranteed their first title would be pretty fucking cool

I've been working on modal components all summer, and I'm really excited to release the first piece of this: string select and label components in modals! You can finally put select menus in your bot's modals, and give more information with field descriptions!

This isn't the first or only app that does this, but I've been looking for an excuse to build something with Tauri and this seemed like a fun project. It was unexpectedly complicated, but sometimes that's where the fun is.

yesterday we increased the pin limit from 50 to 250, everywhere! this has been in the works for a long time and I'm glad that it's finally shipped - no more need to carefully decide which memes to unpin in the group chat!
