I was born left-handed in a culture that saw that as a problem that needed to be corrected. My parents didn't force me to, but I know of several peers and those older than me who were forced to become right-handed. The fact that no one cares about it now is a good thing!

My dad is a lefty and so am I. It wasn't a struggle at all for me because he made sure it wasn't. Later I found out he was really pushed to be righty, I didn't get any of that pressure.

I was forced to use my right hand to hold a spoon at an otherwise excellent Primary School. Fortunately, being anti authority I pretended to comply but switched whenever possible otherwise most of my crumble & custard would have ended up on me 😂

I was told if I didn't learn to be right-handed my arm would break. Even though I was a child when someone told me this, it didn't make any sense to me! Hahahahahahaha.

I actually thought this was a thing of the past because both the school and my parents were all “oh you’re lefty, we’ll get you left handed stuff then”. But I met someone in high school who was born mere 15 days after me and he had his parents do the “force him to write with right hand” thing 😬

Yes-my teacher forced me right handed. I can still do a lot left handed but I get “confused” sometimes? Like my brain isn’t sure. Anyways, I’m glad it isn’t that way now either. I have two left handed grandsons. No siblings or people involved (other than me)are lefty’s.

I heard that my brother used to use his left hand but the adults kept putting his crayons into his right hand as a kid. If they tried that with me, I don't remember. But even if they had tried id probably always have been left handed cos I just cannot right hand at all lol.

I grew up thinking my mom was left handed & nuns at her school ‘trained’ it out of her… turns out that my bro lied to me. He also told me there were super fast firetrucks that you couldn’t see. I believed that too for a bit. The L hand thing was until this year- good 40 yrs on that lie.

Yeap. My grandmother asked my mom "Aren't you going to force your daughter to use her right hand?" and Mom, bless her, ended that conversation flat: "No."

It's weird though that lefties are the only differently abled minority remaining that it's ok to discriminate against. Like you go to the local supermarket, 1 in 20 parking spaces reserved for wheelchair users. Then you go inside, they have 30 pairs of various scissors for sale, all right-handed.

In the 1950s, the nuns would take a ruler to my sister every time she wrote with her left hand as it was a sign of the devil. At 30 she was diagnosed with schizophrenia which I'm sure is unrelated, but I've always wondered how she might have turned out if they hadn't humiliated her in the class.

I'm 57 and a leftie and I wasn't ever forced to do anything. I can remember being given a fountain pen with a left handed nib at school and that's about it.
