The internet has become extraordinarily good at distributing moral indignation. It remains remarkably bad at distributing moral responsibility.

Yeah that’s the case Just don’t believe people who post doomer stuff. If they’re right somehow, we’re doomed and we can’t do anything, so why even think about it? Act like your choices matter

Hi. 👋 If you're reporting on the DOJ's latest ridiculous demands, it'd be nice if you added the tiny little tidbit to your headline that election officials don't actually have to respond to a letter from the DOJ that's got no real law behind it. Even when the demands are in bold italics.

also want to remind you, gently or not, that unverified "the infernal machine switched my vote!!1!1?!" rumors are utterly bog standard every single election, but it's easily verifiable that, for example, no county in South Carolina uses DREs so what they're claiming is simply not physically possible

As we approach the midterms, remember that the Alt National Park Service is a merch sales operation claiming without evidence to be a group of federal employees, and is not a genuine source of news about elections of any kind. Please get your election info from a local, reputable source.

One of my browsers announced an update. YOU MAY NOTICE HOW DIFFERENT IT LOOKS!! THE FANCY NEW [thing]! WE WORKED ON IT VERY HARD! Regret to inform: I did not notice until it was pointed out. It had no effect on my work. I hope it makes someone's day, though, and good luck to you.

whatever your evaluation of kotek's tenure, i hope it's objectively clear to anyone reading my dumb posts it'd be such a colossal unmitigated disaster to have drazan laying out the welcome mat for Trump's agenda and spending an entire four years vetoing anything remotely good the legislature passes

100% of the claims that “they let Trump get away by slow-walking it” are post-hoc BS If they’d brought charges on 1/21, we get to the same point and the same people are saying “they rushed it on purpose to let Trump get away”

This is all laid out in the article! And there's no paywall! I am once again begging everyone to READ THE ARTICLE & FIND OUT WHAT'S ACTUALLY GOING ON before reposting with "We're all so cooked, our votes won't be counted"-type comments. THAT is actual voter suppression.

Anyone declaring a "One Weird Trick" to instantly win *anything* in politics either doesn't know anything about politics, or assumes that *you* know nothing about politics. And a lot of folks are failing that test badly. And this goes triple for any issue that's lasted generations like I/P

And vote Democratic if you *really* believe it.

There is not a single pol that I think is a bigot because of merely one terribly bigoted notion, specially if they are pretty solid on the category of concern otherwise. I'm old enough to see much of the population grow and change on an issue that now we take for granted.

There is no "both sides lose" option. This is something a lot of these people can't seem to wrap their brain around. If you push for dems to lose you are responsible if republicans win. You can't push for one and then try to claim no responsibility for the other because they are causally related.

So much like many things - capitalism, representative democracy, adversarial justice systems with juries - the system is imperfect and unfair, crafted by those in power to retain power *and yet* still better on net for the rest of us when compared with the present available alternatives.

if you believe in "from each according to their ability, to each according to their needs" (I do): 1) the system for deciding "needs" sucks 2) it's the one we have & ain't getting better soon 3) if it does get better, it gets better via elections 4) increase your own ability to meet others' needs

The leftist idea that I've seen on here recently that democrats have NEVER helped anyone or done anything really devalues basic left-wing arguments. If the social programs of the past helped no one, why do more social programs? And frankly it devalues the millions of people those programs helped.

The fact that a joint technology program for missile defense, cyber, and AI, is being portrayed as “merging militaries” by so many accounts, and often with similar responses of uncritical outrage shows both the dangers of social media and how primed people are to believe libels based on the target.

A lot of this rhetoric makes people feel like they and their families deserve violence and don't deserve safety, when their family history is one of being physically and socially attacked, deported, segregated, and/or murdered. No one can be expected to take that in stride.

But now suddenly, in the new environment of the online left, there's permission to recycle those old antisemitic jokes so long as you whitewash them in the right way, direct them at the Jews whom it is permissible to hate and denigrate. That's still antisemitism no matter what people tell themselves

Weftage reposted

Replying to @eleanor.lockhart.contact

and because anti-Israel activism coalesces all those tropes, that means it's sitting there, appealing in every possible way to someone who already has primed themselves to believe in an elite manipulating everything, so it consumes their minds and their rhetoric

Weftage reposted

Replying to @eleanor.lockhart.contact

you simply cannot be an advocate for both "the will of the people" and left-wing ideas because we've repeatedly seen "the people" are not highly left-wing so the only way you can remain a populist and left-wing is by saying that some insidious elite is manipulating everything

Weftage reposted

Popularism and populism both derive from the same essential impulse, which is to construct a synthetic version of The People that will cure democracy of the need to adjudicate between competing claims.

I’ve said before, many times, that basically every stripe of American politics believes that everyone else is just deluded or acting against their interest for some reason, instead of having genuinely held principles to the same degree as their own ones

Weftage reposted

People do not understand that the whole point of democracy is not to "win," but rather to have a nonviolent means of deciding policy that results in a reasonably acceptable compromise that most of society can live with. It fails to achieve optimal goals because there's not one optimal set of goals.

J. C. Cantwell 🌻@segfaultvicta.aludel.xyz

you will never have a Senate full of people who are three microns away from physically destroying each other and loudly celebrating each others' deaths and if you do - and the Trumpian world HAS shifted, hard, in this way, *and it sucks* - it means you have already failed at being a democracy

The very unsexy reality is that winning the war is not the main issue. Wars are won all the time, and then started again. Winning the peace is, and it involves an inhuman quantity of the kind of care work no one likes to think about too hard.

This isn't complicated: Don't rape women. Don't ignore issues in a ballot box that would be massive red flags in a job interview. Don't confuse performative theater for the job of a legislator. The Republicans have proven what happens if do those things. We don't need to copy them.

A key to staying sane in trying times is to realize that your ability to create change, even in the best of times, is very limited, but your ability to make yourself feel bad about politics, or anything really, is basically unlimited and making yourself feel bad doesn’t make change more likely

people on the internet overrate the power and importance of words on screens, and underrate the power and importance of everything else. words are ofc very useful, but you can mostly just write whatever you want without constraints. not so with everything else. reality is brutally constraining.

And it's not because Democrats or "centrists" are holding them back because we love rich people or some shit. It's because we don't want the mass death and suffering that comes with revolutions, nor do we want the power vacuum (quickly filled with bullies) that comes after.
