It's worth mentioning that not all of Capcom's experiments have been hits! Kunitsu-gami was excellent but didn't sell much, and Exoprimal was a fun game hidden behind terrible marketing, confusing in-game messaging - Did you know it has HUGE setpiece boss fights and story? It kinda hides those away.

Capcom is going against the grain of western business practices: - they use the success of their biggest franchises to do a lot of R&D on risky projects - they bet on long-term goals - they keep their people - they try to be on the forefront of innovation instead of industrializing a formula

Exactly my point. The marketing was just incredibly confused. It IS kinda... but there's usually two teams racing to complete their objectives, and able to invade the other team's side to cause trouble. And there's a persistent story where you gradually unlock new maps, enemies, bosses, etc.

But those experiments and trying stuff outside of their usual wheelhouse is exactly why Capcom is still going strong. Any other studio would have given up after like the second or third Monster Hunter game landed with a wet thud in the west. Now Monster Hunter is a global mega-franchise.

Speaking of Capcom's experiments, Exoprimal is currently £8/$10 for the next 24 hours. There's usually enough players around cross-platform to keep it active, but if not, the bots are shockingly good. Round-based PvEvP hero shooter stuff but with a story & features that unfurls as you play matches

Ideally bring some friends but even if it's just botmatches, I still reckon it's worth ten bucks, and it's very interesting, weird experiment in multiplayer game structure. It's a PvP game with a final boss that'll take some time to get to!

Also much less discounted but also more universally praised is Kunitsu-gami. If you're having fun killing funky Japanese demons in Onimusha, this is more of that but as a tower defense game. They also added a whole dang NG+ second loop (remixed, tougher levels) and a roguelike challenge mode, free.

Capcom pitch meeting: "Okay, it's a sci-fi shooter game." Okay. "With dinosaurs." *salivation begins* Okay... Yes, keep going... "And a redhead." Yes! Yes, Capcom, we're almost there! "It's a new IP." YE--wait, what? It's not... it's not Dino Cr-- "Absolutely not. Fuck you. How dare you."

And even on the technical side it's not always been a complete win, See the absolute state of MH wilds upon release (it's still being fixed) DD2 was not great either, tho that's set to improve again after the patch bringing the optimizations done for Sw2 release. But overall agree with his post

Capcom's willingness to experiment and back things like that which are less likely to be hits is what I'm celebrating for sure. I also think maintaining your own engine tech instead of handing tons of money and dependencies off to Unity and Epic is gonna become a huge deal going forward...
