my nuclear-grade AI hot take that’s sure to get me cancelled until kingdom come is that refusing to use AI at all is rapidly becoming an extremely privileged lifestyle choice that feels social justice-y while actually being the complete opposite

SE Gyges@segyges.bsky.social

being anti AI is a luxury belief only available to first world people, especially Americans imagine how important machine translation is for people whose first languages aren't that common

I always hate when the limit goes up and I quickly expand to that limit. It’s like when you get a bigger house and then just accumulate more junk.

I’m now suspicious of this marketing push, framing Laika as the last soldier in a war against enshittification. It smacks of a kind of self-sorry woe-is-me accountability subsidizing. There is plenty of room in the world for amazing stories told in amazing ways.

I dug into their history a little bit and learned that they are actually the result of a hostile takeover!? That would make sense; you can only get away with making the EXACT SAME mistakes for decades if you have Someone Else’s Money to burn

I just saw wildwood and I’m so frustrated. Every Laika film since Paranorman has the same gorgeous, groundbreaking visuals and the same lackluster and arbitrary dialogue and writing. unwilling or unable to hire a screenwriter befitting their visual talent.

Dr. Dan the P(ancake Man)@anthromancer.com

Laika I want to love your movies but you keep animating them before you write them

i know comparing everyone to christian fundamentalists is a bit passé, but some people truly do believe in binary "you are good or evil" and any drop of "evil" is total and contaminates your soul, even retroactively like "tarnish everything he ever accomplished".. dude phoned it in on a sticker

trans people on bluesky are basically either extremely pro-AI or extremely anti-AI, it’s kind of a funny phenomenon if you set aside the harassment the latter do to the former

brah i didn't know there were so many trans ppl who like ai on bsky this is fucking crazy !!!!!!

My general advice for using AI for any purpose is to ask yourself: "how do I make what I am doing even more ambitious?" You do this over and over until you either hit a wall and thus learn the shape of the jagged frontier (useful!) or you find out that the AI can do more than you think (common!)

There's a lot of people who never made charts with data making Claude charts with data and I'm going to go against the tide and say I like it. I really don't care if it's messy. Lots of my programmer friends are trying to unlock analyzing data and never really have before. I think it's cool

“AI is intrinsically fascist and hegemonic!” I scream as I eject all people who aren’t able-bodied English speakers who can employ their own teams of artisans from my community

Danny Page@danny.page

r/opensource is banning all mention of projects that use AI. let’s dive in and see what else they are banning. …ah. www.reddit.com/r/opensource...

I'm sorry but banning non-English speakers because machine translation is unclean is more fascist than anything in the AI space except maybe Palantir's XAI enterprise account

hikikomorphism@hikikomorphism.bsky.social

hooooo boy we don't like this no we don't > If you don't speak English, you need to find a different community. We cannot distinguish between AI-written and AI-translated. Since you don't speak English, you can't even verify yourself if it translated correctly. www.reddit.com/r/opensource...

Its weird that bluesky attracted so many people who hate blueskys tech stack

Dr. Dan the P(ancake Man) reposted

I don't think it's a coincidence that the further down the privilege ladder you go from American middle class the attitude towards AI improves. A tech that lets a Zimbabwean teenager compete with a 40 something American suburbanite knowledge worker is going to test a lot of people's progressivism.

Sam Barrett, PhD@ai4geo.bsky.social

AI can produce slop (fucking stop it!). It can also be an accessibility tool for non-native speakers and neurodivergent people. If you reject everything AI touches without reckoning with that, you should know how privileged and exclusionary you come across.

Had someone on Twitter tell me if ConcernedApe could make Stardew Valley alone, I can make the games I want without AI. He spent ~70 hours a week for over four years making the game while partially being financially kept afloat by his partner. This is NOT an ideal to uphold.

this is the only good argument for college I’ve ever read

jae (hallowed)@fubarchitect.com

if you decide not to do college, you have to bootstrap - a core professional knowledge base - proof thereof - a professional network - a sense of yourself as "good at" your field - habits for delivering work regularly college just hands you all that at the tail end of peak lifetime neuroplasticity

AI doctor: "I see, your concerns are valid. Let's make sure we order a diagnostic to make sure we determine the root cause of what is bothering you." human doctor: "i said there's nothing wrong with you. yeah i'm sure the internet tells you lots of things, get out" *writes drug-seeking in chart*

Scott McGrath@smcgrath.phd

🧪 A new study found care recommended by LLMs costs 3.2x more than plans from treating physicians ($314 vs. $97 per visit at Medicare rates). Across 200 real clinical encounters, AI ordered 5.6x more specialist referrals and nearly 2x as many new medications. #MedSky

heres one that will melt some brains If the human using an AI is responsible for its bad outcome (And they should be) They also get the credit for its good outcome too. You cant have it both ways.

To me the right reaction to being told "I don't want to try it because it was made with AI" is not self-righteous indignation. The right reaction is to keep on working until it is undeniably the best and most useful thing it can be, out-competing alternatives by a mile.

It’s fascinating how many people have principles versus how many have social signals instead of principles. Maybe it’s my autism or whatever but the conflation of the two infuriates me when I dwell on it.

it makes me so sad that there is a subset of internet users that are against ai. it is the single biggest tool of personal liberation. you're able to do impossible things in a matter of hours. you can make everything perfect. and they choose not to, and choose to hate it. they became their parents.

Serious question: even if you reject using AI to generate code, how can I trust your software if you *at bare minimum* haven't had a frontier model review it before each release? I'm not joking even slightly here. There's a lot of DANGEROUS stuff out there humans are just gonna miss.

The antis like to try to say software using AI to help with development is necessarily more insecure, but I'm at a point where I'd have an increasingly hard time trusting devs who *don't* use AI. We're in an arms race. I want devs to keep up.

People are so caught up with “oh my god normies can make software that’s going toe to toe with the things cloistered wizards used to make”, it’s like, okay what if cloistered wizards start using the same tools? Surely they can make more impressive things! I have such a hard time understanding people

Somebody can make a crappy game with AI one shotting a prompt? Who cares! What can *YOU* make as a professional gamedev engaging with these new tools, merging in your own creativity, technical and artistic ability? How can you stand out making higher quality?

Dr. Dan the P(ancake Man) reposted

Being anti-AI coding in games makes zero sense. With AI you can quickly make amazing, customized tools and engine code for your team that were cost prohibitive to make before, and these tools empower real artists, designers and programmers to make better games.

i can't personally reduce to "pro-ai" or "anti-ai" but i am very much "pro-buying-money when someone rich is selling money at a loss" and "pro-decompiling everything and expanding the commons with anything good in there"

Olaren@olaren.dev

I'm not really pro-ai, but I think there is a certain irony in using the copyright laundering machine against big tech. we knew for a long time they didn't care about those stupid rules, but now we have a way to bypass them en masse as well (as long as they continue selling llm usage at a loss)
