“I mean, your society’s broken… Should we blame the rich, powerful people who caused it? No let’s blame the people with no power & no money & these immigrants who don’t even have the vote, yeah it must be their fucking fault.” —Iain Banks died #OTD, 9 June, 2013 www.theguardian.com/books/2013/j...

I interviewed Banks in 2008, for our little SF mag - my first interview, and I was starstruck. He was wonderfully warm and generous. We discovered we'd both been listening extensively to Warren Zevon in the previous week - a brilliant artist, gone too soon, as IMB noted. Banks too, too soon after.

Completely accurate irony. Also applies to the many Canadian provincial governments in charge of declining public healthcare, for over a decade. #abpol #onpol #skpol #cdnpol

The sublime(d) Iain. Loved him and his books. The world is a much poorer place for the loss of his clarity of thought and his humanity.

I reckon if he was alive today he'd be birlin' in his grave, so to speak. Imagine the list of targets he'd take aim at with his metaphoric shotgun. Where does his sense of anger reside these days in the pantheon of the literati?

Godsdamnit. Now I need to go back and reread his everything. I first came across Banks picking up The Player of Games as a goofy kid backpacking in England after high school. His scifi is immense, mind warping in scale. His fiction bleak and brutal like a Scottish winter storm.
