Popular misconception: most aren't. Though the hard-core blueskyers are using a *mostly* chronological one, the default has been algorithmic since 2024.

Jesus wept, wtf would anyone automatically put people on algorithms when they sign up... Do we really have to slam our hands in the same car doors over and over and over...

Setting BlueSky aside, my theory is that most people want a chrono feed, but algo is much better at sucking them in. That's why stated preference is so different than revealed preference in the data.

How would I find this out? I’d assumed it was chronological. But looking at some of the replies in earlier thread, looks like that isn’t the default? I would never intentionally change to algorithmic from chronological. But I also don’t bother changing default settings in most things.

Of course Following is *reverse* chronological. I think it’d be revolutionary to present the UI in top-down chronological, where you read from where you last left off and go top-to-bottom until you catch up to the present. Then new content fills in below. For us completionists who never miss a post.

I have nothing against algorithmic timelines in principle, but most are either optimizing for monetization and/or user attention rather than what the user actually *wants* to see, or else just aren't even good. So I basically always prefer chronological.

When I accidentally look at the Discover tab, I soon notice how weird it is. Then swipe back to the people I want to read. Missing "discourse" my para-friends aren't in is a non-problem.

Well, that was rather overwhelming. Self-selecting sample that's highly likely to be biased towards power users, of course, but that's sort of my point. Almost none of us are using the algorithmic timelines here.

I answered on the basis that I *mostly* use following. I'd say I'm about 90% following. The other 10% is when bored on a train or something and I've read my feed and I'm interested potentially in a "lucky dip" thing to read.
