It is great to hear and see the peaceful protests in France and all around the US ❤️ The world today is wrong in so many ways, especially for young people, women, people of color, artists, immigrants, knowledge workers and basically anyone who is not a billionaire. There is a lot to protest.

Brava! I love this. Especially when she relates it to the conversations she is having in public spaces.

1. CRISPR came from basic research on bacteria. 2. Optogenetics started with a discovery in algae. 3. The GFP protein comes from jellyfish. The biggest breakthroughs all trace to scientists following their curiosity, and this is one huge reason why we must keep funding basic research!

Great video explainer of the evolution of multicellularity. I look forward to reading the review! I think there are some important bits that haven’t been considered yet, and yes I need to write about them.

Out today in @nature.com: our review on how single cells evolve into multicellular organisms. With Ozan Bozdag, @kaitong25.bsky.social, Peter Yunker, and @matthewherron.bsky.social. rdcu.be/9ZuiKow9twKa For an overview, check out the video below.

A process like this has occurred in biology many many times, both social biology and symbioses. Noise becomes cues which can eventually become signals. Once signals, they can be decoupled from the source cause and become dishonest signals and be used to manipulate receivers.

Ten years ago Tami, Roy, and I released a movie we made of antibiotic resistance evolving in real time. I thought maybe a couple thousand people tops would see it. I couldn't have imagined it would be seen millions of times, and be taught from middle school through the graduate level worldwide

There are a couple more days to apply for this postdoc role in the @socialfluids.bsky.social lab: we are looking for a computational biologist interested in how socially transferred proteins evolve. Is this you? Apply! Make sure to address all the criteria in your application!

At the end of the term I asked my college creative wriing students to submit anonymous thoughts on AI. No real surprises: Mood ranges from resignation to despair, capitulation from embittered erosion of standards to total, feelings of betrayal from deep to furious. 1/

On Friday I went and spoke to a class of 7 year olds about ants and flying ant day and this weekend, as if on cue, the Lasius flew en masse at the school’s summer fete. I had an army of motivated kids joyously helping me collect queens ❤️
