Every WiFi router should have a setting that is “I have a stupid new ‘smart’ home device, so please turn off 5G for the next 10 minutes so I can set that up with 2.4ghz, and then put the network back to normal afterward”.

Our router can set up a dedicated 2.4ghz IoT on a separate channel. I didn't use it for a long time and was constantly having to reset our smart bulbs because they stopped working. A few weeks ago, I decided to see if the IoT network would help and I haven't had to touch anything since.

Ugh, selling 2.4 GHz devices should be a crime. For those who don't know, 2.4 GHz WiFi shares the space with Bluetooth. You can have a maximum of three devices per area. The 5 GHz band supports 23 devices per area. 2.4 GHz devices will have issues with connection drops in most areas.

Now, to be fair, 5ghz is really bad at penetrating walls and stuff due its higher wavelength. 2.4ghz is better for range, so it’s like it’s *useless*

Yeah, the irony being that the greater range means the three non overlapping channels have a greater chance of interference. Why can’t we have nice things?!!

Oh god, I work in tech support for a small ISP and boy do I sympathize with this. I would add, every router should have a feature where, after setting up all the info to get connected to the internet, it saves it as the default setting. So when some dumbass presses the Reset button, it doesn't /1
