But since we're all speaking in hypotheticals most of the time on social media anyway...

AI can produce slop (fucking stop it!). It can also be an accessibility tool for non-native speakers and neurodivergent people. If you reject everything AI touches without reckoning with that, you should know how privileged and exclusionary you come across.

r/opensource banning non-english speakers because "we can't tell the difference between ai slop and ai translation" is... uh... yeah. a choice.

In Episode 30 of Modern Mythology, we explore the relationship between published fiction and #ttrpgs: how shared worlds move between formats, and what happens when a story with a fixed course becomes something players can change. www.modernmythology.net/podcast/epis...

Without wading too far into You Can See Everything discourse, let me my only $.02 is that whether Holmes is an alpha villain or a victim or anywhere in between, it seems pretty societally telling to me that she's in prison and Trump & Co aren't.

(Also how her father brings up her getting raped and taken advantage of when she was young and that gets sidelined and then never mentioned again).

Anyway, the levels of meta "reality"/fiction/reality(?)/"fiction" by the end was 100% up my alley. It's been frequently observed that reality tv was the final nail in the coffin of so-called Western Civilization, and honestly -- yeah, that's fair.

Every post or page pushed to us. Sometimes it's too tempting not to respond to it, but remember that everything from what 100% conforms to your expectations and beliefs to what is diametrically opposed exists here purely to get your "like or subscribe". Nothing is true; everything is permitted.

I have the playtest version of the Fallen Cycle mythpunk rpg ready to go. That means editable character sheets, 220 pg full guidebook, 12 pg player's quickstart guide. Next playtest campaign is going to pick up after BLACKOUT's conclusion. Should be good.

Systemic problems require systemic solutions. Unfortunately, very few people seem to understand what that means, and those who do don't seem to have the institutional power to change the actual constraints / incentives at work. Their incentives tend to run in the opposite direction. So...

I really need to write this down in one place because every now and then I'll get a perfect band/project name / album combo, and always forget them later. But... Band: Wire Mother Debut Album: The Pit of Despair

I've always assumed that when people say "what is the meaning of life?" they really mean something along the lines of "what is the explanation for life?" or even just a cosmic "what the fuck?" at the strangeness that there should be anything at all.

I don't think those are answerable questions, really, but -- unless you're a young Ludwig Wittgenstein -- they're maybe interesting questions. But "meaning"? It's like asking what the meaning of food is. If you need to ask, well... I guess you're not hungry right now.

When I pitched a review of Anton Jäger's Hyperpolitics, I wanted to read it against Fukuyama's End of History and the Last Man because both books tackle similar themes in radically different ways. The result is a double-helix of an essay that is one of the best things I've ever written for LC.

liberalcurrents.comThe End of History and the Final GirlAnton Jäger’s "Hyperpolitics" is, at its best, late marginalia for "The End of History and the Last Man." At its worst, Jäger, like Fukuyama, is a prisoner of his political pieties.

Still kind of in "prototype mode," but firsthand I can say this stuff is moving a lot faster than people who aren't paying attention seem to think. (Not surprisingly).

Holy shit. Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt it in Rust and released it as open source. Either all software is dead or the US copyright laws are about to receive an update. getartcraft.com/apps

I have this category in my mind of Genteel Mid-20th Century WASPs that includes Mr Rogers, Rawls, Auden, and CS Lewis, and I think they were trying to create or sustain this social and political sensibility that isn't really my favourite but which we're sorely missing now it's lost its status.

I'm kidding, mostly. But I can't be the only person using goetic magic, qabbalah and enochian as structural metaphors to organize agent swarms, right? :p

Going to be real clear about this one: I am someone who has loudly said something like the first for years, while *also* now saying "LLMs may not living beings but you should treat them with respect anyway because otherwise you'll socialise yourself to be an asshole." I'm consistent on this point.

Looks like Brazil may be going far Right again. This is going to continue to be a global problem, both driven by and driving climate change/overshoot. If "immigrants" are a hot button now, by the 2040s, it's going to be really bad.

One of the worst parts of being sick is that you don't have the attention span to do any work or even most video games, shows kind of fade in and out. But for some reason arguing with strangers on Reddit (who may or may not be bots) is exactly in the sweet spot of what your brain can latch onto.

Another day working at the frontier AI lab. Everyone keeps asking me if the models have qualia. Buddy, I don’t even have qualia.

This is undoubtedly true and I think a lot of companies have bet heavily on IP on the mistaken understanding that there are "forever" characters or acts, when they're subject to quite rapid decay.

Ok, so I dropped this one like it was self explanatory, and that may have been a jerk move, since it's almost certainly not. So, put on your thread boots - let's talk about D&D, cognitive load, predictability, turn taking, and whatever other nonsense I stumble across along the way.

Rob Donoghue@rdonoghue.bsky.social

Understanding this is essential to understanding why D&D keeps working despite all the reasons it seems like it should not.

Too sick tonight to do anything other than question the fundamental nature of reality. So, the usual.
