It blows my mind that plain cybercrime goes unpunished when a big tech company does it. If these were a bunch of activist teenagers they'd be arrested within a day. Jail these AI ghouls.

The question of the 2000s was: What is the right business model for extracting value from the volunteer labour of massive peer production? The development of AI (first knowledge graphs, then LLMS) was the answer that took twenty years to develop.

And that's not bad! The idea that we could collate the worlds information into machine readable form was part of Wikimedia's efforts. The idea that having a layer of abstract information points that could be processed to hand off between services and be presented to users was and is a positive goal.

For fuck sake, if somebody doesn't REGULATE THE FUCK OUT OF THESE AI COMPANIES, somebody is gonna do a Luigi Mangione on Sam Altman's confused looking forehead. Won't be me though; I'm Australian, so, no easy access to guns. I wish the Americans the best of luck, though.

I can barely bring myself to call that a half-joke, this shit pisses me off so much. Wikipedia is the greatest feat of online collaboration… well, ever, marking decades of community-driven growth, research, and governance. Vandals are easy to deal with… but not when they're AI-controlled systems. 😖

Just last night I was reading the Credit Mobilier Scandal article (look, what a man does on his own time is his own business) and I just... do not think this is how a human would write "1.2 billion." Just a weird, distracting bummer to run into

I'm amazed openai isn't hosting their own mirror of Wikimedia services for stuff they're running already. All the data and software is available already, and it'd be so much quicker not needing to hit the internet for it.

Wiki is standing in the way of libertarian tech billionaires (the Epstein Class) who wants to control the common, the truth, the future. Bots and ai only destroy (except their evil masters)

Long before Wiki even. When started neferious assholes with apartheid money or wall street piramid schemes infect silicon valley ? The late 1990s? But if you’re so sensitive, we can call these worthless lunatics the ‘Thiel-class’.

It’s not “libertarian tech billionaires” or “the epstein class” IT’S THE BOURGEOISIE. THAT’S WHAT THEY ARE. This has been happening for decades, if not centuries, and is inevitable under capitalism. “The Epstein class” is a psyop tbh, it exonerates the system and just blames a select group of people

So did the "epstein class" that's just the current moniker for the leaches who own things for a living who are feeding on the people that, you know, do the actual work.

This is the usual "move fast and break other people's stuff" playbook of the tech industry. In the past we didn't care because they successfully spun their story as breaking bad, lazy companies like Cable TV and Taxis.

Now, because they are running out of industries to break and strip parts out of, they are aiming at breaking not just Wikipedia but all vulnerable parts of the internet. All these companies should be held responsible for the way their tools are used.

Unchecked capital has always taken advantage of publicly available resources and destroyed them. Grand Banks fishing, logging in the American West, fast-flowing rivers for mill power. The defining feature of capitalism is an active contempt for people being able to use the things around them.
