Mamdani: "I asked Dems, who did you vote for any why? I heard from them again and again -- 'I voted for Trump bc I could afford things that are now out of my reach.' Ultimately when I asked them what it would take to bring them back to the D Party, they said a relentless focus on an economic agenda"

This guy is failing already. The "economic agenda" is not a high priority for people whose lives are in danger as a result of the Trump regime's bigoted campaign of terror against the American people. I am not exaggerating when I say that I fear for my life every time I leave my house.

Everyone who cares about you is already going to vote to get Republicans gone. And all of us are going to try to convince others to care also, but we understand that is too slow of a process to rely on. We need people who are stubbornly selfish jerks to vote to get Republicans gone also.

That's literally the problem. We shouldn't HAVE to convince people to care because empathy and compassion are the BASELINE of the human experience. People who don't care for others are missing the fundamental element that differentiates humans from the rest of the animal kingdom.

More and more this is appearing to be the sad reality in our country. The suffering of our immigrant population, our trans population, Ukraine and Gaza, soon those on Medicaid, etc. None have the impact the price of a dozen eggs has. We didn’t used to be like this. Not the America I knew.

2 years ago, Brandon Johnson was elected mayor after pledging to bring a “bold progressive movement” to Chicago. today, he now has an approval rating of 14% focusing on an economic agenda doesn't mean it will pass or work, promising things to get elected and then not delivering causes disillusion

I am leery of Dems learning Trump tells simple lies to win, we tell complex truth so let's tell simple lies ourselves and then deal with the consequences later. all that causes is a swinging pendulum from GOP to Dem to GOP with things getting worse because of GOP (and it can't get worse than now)

I don’t believe it has anything to do with affordability anymore. This is just a hate filled agenda that reaches down to the worse in people that have been told they are wrong to be racist.

Then you need to change the Democratic economic policies to sound and act less corporate. A few million 'not true Democrats' sat on their hands last election because Trump promised to lower costs and the Democratic party promised that they would keep things the same. (Not that Trump followed it.)

Looks like Mamdani spoke with only stupid dems, because only stupid dems would think trump would ever do anything to benefit them. I would not tailor my political philosophy based on what stupid dems say. That said,

When I read or hear this statement about the high cost cost of living I feel that these people are being lazy and selfish. Inflation was going down while Biden was President and the cost of living will rise under Trump. He told everyone that and they still voted for him

Prices are so much higher now than they were under Biden. Inflation from 2020-2024 was caused by the failure to manage the global pandemic and ensuing supply chain disruption. Inflation now is caused by the tariff chaos. Trump both times at the root of it

The average person does not have the energy to care about such things if they can't afford to eat. If you don't address people's basic needs you get fascism, a historical pattern that keeps returning (same in 1930s). People who have nothing listen to demagogues, people who are comfortable do not.

The importance of rights & democracy of course cannot be overstated but to someone who is barely making ends meet those seem like abstract concepts or likely exaggerations. It also doesn't help that the USA does not have functioning news media doing anything like journalism, keeping people informed.

Sorry but “I could afford things now out of my reach” sounds like luxury goods not basics. I understand that when you cannot out food on the table you care less about who is in power and more about pocket book issues but Harris was clear about putting more $$ in working people’s pockets.

This tells me 2 things 1.) We really need to address the deterioration of critical thinking skills 2.) If you can be… entertaining? captivating? human?… enough with your campaign advertising to hook in their interest then you can just lean on your simple, rational policies to reel them in

Clearly messaging has to be less nuanced and more approachable Also - he's talking about people in NY. If someone chose to vote for trump, in NY, as a way to protest / voice disapproval with the Dem messaging, it wouldn't be that shocking In a swing state that is very different

I don't disagree that the democrats suck at messaging. It's been endlessly frustrating. For God's sakes we went to war for WMD and let Kerry get swiftboated and the Dems still have not learned how to get out the message. It's concerning that the dems still have no answer for this shit.

Yall refuse to see the medias role. For 3-4 years under Biden it was “inflation, groceries, things are bad”. Any message republicans came up with the media carried. They gave them more airtime too. Its hard to over come Trumps presence and the media aiding him.

Trump never once said how he’d lower costs. Literally only talked about tariffs. Gaslit people to think its good. Never laid out a plan. Thought process seemed to be “well costs were lower with Trump b4 maybe they will be again” (no explanation of how)They thought they could tolerate the other stuff

Honestly no, it's going to be a repetition unless the Politicians in power now are given real consequences, otherwise they're going to take advantage of their stupidity yet again as they did with Reagan, Bush, and Trump.

This is not about stupidity, but about Dems failing to address the direct needs of people by sticking to the same old ideas and many flocking to their opponent because he promised (lied) to do something about their economic problems. and these are real problems that Biden did not adequately address.

You can talk all you want about how 'great' your economy supposedly is in numbers but if people cannot afford rent and groceries that is not good enough and you are not going to win any votes with that approach, as we saw with Harris.

The game was never meant to be played like that. Even the Bible speaks of coming out from among them. We're the idiots giving them cover for their folly. They squeal like pig's falling on their own swords. They were only following orders is their usual stupid defense.

The ignorance is radiant. The only reason they could afford those things was because it was still Obama’s economy. I don’t know anyone who is saying they were better off in 2020 financially than they were in 2017.

Joe Biden built Dems the economy that was the envy of the world, so they voted for Trump, got predictably screwed, and now demand a relentless focus on the economy before they will deign to vote for Dems again? I cannot even.

This “economic insecurity” argument completely ignores the core issue of Trump’s support, white grievance. They don’t really give a rat’s ass about the price of eggs or a gallon of gas.

Been hearing this for literally decades! I’m sorry no amount of “messaging” is going to get people who can’t see their benefits to see their benefits. Maybe it truly will take a catastrophe like what is coming to make them see.

Which part is "not true" according to you? Wages having plummeted relative to actual cost of living is a fact. You need only compare the rise of housing cost relative to salaries on a graph for the past decades to see people are significantly poorer now than they were. Plus now this energy crisis.

I call BS Biden and Harris focused on making things more affordable, giving tax breaks to buy a home, childcare deductibles, literally her whole agenda was about the economy. They still voted for the person who will make things less affordable as well as gut our social safety net

Those voters are stupid and they need to suffer to learn. It’s the only language they understand. Fickle, decadent, ignorant. Can’t believe I lifted a finger to help save this country from itself.

I like Mamdani, but I believe firmly that a lot of these people simply did not want to vote for a Black woman. They are not going to say that to him ofc and he obviously can't say it on TV, but I think inflation was a beard for many voters.

I love his opening statement, “we decided to change our instinct from lecturing to listening.” That’s the ❤️ of the playbook; Clinton was “I feel your pain”, Trump verbalized the rigged system to say govt was the problem and Mamdani said let’s make actionable the needs of the people #5NN @unftr.com

He made it up. Only 5% of Dems voted for Trump and at the same time 5% of Reps voted for Harris. But he's going to an extreme exaggeration and portraying it like a huge number of Dems voted for Trump. Also, they voted for Trump because of hate and bigotry but nothing else, and he knows it.

RESIST OR DEMOCRACY IS DEAD #THERESISTANCE #RESIST Have an idea to make these Republicans hate their life. This can start NOW. Anytime you want to vent frustration, call up any Congress member - let it all out on their voicemail. Just don't make any threats to harm or take any lives. 🔄 REPOST

Assuming the median voter makes any attempt to have a cohesive political viewpoint is operating in a fantasy. Promise and deliver material improvements or keep losing elections.

No, they were struggling under Biden because of massive inflation and could still afford things before under Trump (mainly thanks to Obama's policies), so you're mixing up the timeline there. If they were doing great in 2024 they wouldn't have voted for Trump.

After reviewing as much data as I could find, you are correct. While Mamdani gained a lot of support from progressive and outer-borough Black and Latinx voters, he underperformed compared to Cuomo & Harris among Jewish voters & many traditional Black voting blocs.

A vote for Trump was almost never about his economic agenda, except for the truly naive and gullible (they do exist). Most of his voters liked the hate & racism. Claiming you voted for Trump because of his economics is what you say to people when you don’t want to be outed as a bigot. 🤷🏻‍♂️

A large % of them barely pay attention to politics at all, actually. That's how most of America operates. This is why simple and straight-forward messaging / policy goals like Mamdani utilized (as well as Trump..) works and is important that others do the same if they want a chance

Honestly infuriating. Even if all Trumps policies were better for me financially, he’d still be a corrupt, soulless monster. There’s more to life than money. There’s more to politics than the economy. I care about the planet. I care about women having rights.

it was an unfortunate time for Biden/Harris who led over the fastest recovering economy Fox exploited inflation due to start up and refused to show context while other media (CNN, MSNBC ETC) acknowledged the good job BUT always asked "But do you really feel like it's getting better?"

So they didn't like that they had money in their pocket, Biden was lowering costs (gas, Rx, etc). The WH (and in this case, the Mayor) don't control grocery prices. People screamed about egg prices while ignoring a Bird Flu outbreak that Trump ignored & drove prices UP. Was never about economics

I guess they love losing their Medicaid, giving more tax breaks to the 1%, and rejoiced at deportation and arrest of those who bring food to our table, works at construction sites, hotels. Magats are rotting maggots.

This is so dumb. Do these voters who call themselves Dems not understand that inflation was a global phenomenon triggered by the pandemic. It wasn’t caused by the party. And it was made worse by careless conservative politicians. I fucking hate how this narrative has been mainstreamed.

This response just proves to me how incredibly dumb some of y’all are. Life is unaffordable so you voted for the political party that had no really economic agenda and what they did have was estimated to triple the national debt??

MAGA is primarily a cultural movement. Trump validates MAGA’s cultural identity. Policy is SECONDARY. MAGA wants “traditional values” and “traditional roles” between the genders, races and LGBTQ community while owning the Libs and being transgressive. This is the MAGA upside down- not the economy.

If a Dem said they voted for Trump, they were either super racist (Dem racist? Ok fine), not actually a Dem (more likely), never watched the news or read a newspaper article, or the dumbest person on the planet.

Big difference between having economic concerns and being dumb enough to vote for Trump. Leftist who did nothing but shit on Harris in the run up to the election were not helping.

Maybe if him and his DSA buddies and oh what about Holocaust Harris had showed up for Harris we wouldn't have trump now. But no unless their perfect candidate runs they sit out or protest vote because their idol said burn down the establishment. They believe center and moderates are to blame

as much or more so than MAGA. Most educated voters are not extremely right or left because they understand in a 2 party system you have to have bipartisan working relationships. The problem in this country is the right fuked off far right and far left fuked off further right. I haven't changed

I grew up poor in the 80’s and could tell, even then, that republicans didn’t care about the poor (and every person I knew was Republican, my parents included). Between trump, Covid, and social media, our country has lost its grip on reality and what really matters.

If anyone voted for Trump despite all the clear messages that he and his Republican oligarchy would oppress them, steal them blind, destroy democracy, trash every moment of peace, and destroy the economy along with it, there was never anything that would bring them around. There still isn't.

This NYT/Ipsos poll on the top five concerns for voters, versus what voters thought were the top five for the D's and R's showed that the D's only had one area of overlap, health care, while the R's had three areas of overlap--the economy, immigration and taxes.

I voted for Harris because I'm not stupid. I paid attention to what Trump really is morally and nentslky, and what Biden had really done vs how it was portrayed. Sorry, not sorry, but the young saying they voted for Trump because of the economy shows the failure of our education system.

It’s like they forgot that we had just experienced a global pandemic and inflation was occurring world wide. They also forgot that it was the orange fucking felon that mishandled the pandemic response and crashed our economy in the first place. It’s like people’s brains stopped working.

BS, very few Dems voted for Trump, this guy is making up stuff now. Trump voters voted for him because hate and bigotry, even if they are economically depressed they still don't care about their own welfare and willing to suffer a lot as long as the people they hate are being punished.
