I enjoy history, economics, politics, foreign policy and technology. I’m actually fairly knowledgeable about some of it. Over educated but under-credentialed. I have a fondness for Existentialism and Judaism.

Is it good when the Republican occupant of the White House needs to campaign in Texas for the Republican candidate? How’s about when the Secretary of State is doing it too?

If the Democrats really do have a wave in the election I am looking forward to some deep analysis of what impacts Republican redistricting had on those elections.

You can do the same thing, buying a house and borrowing against it—ha ha, just kidding, normal people get taxed annually on their wealth via property taxes, the "you can't tax wealth, the economy will collapse!" rule applies solely to the super-rich.

Steven T. Dennis@steventdennis.bsky.social

For the fabulously wealthy, paying taxes is pretty much optional. They can borrow against their vast wealth, which is mostly an untaxed capital gain, without paying taxes. When they die, the capital gain goes to zero. And loopholes exist to bypass the estate tax too.

Capital gains should be taxed when the assets are monetize, whether that's via sale or via loan

If anyone is raiding polling stations that is a failure of the security agencies and Netanyahu should resign since he is responsible for national security.

Netanyahu going full Trump. Must be looking bad for him.

One week out. The Democrats will gain control of the House, but will not get a majority in the Senate. I hope they get a majority in the Senate, but I don’t see it.

FWIW, Anthropic admits its current margins may not be representative. There's a bit of lucky timing here: big revenue growth while on the tail end of cheap compute contracted more than a year ago. Their future compute is... not so cheap. (1st pic their S-1, second are my graphics based on S-1.)

The unit economics here are frankly shocking they're so good. This is wildly stronger than I expected tbh.

What a bigot.

Related: I’m still looking for leads and help on jobs, fellowships, and freelance contracts on drones, GIS, aid, disaster, OSINT, tech ethics, and journalism. I simply will not work for evil people and/or weapons manufacturers, which is also why I haven’t had paying work since Trump 2.0 began.

This is one good example of how appropriations hardball can work if you're willing to not blink first. Another: take your pick for demands and restrictions on funding Executive Office of the President. Yes, literally defund the White House. EOP is the central hub of the assault on the Constitution.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

Is all this really feasible? Won't Trump refuse to sign anything like this? Won't he litigate it? Won't it lead to government shutdowns? Yes, yes, and yes. But it's still absolutely doable and necessary. Here's why: newrepublic.com/article/2171...

I don't know that there is a definitive line to cross that makes you say, "I live in a police state now" but when masked gunmen can routinely brutalize the public, citizen or immigrant alike, with impunity, you have reached that point.

Excellent deep dive by Abigail into the structural problems at the root of Israel’s endemic political crisis

This is a good primer on Israel's political situation going into tomorrow's election. But I'd like to go deeper on something he only touches on, which is that part of the reason for Israel's electoral doldrums (and resulting geopolitical chaos) is its broken political system bsky.app/profile/avis...

In about 24 hours, poles will open here in Israel. In what is a strong contender for Israel’s most critical elections. The election pits Netanyahu’s extremely unpopular coalition against a non-coherent, but moderately more liberal, opposition. Here are some thoughts as we head into it.
