Literally none of the headlines about the woman burned alive on the subway include the fact that at least one NYPD officer looked on and did nothing. So a reminder: - Cops feel zero obligation to protect you - Press can't be trusted to hold cops accountable, they're effectively the police PR wing

All police officers “feel zero obligation to protect you?” Aside from how you could possibly know that, please consider what you’d say to the family of Greensboro, NC officer Michael Horan, killed in the line of duty today after reporting to a call about a man with a gun in a supermarket.

wfmynews2.comGPD: Officer killed in shooting at Food Lion on Lawndale Dr., suspect in custodyPolice are still investigating the circumstances of what led up to the shooting.

Dude, that's not the conversation here. Have you heard of Castle Rock v Gonzalez? SCOTUS has fucking ruled that cops have no obligation to protect you. I've personally had cops refuse to honor my restraining order. So excuse the fuck out of me for having some knowledge-based experience.

I remember the video of a different suicidal person who set himself on fire. Police response was to point the gun at the flailing corpse and shout orders at it . I argue that this hostile response was far worse than ignoring the burning target because it is a insult to injury. PUT OUT THE FIRE!

Dudes not even shouting “stop drop & roll.” Not being facetious there. That shit was drilled into me as a kid. I remember being taught to tackle someone at the knees to get them on the ground and roll them if they wouldn’t SD&R themselves

What is the expectation of "help" here? The victim was fully engulfed & (in reality) dead when the police arrived. Police aren't superhuman and have no super powers. That officer probably understood the victim was already dead, and was obviously looking for a fire extinguisher. Bad take here.

Learning that was one of many times I audibly said “are you fucking kidding me” during law school. Maybe cops should change the slogan from “Protect and Serve” if they’ll let you burn to death.

It’s fun how a series of Rehnquist decisions resulted in a world where the cops have no duties to any civilian, but do have a functionally absolute dictatorship over any civilians that cross their parh

Who arrested the guy who lit her on fire? You? What bystanders helped her? None. I assume you either did not vote or voted for Trump. Surely you did not vote for that longstanding law enforcement official Kamala Harris—formerly the lead L. E. Official for the state of California.

it's very difficult trying to understand what's going on in the uncensored videos i've seen. it's said she was asleep, but the video shows someone standing while engulfed in flames? i see a cop walk by, but articles say cops used a fire extinguisher on her. i'm just unclear on what's reality here

Honestly, I bet the cop was headed to get the fire extinguisher. Cops are maliciously stupid but that person is probably already burned beyond recovery. Them standing really has no bearing on the situation. I've seen far worse in the middle east. At that point, if they're not dead, they want to be.

i've seen video of someone self-immolating sitting mostly still. what i don't understand is why the person looks like they're standing still, hanging onto one of the vertical bars, and not trying to escape the train and flames, instinctively or just through the damage dropping. i guess...

Ever since the SCOTUS conservatives decided that the police aren't obligated to do their jobs ("serve and protect") if they don't want to, law enforcement has turned into even more of an extortion racket.

The thing that kills me is on the one hand, cops don't want to have to do their job. On the other hand, if you try to employ anyone else to do the things they won't or can't do, they throw a fit. They want every city to hand over all their money & let cops spend it or pocket it. No questions asked

That sums it up pretty well. The don't want to deal with people in mental health crises (except to abuse or murder them). But having mental health professionals take care of them is a non starter.

Yep. That was going to be my next example. Or DV, or SA, even traffic management. They suck at it and won't let anyone claw it away. Meanwhile... TRUMP: Arrest all them Mexicans! CITY: We don't pay you to be doing that POLICE: Stop defunding us!

The fact that the left knows cops can be this bad, and knows that Trump & Co are going to push the US towards fascism with force, makes me even more perplexed that Dems make excessive gun control for people who follow every law a part of their platform and a hill they’ll die on.

The upshot was that their duty is to investigate crimes that have happened. I think of this every time there's an appeal for increased funding and paramilitary gear for police. Maybe we should have detectives and community officers that walk beats and don't carry lethal weapons.

Take it one step further Ari: If a cop intervenes, they make the city liable for a civil suit. If the cop does not intervene, the city is blocked from being sued for failing to intervene per SCOTUS. SCOTUS (and tort lawyers) has incentivized cops and cities to NOT intervene.

I tried, I failed, I suck at Google :-( I'm looking for a bystander video showing a cop present & doing nothing. I need it for the purpose of having meaningful conversations that don't degenerate into everybody screaming he said/she said. it's hard to argue with a news video again, help please.

I'd like to see a link, too, because that's not what the AP says: "On Sunday, officers were at the station but were patrolling a different subway platform. They responded after seeing and smelling smoke coming from the fire." apnews.com/article/new-...

apnews.comWhat to know about the death of a woman who was set on fire in a New York City subway trainNew York City police have arrested a man on murder and arson charges in the death of a woman who was set on fire inside a subway train Sunday.

Per the NYT, both accounts are true: officers stationed a little bit away eventually responded appropriately, while the cop who was RIGHT THERE never lifted a finger.

Some people in the replies asked for the video. Here it is. You can see the cop do absolutely fuck all. bsky.app/profile/tali...

Video from a bystander who came across the woman fully engulfed in flames on the F train this morning. Footage shows her standing, at one point moves her leg. A person seated on the bench in front of the train watches her die, & a cop walks past without engaging.

First, ACAB, I don't expect them to help, but what is he supposed to do if he was inclined to? Pepper spray is flammable, and rounds don't put out fire. Cops are stupid, but they do know they can't put out fire. Subway cops don't typically carry extinguishers. I'd bet on the operator more.

To be honest, from IEDs and shit I've seen in theater, that lady was either dead or wished she was while standing there. There wasn't fuck all anyone could do at that point. Having been burned, it's a real fucked experience, and anyone that burned would rather die.

1-Use his radio to call for help; 2-There are fire extinguishers in the subway. Shoulda run for it. Don't walk past and keep going his way; 3-If he called for help and got confirmation someone was coming with extinguisher faster than he can get one, stay there and secure the scene.

I'm playing devil's advocate, and 🤷‍♂️ cause 🖕 the 🚓 1-The call was probably already out 2-I think he heading for the extinguisher, I don't think he saw a human standing due to shock 3-Securing the scene looks like standing around

i know it would be sick and awesome and righteous if they helped but what could they even do?? blow away the fire? Bad fire, stop it! ouuuhhh why i oughta arrest you and taze you..

I would understand that maybe if he had something to extinguish the fire he could have helped (and if he did, then shame on him for not helping) but i don't really see what he could do besides freak out like everyone else if he isn't specially equipped for dealing with fires like a pokemon

Not only did nothing, walked past like he was at the park, with ZERO ACKNOWLEDGEMENT of the situation! Like he was walking past a squirrel or something. Sociopath behavior. Notwithstanding a person on fire, how about a subway car fire and it spreading? WTAF???
