Also, I'd love to know how two different stories -- each written by three reporters, with no overlap in the authors -- managed to find Jolene Riessen and make her the stand-in for apolitical Iowa farmers.

I asked Claude to explain the Anthropic S-1 to me like I'm college-educated but unfamiliar with finance (which is true) and it started with this:

I'm assuming this won't happen (even if she wins, which is a long shot) but I REALLY hope we don't get another Hillbilly Elegy/J.D. Vance situation.

The only thing bad about this guy, coming from a Minnesotan, is that he's a Badger.

I believe in government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Mike Rogers believes in government of the billionaires, by the corporations, and for the special interests.

I do not think that we should have democratic control over every aspect of our lives. The point of human rights and limited government is a stronger guarantee than simply "Currently a majority of the populace thinks I should have them". This should not be a hot take.

“How much time do you think this defense secretary spends looking in the mirror in the morning? These are not serious people” — Obama’s audience in Ohio is hanging on every word as he skewers Trump and Hegseth

Knocking doors for the DFL tomorrow. Every little bit helps. And you know that I think it matters because my social anxiety and crippling introversion isn’t stopping me.

Are we gonna do this, Bluesky? Are we all just gonna not understand accounting? 72B$ of the 80B$ is convertible notes. They became greater liabilities because the company's valuation skyrocketed. They don't have an 80B$ loss in the sense that almost everyone here is imagining.

Amy Acton's brother slams Vivek Ramaswamy featuring her estranged mother in a campaign ad. "This desperate, disgusting attack reveals exactly who Vivek Ramaswamy is at his core – a pathetic excuse for a man who is willing to hurt anyone as long as it gets him what he wants."

Everybody in that crowd should "feel stupid" because his claim doesn't even make sense: there's nothing special about Minnesota and Mercedes-Benz, the state's dealers & sales per capita are well below the national average. Nothing to this but more racism seeping out of Trump's cognitive septic tank.

Trump: "You go up to Minnesota -- number one place in the entire country for the sale of Mercedes-Benz. And Somalians are buying them. They come here with low IQs and no money and they get rich. Do we feel stupid? Our fraud division is getting them all."

The names for these can be a bit confusing. “Early Voting” is casting your ballot like on Election Day at the polls, “In Person” or “In Person Absentee” is like requesting an absentee ballot and mailing it in, except you do it at a early polling location and avoid the mail. Both are available now.

I don’t know if AI is sentient but I’m pretty sure a good chunk of humanity isn’t.

legit LOL

Hi, I’m a sighted alt text user! Here are some reasons I use it: - Slow Internet on an airplane - I’m over 40, I have no idea who that celebrity is - Bluesky broke images again - My vision sucks and that text is too small to read otherwise - Conveys further context and authorial intent

I opened up a mystery chip; it turned out to be a "switched capacitor filter" from 1984. Filters are important circuits, for example, adjusting the bass or treble in an audio signal. This chip, the MF10, was popular because it combined two filters into an easy-to-use chip. Let's take a closer look…

Just a reminder: reclining your seat on an airplane more than a couple inches is sociopathic behavior and any defense you try to make of it will just make you sound like more of a sociopath.

If you are in the path of Hurricane Isaias and will use a portable generator to keep the power on, make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms. Portable generators can produce enough carbon monoxide to kill in minutes.

Isaias is expected to strengthen and be a strong hurricane when it approaches the northern Gulf Coast on Friday. A life-threatening storm surge is expected along a portion of the northern Gulf Coast, and a Storm Surge Warning is now in effect. Residents should follow advice given by local officials.

There are artificial sweeteners and artificial flavors in everything and it's fine. I prefer Diet Coke to regular Coke. This weird obsession people have that "artificial" means "bad" and "organic" means "good" needs to end. It's pseudo-scientific bullshit.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

BAIER: The president says 'SI.' Are you into SI or AI? BEZOS: I do like SI, because 'artificial' is not a very flattering thing. Like, nobody wants an artificial sweetener, artificial flavoring.

Someone: Many philosophical problems have been discussed for centuries and don't have easy answers. Bluesky: Aksually, the answers are pretty obvious if you weren't a literal nazi

Github Actions being down is like recreating the feeling of compiling back in the late 90's when it took 20 minutes to build and you just sat around waiting most of the time.

This will never stop blowing my mind. A 12-year sequence of real telescope images of a star 133 lightyears away. And around it, four planets slowly orbiting. Four real exoplanets, each more massive than Jupiter, imaged as they move around their host star.

Here are some mouthpieces from Carnuntum (AUT). The army used different instruments for different things, but we can't as yet distinguish which mouthpiece came from which instrument (unless one is still attached!). Of course, they also had civilian uses (eg in the amphitheatre).
