That's an amazing step forward, much appreciated! It would be awesome if you'd also take a similar approach with both visual and written material. Regardless of the site's focus being music, the parasitic technology remains the same, and we're all in this together.

As an artist who has been using your services since Bandcamp was founded, thank you for taking a stand against fascism, and continuing to bolster independent musicians by giving them a platform to share their work with others

A nice step forward but I wish it extended to all GenAI, not just sound Visual art is intrinsically, deeply connected to music releases. Only banning GenAI sounds sends the message that visual artists are less important/not valued; that it's acceptable to replace their works with AI while music isnt

You should also make sure you make the distinction between A.I. and Generative by dividing the two terms. Generative Music has existed since the original Moog systems. Ambient and atmospheric can be "generated" with careful patching of instruments. the two terms are not one in the same.

Those tools wouldn't count as ai, they are real life recorded voices and the software requires you to come up with the lyrics, melodies etc.. it's still a very human made thing. They use a little bit of ai but only for getting more realistic vibrato curves and pitch slides

no. if bandcamp's definition of AI includes vocaloid they will simply change their definition to exclude vocaloid, as per the divine directive of Hatsune Miku.

Great step. Because I don't want to pay a lot of money for AI slop. And yeah, as others have said, it would be great if you banned AI cover images too. How do you absolutely validate if AI is used in music, though? I figure for electronic music, DAW files could work. But for older musicians, videos?

I was scared by this announce about what i would find inside. I'm glad about how strict it is and respectful for the future of human made music. And to go further, I will also add like other people here to clarify your view about album covers.

This is the right move. Art is human. I'll continue to support and purchase music through Bandcamp.

It is reassuring to see Bandcamp addressing the topic of generative AI. Ensuring that artists can continue to create music and that fans can trust the music they find on the platform is essential.

Whatever your ideological views on the policy, enforcement is vague and risks real harm to artists with false AI claims that leads to their work being removed. Not confident any of us - users or moderators- are good at spotting AI music anymore medium.com/@technogonzo...

medium.comBandcamp just banned generative AI. How exactly are they going to enforce it?While Bandcamp’s ban on generative AI feels like an ideological landmark, the reality of enforcing the policy is backward.

People need to take time to add credits to bandcamp pages and a real band image. The ones I have reported are very obvious. Lots of releases close together, no credits for anything, cover art that was clearly generated with the same prompts, ai summary of the music, no photos of the musicians.

I completely agree, but why aren't Bandcamp offering this guidance to real artists on the platform? That could, like you say, help them differentiate themselves from obvious violations of the AI policy
