Dear Americans: GIven that now the “opp research” on Graham Platner includes what he talked about on deployment, you may want to dig deeper on how troops talk in war. Don’t. You’d never understand unless you served. And I would not want it to be ANY different.

My son was a Marine in the Iraq War so I can only imagine. Same with any type of high stress situation, dark humor is how you get through it. Worked with a hospital crew and was told some (dark) jokes from a coroner & EMT’s. It’s not meant to be heard by most people.

Except some of this was on Reddit, apparently. I'm still new to the controversy and don't disqualify people based on offensive comments, but if he's on social media saying it's a woman's fault she was raped in the military, that isn't exactly a private statement meant to help his comrades get by.

Nope. There is no moral dilemma or military exemption. Just ask any woman who has been subjected to this. I call bullshit on you for this and it’s brought you down a notch in my opinion. You’re reaching and excusing. #Mansplain #Manspread #JustSayNo

If he's on the Internet making comments that minimize sexual assault in the military, that's nothing to do with trash-talking the enemy during war. It's up to men to police other men to stop the rape and his saying that women need to take responsibility for themselves is exactly the opposite.

Per Margaret Forsyth, there are reasons to be suspicious of or uncomfortable with Platner -- but we also need to be suspicious of the swirl of disinformation that surrounds his campaign: that means tracing the primary sources independently, not being convinced by Millions of$$s worth of oppo.

Interesting. It was reported he said of military rapes that women should take responsibility for themselves. I believe that's the comment people are finding offensive, especially considering there's been an ongoing and tragic sexual assault problem in the military for a while. Even including 2013.

Yes, it was in response to the rape proof underwear thing. You know that he got to know women SA survivor vets later, listened to what they said & they straightened him out so he understood why it was not cool, right? So he listened, internalized, & changed. 1.x

He excuses male toxicity as a right for having served and we wouldn’t understand. We deal with that attitude everyday. They bring it home with them & gather in Reddit groups to continue that vibe. He never false to fail.

No one's saying he hasn't changed. What we're saying is start him local and vet him. Watch him. FFS, have we learned nothing from Sinema, Manchin and Fetterman? And for the record? I managed to get through 21 years of service without getting any questionable tattoos or disparaging remarks online. 🙄

Sorry, that's a total copout. Any human should have the opportunity to consider what any other human goes through in extreme circumstances. It's why we have literature. Erich Maria Remarque might as well not have written All Quiet on the Western Front. "Readers will never understand."

Recently I was telling a friend war stories that included death, gore and body parts strewn around. He asked me how it made me feel to see that. I wasn't able to answer, it was like the question didn't make sense. Later it donned on me. Feeling isn't part of the training. Not feeling is.

Dear Adam: Based on your posts yesterday & today, one can only assume you were working with Vote Vets on their endorsement and thought you'd do your part This is what you are standing up for⤵️ Nobody will forget who stood up for Naԑis, that stain will never come out nypost.com/2026/05/20/u...

nypost.comGraham Platner cruelly mocked a US soldier who nearly died protecting squad: ‘Stupid motherf—er didn’t deserve to live’Seven years ago, Democratic Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner cruelly mocked an American soldier who was caught on camera taking fire from the Taliban in Afghanistan.

I work with Veterans (Canada) both as colleagues and assisting them with benefits/rehabilitation services. Combat changes the way you see the world, especially if you are from a rural community. Platner is like a lot of young men I have seen over the years who have seen the devil and come home.

Hell, I know how we talked when we were "in the rear with the gear". On bivouac. At the weapons range. At JRTC. On the way to the DZ for our minimum once every three month practice jump. I can only imagine how we would have talked if we ever actually deployed.

Hi Adam, I get that. And I get shitposting. But he needs to address the Ted Daniels comments, or it's going to bite him in the ass. Maybe not destroy him. But there are going to be many moderates and independents who won't vote for him specifically because of that. The other stuff I can let slide.

Dear exiled and estranged politicians: I wouldn’t vote for anyone who tells me to ignore my eyes and ears and that it’s just that I wouldn’t understand.

It might shock some people, but as a female who served in the military and as a police officer, I said a lot of things polite society would find offensive. Gallos humor and off-color jokes were very common. I've read some of Plantar's past posts and they really don't bother me. I'd vote for him.

I don't really care what he said in extreme circumstances. What I don't get is how he can possibly be the best choice my party can come up with as a candidate for Senate (but Maine Democrats are stuck with him at this point). Seriously, you couldn't find a "progressive" without a Nazi tattoo?

If I "forgive" him his faults, both the tattoo and his questionable social media history, what's the part I am supposed to like? He's not Susan Collins. Yes, I like that part. The rest puts him roughly on par with the execrable John Fetterman. Fool me once, etc, etc. Just glad I don't live in Maine

The fear of innocent children hearing that talk would be right. But bc of republican's politics, hollywood, a racist pedophilia president, etc, children are already subjected to it all. So what fing difference does it really make what is, or he said?

I served during peace time. I don't want anyone holding anything against me for what I talked about during those 4 years. There's camaraderie, mental prep for the possibility of violence, you're still only in your 20s and dumb af, the exposure you have to veterans with wartime experience. And more.

After thinking about a response, the best thing I can say is that I'm glad for you. And I mean it. A lot of acts are indefensible yet understandable within the broader context.

I aways saw being in the military to be like living in another country. The culture and the behaviors of people are totally different compared to the civilian world.

Unit cohesion depends on personel knowing the culture and how things operate, which helps with readiness and performance. It's getting in the weeds now...

No it doesn’t. I was in Iraq from 2008-2011. Sure, it wasn’t OIF 1, but I did to convoy security. So I got outside the “wire” a lot. We got our intel from CNN and if it wasn’t a convoy, PSD, or trainers, no one interacted with the locals. Maybe civil affairs at a high level, but not the real people

Veteran here. What do you expect of guys in their late teens and early 20’s? We can train soldiers and sailors to be very good at their jobs. But they’re still kids in a lot of ways. And if you think young, male sailors are bad, just take a look at college kids.

You bet. As an aside. One of my prior ship captains took a frigate down to Puerto Vallarta for a port visit during Spring Break. He told me the sailors were appalled by the behavior of the college kids. Having done shore patrol in Subic Bay, that is pretty damn low.

The key difference here is "college". Buddy enlisted, then went to college. Anyways, most Americans didn't know half the Nazi dog-whistles out there (which is the point of Dog-Whistles btw) until you saw them on every Ukranian in publicity posts from the war, starting with Azov.

The guy was a drunk 23 year old getting tatts with army buddies… Stupid shit happens. I got a tatt one drunk night after skydiving for the first time. I was so happy I lived I inked a Dancing Bear with a parachute on my hip. At the time I thought my forehead would be appropriate. Drunk kids.

Nonsense. I'm a retired Army and DoD officer and I dont recall getting a Nazi tattoo or anything close to Plattners actions or comments. Plattner is a pig, and the fact that he's running against Collins/Trump is no excuse. No pig - Trump or otherwise - should be in office. Shame on you.

Yea I seriously doubt Nazi tatoos are a thing to do by default, especially for someone who was literally protesting the war a couple weeks earlier. It seems that platner’s weltanschaanung has experienced quite a bit of drifting , with only one constant - who to blame when his shit doesn’t work out …

Croatian Ustashi particularly liked the Totenkopf tattoo because of its connection to mass murder of Muslim prisoners in France. Azov Battalion, unclear, but anti-Ruzzian insignia of any type could be attractive. Wagner Group? Aside from Russians being fascist sympathizers, hard to tell.

I look back on the things I said as a teenager about my teen idols in teen magazines that kept up into adulthood. I realize now, as a woman of a certain age, how wrong it was, and I do regret no one told me why. So, Adam, no. It starts with us.

War tests your soul. If you are a fucking racist dirtbag, that will come out. If you are a coward, that will come out. I don’t understand why you protect “locker talk”, everything you say you should be held responsible for. Including all the curses you scream when you are engaged by the enemy

It’s not all roses and butterflies that lies inside of a soul. You learn how much you want to live, and what you can do to keep alive :-) as well. Among, many, many, other truths. And truth can be both good and bad.

The research seemed to suggest that by 70 days on the frontline in a high-intensity conflict, soldiers weren't learning many truths about themselves, except that we can't survive that environment that long.

Why has society (since caveman days) never asked the question: what are we doing wrong that we even need to have the phrase (excuse) "Boys will be boys"! It is baked in every aspect of life. Look around at the world today. Kudos to parents who taught differently and to men who grew up. lMO

You mean a bunch of traumatized people in a war zone arnt having well considered discourse while being sensitive to the feelings of people years into the future? Color me surprised.

No. Those traumatized (who also traumatized others) gather decades later in Reddit groups to continue that male toxicity and call it their “right”. Those attitudes continue & we are traumatized by their actions. Grow TFU & heal yourselves. Or don’t.

In good faith - really - I don't believe it as boys will be boys. I've spent a lot of time around vets from different political backgrounds and the military impacts all of them differently. And asking someone to have a tidy journey out of that worldview asks too much.

The purity police in the Democratic Party is trying to claim another victim. I guess because we have proven that we can’t figure out how to beat a convicted fraudster and adjudicated rapist we set our sights on our own because MAGA can’t and won’t stop us from beating ourselves.

Given he freely uses ableist & homophobic slurs, said it's a woman's fault if they get raped, said rural Maine voters were dumb, complained black people don't tip and got a Nazi tattoo, it says more about you than you think it does, Adam, that you would not want that culture to be any different.

The opp research is blasting things he actually wrote. You are showing your ass by continuing to support the liar who not only sported a Nazi SS tattoo for 20 years and counting, but also has a DUI and minimizes the criminal desecration of Iraqi corpses.

When it comes to deployment talk, I agree 100 percent. Of course, that doesn't explain things like the Nazi tattoo, Platner's recent palling around with antisemites, and his apparent embrace of election conspiracies.

Meh. Bibi’s minions have been accusing Bernie Sanders of being an anti Semite because he criticizes Israel. To be sure, the ‘optics’ are bad when Platner criticizes Israel’s —entirely humane — devastation of Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. 1/

Young people in high-stress situations are far more prone than most to make mistakes in judgment. Responsible adults - especially those seeking leadership positions - acknowledge those mistakes (not hide them) and make sincere efforts to apologize for them and display better judgment going forward.

@capitolhunters had the research months ago; it’s not new. That said, if such language is normal, why did Platner delete all his Reddit posts? “Americans” aren’t voting; Mainers are. GP is unqualified and should not be anywhere near a Senate seat. Stay out of our elections.
