Gall of the week is from Ontario. Unusually it is caused by a chalcid wasp, Hemadis nubillipennis, on blueberries, Vaccinium spp.

NCBI seems to be really understaffed at the moment, I've been waiting over almost two months for them to manually fix a submission that I cannot do on my end...

I've complained on here a few times about synteny plots that are harder to read than they need to be. I decided it was time to actaully do something about it: introducing SynTangle, a tool for untangling whole-genome synteny plots github.com/Hanliconius/... 1/
I hate to do this with real data, but this is a persistent data vis issue in chromosome synteny riparian plots that we Need to get better at. Left, a synteny plot published today. Right, a rearranged version with exactly the same gross arrangement but with reordered chromosomes:
Your regular reminder to not publish or review for MDPI, what is this hot garbage of a figure. Drosophila and Nasonia are mixed up, and the photo of B. kinseyi is MY PHOTO of Eupelmus parasitoid that I reared out of B. kinseyi gall, instead of the inducer. Thanks for lifting and not crediting me?
I’m really happy to share that my invited review on social insect genome evolution, co-authored with @corriemoreau.bsky.social, is out now in @genomebiolevol.bsky.social 🐝🐜
This is the paper I wish I’d had when studying for quals in grad school, and was a ton of fun to write.
The preprint is up for our work with Sichuan University led by Xiaoxiao Chen on the host-associated divergence in the seed-feeding wasp Megastigmus daduheensis and its conifer host Cupressus chengiana across three river valleys on the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. 🧪
Despite strong phylogeographic congruence between wasp and host lineages, calibrated demographic analyses indicate that wasp divergence occurred during the early Holocene, substantially later than the Pliocene-Pleistocene divergence of host lineages.
This temporal mismatch rules out strict codivergence and supports rapid host tracking. Olfactory host recognition likely reinforces differentiation, showing concordant divergence can emerge over compressed timescales via rapid local adaptation. 🌲🐝
Our paper on the rather large genome (1.08Gb) of the agricultural pest blueberry gall wasp is now out as a preprint. We also looked across chalcidoid genomes and found the genome size variation is largely driven by transposable element proliferation. 🧪 #Ormyridae#Hemadasnubilipennis
The chromosome level genome of the Blueberry Stem Gall Wasp, Hemadas nubilipennis (Hymenoptera: Ormyridae) on lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) reveals repeat-driven expansion https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.64898/2026.09.21.753281v1
We described a new species #Eurytomidae in the ##Aximopsis s.l. from Hainan 🇨🇳 named it qiong (琼) which is the one-character shorthand for the province. This is the second confirmed record of parasitism on #Ceratina 🐝, and first record of the genus in 🇨🇳. 🧪
🐝 A global group of parasitoid wasps belonging to the genus Aximopsis has been under renewed scientific scrutiny, with molecular studies revealing that the current taxonomic classification does not accurately reflect the wasps' evolutionary relationships: doi.org/10.3897/BDJ.14.e206796
...and yes Aximopsis is a mess, as are most eurytomid genera so we are slowly working resolving that. At least the nodularis group in which this species belongs to is monophyletic!
Um. The William Penn foundation offered bridge funding to keep the academy of natural sciences open for a year, and the people in charge said “no one is helping things by offering Band-Aids”. Jesus Christ.

📢 NEW GENOME ALERT
Erythrina gall wasp, Quadrastichus erythrinae, is an invasive pest on the Hawaiian wiliwili tree. @ymilesz.bsky.social et al. generated its genome assembly from a low amount of input DNA, with a sequencing cost of only ~$100.

Very important new paper out! The coffee berry borer beetle is the worst pest of ☕️ worldwide, and in Mexico is attacked by the wasp Cephalonomia hyalinipennis. That wasp is supposed to be in Hawaii, so why doesn’t it attack CBB here? Turns out neither are actually C. hyalinipennis!
