unbelievably stoked to be getting this out - it's been a long time coming & is the culmination of over two years of work still much to do, but this is a huge step towards opening up the network & turning it into a resilient piece of public infrastructure

bluesky (the company) can now officially disappear and the network will remain

But bluesky imposes rate limits on outside PDSes. Does that mean they still control the index? Will there be alternate indexes with fewer (or more) restrictions?

Does the network not still depend on plc.directory ?

all the referred to documentation here was just about PDSes. Are you saying everything else is self-hostable as of today too?

There still need to be a way to easily keep an up to date local copy of the data to transfer it to a new PDS in case the company disappear.
