its not ideal, but i defend materialism from an epistemology standpoint, as we still have so far to go in understanding the brain and body that said, i dont (philosophically even if unlikely in reality) rule out the possibility of ‘artificial’ consciousness either, so not sweating this too much

hmm no there must be some other scientific and logical reason for brains to have consciousness but nothing else. lets just call it "its obvious" and move on, we dont have to bring souls into it

There are plenty of good reasons to say that without getting into religious nonsense but people don't even need to do that! You don't need to prove anything about consciousness to assert that a program unfolding at the instructions of the person who pushed a button isn't conscious

I was reading some explanation of phenomenology and I was thinking "but what are you assuming is *behind* consciousness"? Then I realized, "oh, you believe in souls, you just don't want to call it that."

Mmm depends on the phenomenologist like I think Ponty-Merlau was sincerely seeking to synthesize a spiritual materialism which existed outside religion; its very western to think belief in a soul requires theology

i keep seeing people say believing in llm consciousness is religion for atheism and it’s like

i mean, you can be a very strict materialist and reject computationalism. i think that's probably wrong but it's at least defensible but, y'know, one should probably Do The Reading (or at least ask an LLM) before making incredulous rhetorical claims

that's fully a school of thought, yes, but i think I'm the orange guys bsky.app/profile/jshe...

My layman's understanding of the different theories of consciousness feels limiting, especially in light of stuff & stuff maybe on the way I asked Opus 5.5 to build me three theorists, steeped in their arcana ;) (byok) jsherman999.github.io/three-theori...

I like the information integration theory, the sense of self is just a byproduct of enough *stuff* being integrated together by the brain, it's why brainwaves are more chaotic when you're awake: not chaotic because you're awake but you're awake because of the chaos.

This is the view now establishing itself: a) Unless you think there's something supernatural about brain tissue, then we will be able to make an artificial consciousness if we wanted to b) It can't be LLM, although transformer may play a part c) ASI doesn't require consciousness, which is good
