ive talked on how i wont engage with writers who use ai, i wont eat at a restaurant with an ai menu, i wont have anything to do with it. but what this post illustrates is regardless of how OTHERS react, ultimately the worst part about using ai is that you are punishing YOURSELF and dont even know it

cool, cool

More than a month now since I've been able to sit with my right foot tucked under me. Shin-hole is SO much improved but that's still just too much pressure on that spot. It is kind of wild how badly I want to sit with my right foot tucked under me at this point!!

Just noticed that today is exactly one month after my fall! I can walk basically normally again, but the hole in my shin still isn’t fully closed, which is such a weird thing to think about. Just the faintest ghost of the left hip bruise, and scrapes seem to have left at least semi-permanent marks.

I was messing around on my iPad and decided I should document the various injuries I incurred when I had my fall almost 3 weeks ago.

AOC: "As AI begins to encroach in our society, their goal is to take your cognition away from you. AI's goal is to take your thoughts away from you, your ability to think away from you, so that you become dependent on a machine ... reading books is active resistance"

I have a headache today, one of those headaches that sits right above my right eye. And I keep having this funny thought, which is that I’m kind of grateful for headaches like this one, where I’m still totally functional, just with fairly intense pain above my right eye.

I’d rather have no headache, of course! I’m grateful because it’s a counter to my inner narrative that I’m just a wimp who can’t handle pain. When I get the other kind of headache, where light hurts, sound hurts and I can’t do anything besides moan in the dark, I always wonder: what I’m just a wimp?

THIS. I mean, I'm so interested in thinking that I got a whole-ass PhD in cognitive science...so I both know how much we love to minimize cognitive effort and can't really relate to that, personally. I love thinking!! It is my favorite thing to do!!

the big thing the rise of LLMs has revealed to me is that there is a not insignificant chunk of the population that considers cognition itself to be a frustrating and unnecessary burden

It is genuinely interesting to me how these 100+ responses do (and sometimes very much don't) align with the kinds of things we've been saying for years about writing. I should ask my brother what he thinks (though he's Math Ed, not pure Math). proofsandprompts.com/2026/10/08/1...

The acid test for me is a simple one: Has my professional and/or creative life benefited in any material way from "AI," and very specifically generative "AI"? No, it hasn't. Has it been negatively impacted by the same? Yup, in a whole bunch of ways. My professional life is worse now for it.

Something I've learned these last 3 weeks is that I do a surprising number of things "shin-first", and specifically, right-shin first: getting into bed, and getting into chairs in particular (I apparently like to sit with one leg folded under me). I've been re-training myself to go "butt-first"...

Recently FB has been absolutely loading up my feed with a bunch of (right-wing, conspiracy-theory/anti-vaxx) randos, accounts I do not and never would follow, and I can click “X” all day long to say I don’t want to see it and it just fills right back up with the same bullshit, different randos.

And I know, the answer is “get off FB”…and I did already abandon Threads over this nonsense, but FB is harder, because for better or worse, that’s where my longest-term relationships exist online, and I don’t want to lose those connections (though I already am, w/FB burying them in randos).

Feeling so sad about missing the best part of the year for going on walks outside…I just can’t do any appreciable distance right now without putting too much strain on my shin. And by the time it’s better, I’m guessing it’ll be shifting into wintery weather :(

There's a guy in my replies who says he doens't read women because they write well about emotional conflicts and unrequited love and that's not what he wants. He reads sci fi he says. Can you imagine reading sci-fi and not reading Octavia Butler? Or Ursula K Le Guin? Or NK Jemisin?

At this point, everything except the very deep gouge on my right lower shin (I’m realizing I got the directions exactly backwards in the drawing, whoops!) is doing much much better, even the deep bruise on my left hip that was literally BLACK for a week.

You know what really hurts when you have a hole in your lower right shin? Driving. Those muscles/tendons (I study language, not anatomy!) are flexed the whole dang time between the gas pedal and the brake. (Shin hole seems to be doing better after the megadoses of antibiotics. Still hurts though.)

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

Took my last dose of the antibiotics for my shin-hole (sorry, it's gross but it kinda makes me giggle to say it that way...and I'm the one with the hole in my shin, so I get to seek delight however I want!) at lunchtime today. Here's hoping I can kick the nausea and rebuild my guts quickly.

And hopefully the shin-hole keeps healing. It's noticeably better today (after being mind-bendingly itchy all night; I did not get very much sleep), though that's probably partly because it's my work-from-home day and I've been working with my foot propped up most of the day.

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

Just now finished the lunch I started at 11:30am but couldn't finish before needing to drag myself across campus to teach my 12:30pm class and then back across campus the other way to teach my 2pm class. Busy teaching day on a still-injured leg and high doses of antibiotics was ROUGH.

I thought that maybe, maybe, my bruised knees had improved enough that leg-crossing would be possible, but I just tried it and nope, still too tender for that. All I want is to be able to fold myself up into weird little pretzels. Haven't been able to do that for two weeks and I'm losing my mind!

It just occurred to me that in this instance, Muse kinda *was* my muse, in that I doubt it would ever have occurred to me to recreate that photo in crayon if not for that ridiculous ad it shoved into my feed. Not sure how I feel about that!

I am nothing if not stubborn, and so I decided to make good on my claim that I'd dig out old crayons and draw it myself. Is it a masterpiece? I mean, I hadn't drawn in decades and it shows, and old broken crayons are a challenging medium, but driven by spite and curiosity, I made it my damned self.

Oh, FB, I promise you that if I felt a pressing need to have a “crayon masterpiece” of this 14 year old photo of my and my daughter, I would dig out her old crayons and draw the thing my damned self. I made those sweaters with my own hands, I have no aversion to making things myself!
