The La Salle Hotel?! It had two stairs! It was also 22 stories tall and had 1,172 guest rooms. This is what chairs of important ICC committees (not randos!) think is in the same universe as a small apartment building.

Mo Zhu@moinmybackyard.bsky.social

Now we are talking about why multiple stairs were required. Wycoff hotel in Atlanta 119 people dead. Photograph of lady who jumped out of the building. [it's a black and white photo because we are using examples from the before times.] Also cites Lasalle Hotel 61 dead and Dubuque 16 dead.

This slide explains a lot about how ICC insiders think. Apartment buildings are for poor people who cannot be trusted.

Mo Zhu@moinmybackyard.bsky.social

Making an argument about disparate impact on lower income folks. lower income people have higher incidence of fire. C: how is this not a social equity issue? How can we reduce life safety in order to generate affordability? [They are confusing poor people housing with overall housing supply.]

what happens when a post get a lot of likes on bluesky (positive interactions) is a lot nicer than what used to happen on twitter (slurs)

A vote for Kotek is a vote to ensure that any progressive initiative you care for, virtually anything championed by your favorite local councilors or legislators, isn’t just obliquely vetoed, obstructed or administered out of viability for the next four years.

pnwpolicyangel aka Angelita 👼@pnwpolicyangel.bsky.social

I’m very critical of Tina Kotek and people need to vote for her anyway. There’s no ranked choice in this race. The governor has the power to call in the national guard, or affect voting. That alone is too important. Christine Drazan is too dangerous. Hold your nose and do it.

Here’s what’s going on. Baby boomers bought houses for cheap and then spent decades showing up to meetings demanding nothing else could be built in their neighborhoods so that their houses would see exponential increases in value, and now they don’t want that value taxed.

Politico@politico.com

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Anti-tax movements are, at their core, simply people that don't understand how society works and are resentful that it imposes any demands on them.

Yes, absolutely. For example, if in the next few weeks, Trump sends ICE officers to polls, you know what you do? You go anyway, you throw them a middle finger, and you walk into the ballot box and don't let them intimidate you. What you don't do is despair and stay home.

Chris Geidner@chrisgeidner.bsky.social

I said this in a thread last night and in a thousand threads before it, but you really are doing the work of those who would destroy democracy and the rule of law when you are a doomer. You can be aware of — and vigorously oppose — the lawlessness of this administration without insisting on doom.

"when members of both parties say they want safer roads, they mean they want people to behave better on the roads and maybe that auto manufacturers should build safer cars, when pushed. They do not mean that they would require roads to be designed in ways that produce safer results"

bethosborne.bsky.social@bethosborne.bsky.social

The point is that progressive leadership does not tend to result in progressive transportation policy. If groups that want the outcomes that progressives claim to care about then they need to dial up the pressure for real actions. bethosbornesga.substack.com/p/electing-p...

With gas prices hitting an all time high, consumers are feeling the burn at the pump. But some commuters in Idaho are finding a cheaper, healthier way out. From saving money to skipping traffic jams, it seems the bicycle is becoming the ultimate urban escape from rising fuel costs.

Does this exist in Canada? I have never seen or heard of it. Even when I lived in not especially walkable suburbs and small towns, residential streets were generally fine to trick-or-treat.

Qagggy!@qagggy.bsky.social

America has a thing called Trunk or Treat where people dress up, drive to a parking lot, and pretend it's ok we don't have walkable communities anymore.

Thoughts on the new trains: Great! But... Amtrak needs to figure out the bike situation in the Airo Trains. As it stands now, the new trains have 6 checked bike spaces, and conductors have said that half of the bikes will need a front wheel removed to get them to both fit.

The old trainsets have had 10 bike spaces for 10+ years, and nobody had to take their wheels off. Now, only 3 people will be able to load their bikes and keep the wheels on.

Claude estimated this letter to be written at a 10th to 12th grade reading level, which means no one who voted for Trump will be able to understand it.

Tens of millions of American motorists believe there's nothing wrong with texting at a stoplight. Or driving 73 in a 60mph zone. Or changing lanes without signaling. Or rolling right on red without coming to a full stop. But somebody has to do something about cyclists who don't follow the rules.

I didn’t attend climate week but: 1—US is falling way behind on electrification 2—even if US electrified, electricity generation isn’t decarbonizing fast enough 3—public incentives & land use policy are still vastly weighted toward inefficient cars & trucks 4—transit ridership remains in crisis

tragic news: mr. rodgers neighborhood has been downzoned, following a lengthy public hearing process. the commercial and multifamily uses have been deemed "incompatible" with the character of the surrounding single family neighborhood. all nonconforming structures have been ordered demolished.

certainly has some relevancy to today's politics that older generations grew up experiencing cities as profoundly dangerous places, and even if cities are much safer now people would never find out thanks to endless bludgeoning of URBAN CRIME WAVE on Fox News activating the collective lizard brain

Stephen Judkins@stephenjudkins.bsky.social

This is a really insane chart and it boggles my mind to think about what it must have felt like living in the 1970-1990 period. Look at that rate of change! Two giant leaps in two decades! Imagine the politics if this happened today
