Bezos isn't destroying the Washington Post because it isn't profitable. He's destroying the Washington Post because he's calculated that a robust free press threatens the ability of his class to warp society around their interests

Please don't report this as a straightforward business story; it's a story about coercive social transformation being imposed by people so rich they've ceased to see the rest of us as legitimate stakeholders in our own lives

The business story is that these guys have so much money that they don’t have to care about making good business decisions, they can make horrible ones with zero material effect on their finances

I may hate Walt Hussman's worldview and his regional media monopolies but it gives me a weird sense of calm to know that he has a worldview that isn't "the world is mine to do with what I will."

Fingerling potato covers it all. Incidentally, I have always called him Mr. Potato Head. However, fingerling potato is a much more apt description of what he actually looks like. Have a beautiful day. And, thank you for the laugh. It was my first laugh of the day.

When building their bunkers and trying to figure out security, advisors suggested allowing security workers to bring their families to foster loyalty but the super rich said "nah."

The Post has been losing money for a long time, especially since when he cancelled the paper's endorsement of Harris. The losses are a pittance to someone like him. Hoping his airplane mechanics think they can save him money by removing a third of the parts in the name of efficiency.

I can’t imagine MAGAts paying a subscription to any print news media, so it will be interesting to see whether Bezos will simply fund a propaganda rag, or turn it into a soft porn maga manga to make it profitable.

Some may be missing the point. Bezos already did the damage when most of the top journalists left shortly after the arrival of Will Lewis. Now that the WP is acknowledged as only a hollow lie machine, he's finishing what he started. Bezos has only found success by being a double-edge grifter.

"Delete me. Go on, I dare you. In fact, I double dog dare you." Seriously though. Life is possible, enjoyable even, after deleting this Trump funding fucknut. Stop funding MAGA nazis.

I personally think he just lost interest in his “toy” and moved on to Blue origin where he needs approval from the Trump admin which plays into decimating the Post which he no longer gives two shits about

We need to go back to the laws of the land. You step on my toes I break your ankle, you'll never do it again. This needs to be the way to deal with ICE. If you're American, you don't have to take that shit, and when they try it, every citizen need around needs to gang up on them. Gloves off

If you’re using Instagram, Meta, Messenger or X, you’re supporting the pedophiles. #impeach_pedophile_trump #mask_off_ice #defund_ice Turn over all of the Epstein files. #pedophilemusk #fuckzuck #pedophiletrump #hookermelania #felontrump #rapisttrump #fmaga #idaho_GOP_pedophiles

““..privileged princes of these new economic dynasties, thirsting for power, reached out for control over Government itself. They created a new despotism and wrapped it in the robes of legal sanction…And as a result the average man once more confronts the problem that faced the Minute Man.”(FDR)

This is why I canceled the Wapo after he quashed the Harris endorsement. Tim Cook is why I won't have an IPhone. Mark Zuckerberg is why I canceled all things Meta. Google is why I went to Duck Duck Go. Bari Weiss is why I don't watch CBS. At this point, anyone who supports the above, supports MAGA.

Facebook won’t let me delete my account. Since when does an app have the right not to allow you to delete an app? I’m not talking about logging out and putting it back into the App Store. I wanted to delete all of the information on it. That kind of **** should be illegal.

I'll bet They changed their TOS on 1/1/25 It took over an hr to delete my accounts on 1/31/24 Zuckerberg's Meta is being run by poached employees of Project 2025. The new President & Vice Chairman of Meta is a former NSA advisor in the 1st Trump administration.... Support Meta Support Maga

They won’t send me a password link so that I can change it. That’s how it started in the first place. I had forgotten my password and I wanted to change it. Instead, they kept sending me a code to my phone number. I could get in, but I can’t do anything else without a password. It’s a real Catch 22.

That’s terrifying. I closed mine probably 3+ years ago, but remember they said it would take a month for it to be permanently closed & the app is no longer on my phone & it’s not on my computer. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Corporate journalism was also going to end here as gutted institutions or as co opted PR firms. Private companies don’t want or need truth sold to the public. The public also doesn’t pay for truth. We have been spoiled by low cost journalism and news. Truth is now a commodity. Information has value.

Very true, sadly. Good, trusted news orgs that last have had other revenue resources (ie, printing faciities for others, mags etc, related business under its umbrella, family-owner wealth investments). Most sold, closed, raided for profit. None remain.

Just like our 'free' press in the UK. Largely owned by media barons (Murdoch), porn merchants (Desmond), foreign investors from the Middle East. And all intent on destroying our democratic processes so they can get rich quicker!

I think that gives him way more credit than he deserves. He bought a shiny toy because he thought it would get him accolades, and it did. But it turned out that the accolades were temporary and that the shiny toy was an actual newspaper. Oops.

The general feeling at the time was basically better him than Ganett or Sinclair. And for a bit there during the early "Democracy Dies In Darkness" phase of his ownership he was mostly hands off. Then he lost interest and then he got TOO interested in not pissing off Trump in the runup to 2024.

Overly-rosy view if that was the feeling. He didn’t lose interest, he shaped WaPo to better reflect his politics. Why try to soften his very deliberate choices? It’s not became a right-wing, stripped down paper by accident. www.pbs.org/newshour/amp...

pbs.orgWashington Post owner Jeff Bezos says opinion pages will defend free market and 'personal liberties'Jeff Bezos, who also owns Amazon, said on X that "viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others."

They don’t like we commoners flying in jets, going to exotic destinations, dining in nice restaurants. They want us to be held to their low standards of us they don’t want to share they want to eliminate us due to our poor place in life. Don’t you get it?!?!

He's owned the Post since 2013. Was doing a decent job for a long while, but the thing that changed is the new administration & its willingness to mess with people's money to get what they want.

Yet, who continues to buy from #Amazon? Who continues to use #FaceBook? Who continues to use #WhatsApp, #Instagram, #TilTok and #PayPal? We ALL DO! How do we put our money where our mouths are? To borrow from Lord Acton: wealth corrupts, and absolute (exteme wealth) corrupts absolutely.

What's odd is that so many on The Left condemn "the news media" for being sympathetic to Trump. If that were true, then ridding WaPo of those so-called sympathetic journalists makes no sense. The reality is that 99% of "the news media" is not biased in Trump's favor. Only a few senior execs are.

So what happens to a journalist or news presenter goes against what the senior executives want them to do? "Well you know, we all have different opinions at this here news organisation and they should all be heard," or "You're fired."

Yes, either their stories are killed or they're fired. And that's my point. News people are not the people at fault. The senior execs trying to curry favor with Trump are the problem. So blaming "the media" makes no sense. It's like blaming a clerk in a federal department for Trump's behavior.

They have hermetically sealed the information environment on the Right; they are now closing off mainstream media outlets with the intention either to drive people into that info bubble (cf the WSJ being slightly critical, offering a bit of daylight) or close off criticism.

Any absolutely wild stat pertaining to my own writing: I have cited Pre-Bezos WaPo as a source more than once a week in my 1st Trump Admin writing. I have yet to use WaPo as a source for this first year of the 2nd Trump Administration because they simply don't report on things that matter anymore.

It might actually not be profitable. Over the last 5 yrs. the Post lost 500,000 digital subscribers and 50% of it's print subscribers. Their print circulation is now under 100,000.

It’s the same logic they use to justify union busting, wage suppression, and tax avoidance: “We had no choice.” But they always have choices. They just choose power.

The deep state …? We are all hostages to a military infrastructure we call the industrial military complex…? A well established international cabal…? Billionaires unite only when it’s necessary to save themselves…? The free press have allowed themselves to be characterized as fake news…?

I suspect that having a propagandistic cheerleader for the man that can dole out federal money by the billions has a lot more economic value than reporting news, and the sports and literature desks (and about 80% of the rest of the paper) are completely extraneous to that.

bezos has Serious small dick energy…and, as my dad used to say “when a small man casts a long shadow, it can only mean the sun is setting”… hopefully the sun Has set on each one of the syphilitic band of depraved criminals, whores, deviants and parasites whose insatiable greed drives it all…

The billionaires figured if you don't like what the media is saying about you just buy it and destroy it. Larry Ellison bought CBS and put a person with no experience running a newsroom in charge of the News division. Give it a year and 60 Minutes will be gone, and CBS news will be shuttered.

What Bezos really, really cares about. Blue Origin, his rocket company that he has invested billions in, needs and wants billions of dollars in DOD contracts to help pay its bills. Here Bezos greets Defense Sec. Hegseth today at Blue Origin offices in Florida WashPost budget is a rounding error

And part of that calculation is that a depleted WaPo that turns out propaganda is still treated like a credible journalistic institution by the rest of press

Yes. It is a continuation of the measures he took last year to restrict the scope of the editorial page to topics he deemed suitable. It is the same reason Musk took control of Twitter. It’s scary how far these people will go to consolidate and hold on to power.

Noam Chomsky was analyzing this, and not the deepest analysis (avoided the monetary fraud, except a symbolic permission to republish Monetary Reform Magazine some time age. You are brainwashed if you thought there was a semblance of a significant free press this century.

Do you think the "uppity" Dutch refusual to let him dismantle their bridge to get his yacht out of dry dock might have soured him on democracy? The 2009 Occupy Wall Street movement had the right energy -- we need to recapture that & sustain it this time.

Information is what destroyed feudalism. Destroying information (ie the press) will bring back feudalism (oligarchy governance) 😞

Hey Brian, 100% agree on this. But I have some genuine questions. Why don’t you critique capitalism? Why don’t you critique the establishment Dems who’ve been enabling this fascist takeover of the country? Is there a particular reason or do you only see conservatives as the ruling oligarchic class?

"Federal officers" are operating with malicious intent and disregard for the law. The governors must convene an emergency summit to coordinate a unified defense. It is imperative that we act with courage and coordination to defend our country from criminal tyrants. govsfordemocracy.org

I was sad to cancel my subscription but had to do it when I saw which way the wind was blowing. It was good to see an article in The Atlantic by Eugene Robinson this week. I’ve missed him!

Along with all his layoffs at Amazon this is nuts. Maybe he wants to make more Melania movies and needs the dough for bigger bribes.

Bezos doesn't give a crap about the Washington Post. The Post is a financial nothing to him. But trump hates the Post and has threatened an increase in USPS fees our post office charges Amazon to retaliate against opinions and reporting in the Post. Even a 1% loss in Amazon profits is huge money.

From giants like Katharine Graham and Ben Bradlee to a pathetic runt of a person like Jeff Bezos. Shameful. What good is being a billionaire if one still has to grovel to a person like Trump?

BOYCOTT AMAZON! We are the reason that he is rich! Yes, it’s convenient 2 shop and not leave the house, however, these assholes need to recognize that WE ARE THE REASON THAT THEY ARE RICH AND WITHOUT OUR MONEY, THEY AIN’T SHIT! I’m speaking of long term boycotting!

I always had a little doubt being a post subscriber while also being an Amazon boycotter, but I quit my sub when Will Lewis took over. It's sad that the legacy of the Post won't be Watergate or the Pentagon papers anymore. Just one more thing destroyed to placate Trump.

Fuck the Washington Post, Bezos has increased my Amazon Music subscription again! Shouldn't have gone to space Jeff, shoulda just got married in Vegas Jeff, don't go blowing all your dough on shit Jeff and then think you can just bump up my subscription fee! Spotify is looking good right now!
