this is a first: "don't build a protected bike lane/pedestrian crossing because a drunk driver will hit it"

They put a Give Way sign in the middle of the road at a T junction near us - I would imagine after complaints of aggressive drivers cutting the corner as they turned in. It was knocked down within a day, replaced and knocked down again three days later. Should have put a traffic island in.

Any Reichert fucking suuuuuucks; getting her to block me on Twitter a few years ago by calling her out constantly was a very proud moment in my waning days on that hell site

one of the most fundamental ideological differences i have with the carbrained is that i think that the priorities of all road design should be primarily to protect human life, but secondarily to have material consequences for reckless behavior. if you're driving drunk, your car SHOULD get totalled

Wait: I thought that making drunk drivers self-identify by smashing harmlessly into concrete barriers instead of innocent bystanders was actually sort of a good idea??? Weird to see the “gotta protect them drunk drivers“ contingent coming on strong…

Hurting the feelings of someone in a steel cage weighing thousands of pounds and drunk no less has more weight than people walking or biking who could be hit by the drunk.

If you're not familiar with the alcohol consumption by decile chart, it's a real eye opening look at what being a hardcore alcoholic is like

This is a well lit refuge island that during construction that has temporary bollards and will eventually have striping. If it is getting hit frequently, the entire road geometry needs to change because it was built highly unsafely

yeah the counter to this is simply "okay that's better than hitting pedestrians and other cars". almost every concern of "wasteful spending" on sustainable infrastructure is just mental gymnastics

This is the first-resort argument in San Francisco, eg for the new chicanes in Outer Sunset. Literally “drivers will simply smash into these at the speed they are used to driving” totally missing the point

An Idaho legislator posited that curb extensions were dangerous because he could see tire marks on some of them. I guess those interstate median jersey barriers with vehicle marks all over them are also unsafe. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
