NEW: Our first report on the swing voters of the 2026 midterms finds that when they are asked which policies would make them definitely vote for a Democrat, the most selected option is “raise taxes on the wealthy,” followed by “create a Medicare for All health care system.”

As another option, I want to see something like: "Receive a monthly dividend as a citizen as your share of AI-driven stock market growth for AI being trained on your work/data" I don't know the best way to word that, but it should definitely be seen in stockholder terms.

Yang was a proponent of VAT on transactions of User data between collectors (Google, FB/Meta, etc). Still should do that, but also this. Tax the crap out of AI. One day the overhead will be so minimal on the tech thats its profit margin will be 95%+, I'd bet.

I would say it should be based on royalties for use of public resources. This includes lands, mineral wealth, water usage, and pollution to clean air and water, as well as digital assets like the data stolen from members of the public used to create the AI models.

The astounding data point to me is the 16% who say that nothing would make them definitely vote for a Democrat. Then again... 34 felonies, civil SA conviction, serial SA of a child, pardoning violent criminals... Maybe the astounding part is that 16% seems low, given recent history.

@ppfa.org DO YOU SEE THIS!!! Why are you taking a stand against the billionaire's tax in CA? Ask an average CA voter about how we feel about billionaire leeches sucking our state dry while dipping out on paying their fair share of taxes. I'm furious at your shitty decision!

Any questions asked about if people would like their own taxes raised to pay for a new healthcare system that makes them make changes? There are infinite ways to have fill in the blank for all

I think many would. I'd do it for public education. And if middle class people are willing but billionaires aren't, then I'm forced to conclude it's sheer greed and not a political ideal thats convinced them..

Absolutely definitely not a majority. It would be very helpful to study what happened with the ACA and how difficult it was to push that, which was extremely carefully designed to minimize individual tax hikes. It's still was rough. There is a lot of fantasy about enacting universal coverage

I live in the deep red state of FL. Progressive policies are popular here. We've restored voting rights to incarcerated folks, raised the minnimum wage to $15, and fell just shy of the 60% threshold for recreational marijuana. Would be great if Democrats stopped being so timid/embarrassed about it.

Swing voters currently favor a Democratic candidate for Congress over a Republican by a 12-point margin, 33% to 21%. However, a plurality of swing voters (46%) remain undecided.

When provided with a list of possible criticisms of the Democratic Party, swing voters' biggest issues are that “leadership is too old and out of touch” (32%) and the party is “not doing enough to lower costs” (32%).

And while a plurality of swing voters aren’t sure which party they trust on the major issues, Democrats hold a slight advantage on inflation and the cost of living — the top issue for swing voters. Read the full report here: www.dataforprogress.org/blog/2026/7/...

dataforprogress.orgThe Swing Voters of the 2026 Midterms Want Democrats to Tax the RichSwing voters in 2026 are disproportionately made up of Trump 2024 voters who are now unsure of who they would like to vote for.

I am concerned that voters do not also mention the threat of authoritarianism, voter suppression, as well as the household economic issues. Do voters care about or even understand what democracy is?

I’m not sure the 16% of respondents who said “nothing” would make them definitely vote for a Democrat are actually swing voters. It sounds like they are just self-aware enough to be ashamed of admitting that they are maga.

"We asked a bunch of clowns with soup for brains what they thought" Well sure, why not. (If there's a "swing voter" left after the last year and a half of unrepentant conservative depravity in service to a pedophile, they need to just walk into the goddamned ocean.)

Reinforcement mechanisms are powerful. Daily routines, like buying groceries or gas, can serve as ongoing reminders that food costs are up due to 🍊’s tariffs & that gas prices are up due to 🍊’s ill conceived war with Iran. Democrats should leverage that.

I think they way they would phrase it would emphasize the word "definitely" -- in other words, that no single issue would pull them all the way there

Yes, and the natural follow-up question should be, “Are there any issues not listed in this survey that would cause you to vote for a Democratic candidate?” If there aren’t any, then the 16% cannot be reached through policy positions and should not be wooed in that way.

But in a certain sense that's actually totally rational, because if such an issue exists, then you are by definition a single-issue voter The more rational alternative, generally, is to be a multi-issue voter where your judgement is based on the combination of *multiple* issues

I'll be honest, I relieved it wasn't higher. I thought it would be near the top with how often certain Dems keep trying to throw us under the bus. You'd think it would be the number one issue if you only spoke to Rahm Emmanuel or Seth Moulton.

And an astonishing collapse in support for abortion, supposedly one of the key things that rallied support for Dems in 2022 and a major theme in 2024. Not sure about the cross-tabs of this group (i.e. if it's undecided, who makes up this group) but really moves it out of competitive talking points.

Yes, which is an apparent change from the last two election cycles where it seemed like (from campaigns and polling) abortion issues were considered a useful wedge to attract and retain swing voters from the middle. Either they're consolidated out of undecideds, or it's been dropped from salience.

OTOH, 16% said "nothing would make me definitely vote for a Democratic candidate". So, remember that swing voters includes some pretty far to the right people. IDK about this study in particular, but sometimes "swing voters" includes voters who think the GOP isn't conservative enough.

Look, the Democrats are going to give you a social media ban for under-16s and digital ID requirement for every citizen to use the internet. Project 2029 has already stated this. You won't get healthcare and they won't tax billionaires. Vote third party FFS.
