This is a new deep-field image from JWST, designed to look for the point of origin of a fast radio burst. The bright, multi-point features are stars in the Milky Way. Everything else is an entire galaxy.

This is a photo of some rocks and sand. It was taken earlier today, with a camera 247,000,000 km away. It was taken on Mars. And now you're looking at it on your screen.

Depeche Mode’s “Music for the Masses” turns 39 today. Of the single “Strangelove”, Alan Wilder said: “I can't even say how many times we had to redo it. We had to change the bass line at least 100 times .. We wanted to do it well — and all that for a result which, in my opinion, is not excellent.”

I expect economic problems next year, not only because war-caused supply crunches keep growing, trade wars deepening, and uncertainty discouraging business investment, but also because Trump and the GOP Congress deliberately scheduled most of the pain of their healthcare cuts for after the midterms.

Rural hospitals closing or shutting down key departments like obstetrics will be one of the biggest stories of 2027. Democrats need to make it one of the biggest stories of the next two months.

The US bombed Iran again, to stop Iran from laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, which the US president said was free of mines and totally open, using naval capabilities he claimed they didn’t have, thereby restarting fire in a war to reopen the strait that was open before the US started the war.

The Odyssey was worth the ticket price albeit some of the dialogue combined with the scenery was an extended version of a Calvin Klein commercial 😅.

Monet created 108 pastels, often gifted to friends or sold cheaply—revealing a softer, sketch-like side of the master. They remind us Monet wasn’t only a maker of grand masterpieces, but also an artist of unrehearsed creativity.

The Stones release “Honky Tonk Women” 57 years ago today — a country/western vibe inspired by the cowboys who worked at the Brazilian ranch where Jagger and Richards were vacationing. Richards said it was “one of those tracks that you knew was a #1 before you’d finished the mother—er.” 🔥

Pearl Jam’s “Alive” turns 35 today. “The original story being told in the song is that of a young man being made aware of some shocking truths,” said Vedder. But after years of audiences singing “I’m still alive .. it’s like they’re celebrating .. They changed the meaning .. They lifted the curse.”

This is bad. At least 9 county prosecutors in pro-Trump areas of Virginia have now openly declared that they won't enforce the assault weapons ban that the Dem state legislature recently passed. It's a MAGA nullification movement. New piece from me: newrepublic.com/article/2114...

If local officials can simply decide which laws they will and won’t enforce based on politics, then what exactly is the point of passing laws in the first place? MAGA spent years demanding “law and order.” Apparently that only applies when they agree with the outcome.

Richard Gere on Trump: “We’re living in the darkest moment that I’ve experienced on this planet. Whoever thought America could turn like this? Whoever thought that a maniac like this would become president and dismantle all the good things?”

It mightn't look like much. But this little red dot is a supermassive black hole about 50 million times more massive than the Sun, its light dating to just 700 million years after the Big Bang—when the Universe was just 5% its current age. It is insane to me that we can see this far back.

This is Edward. He was given 6 months to live after being found as a stray. His family was determined to give him the best few months possible, so they introduced him to the ice cream truck. That was 27 months ago. 14/10 #SeniorPupSaturday (IG: magnificent_foster_dogs)
