The police are doing normal, necessary police work across a city of over 400K people. They can't send half the force to follow 2000 ICE agents around and protect hundreds of protesters from them. ICE needs to leave. ICE is the problem, not the local police.

Local PD does not have the manpower to confront ICE. There are plenty of cops who dislike ICE, more and more are starting to hate that agency. 3000 field agents and maybe 1500 local PD, county sheriff's deputies and state patrol. A lot of that number are admin, jail personnel, and desk types.

It's not that simple. Local police can't legally interfere with federal officers enforcing immigration laws. The Supremacy Clause of the constitution prohibits it. If ICE breaks local laws they might be able to detain them, but the police are outnumbered and ICE quickly hides them in Fed buildings.
