Many people are suggesting that it's impossible to protect privacy, so it doesn't matter which app you use. Others are trying Rednote because they are, reasonably, tired of tech oligarchies. Both are understandable reactions to the surveillance capitalism ecosystem. But there's more we can do. 🧵

We've had how many American-run data leaks we have every week? Americans apparently had their SS#'s hacked some weeks back Companies sell our data on a daily basis, at this rate THERES NO WAY TO "KEEP DATA SAFE" SO JUST LET US ENJOY WHAT WE CHOOSE TO ENJOY

Sadly, people don't care about their data anymore. They rather "give the US gov't the middle finger" than care about the CCP spying on them. In before someone says the US spys on it's people. Yeah both are bad.

as if we aren't under constant surveillance from our own companies lol. I believe the less spyware you use, the better, but still... it doesn't matter who is spying because it gets bought and sold around everywhere anyways.

This is less of a cautionary piece and more American exceptionalism propaganda. My data, my children’s data, my husband’s data have all been breached numerous times in the last year. Meta got away with it, but I should be warned about giving my data away with my consent?

I mean they can both be bad... I'd be a fan of being just as fucking cautious of meta, esp considering the direction it and the states are taking. Doesn't mean we shouldn't be cautious of this. We ought not overcounter the exceptionalism, and instead demand FOSS and open protocols,

Might also just drop this here, it's about X but to a degree it applies about Meta as well, although I might write an article to address the more general issue: bsky.app/profile/rebo...

Our private data is not safe in the us either so it’s not like it matters. Us companies and the us gov sells our data to the highest bidder anyway. We know that a lot of the propaganda about china is a lie from the government. I’d gladly give my data to the ccp just to send a middle finger to us gov

My info has been sold, stolen, hacked, breached, “Patriot Acted”, etc… so much it isn’t even mine anymore. I just monitor it to make sure I’m the only one using my financials 🤷🏻‍♀️. If anyone thinks otherwise they are so deluding themselves.

Lol its like everyone forgot about the huge issue with Cambridge Analytica. Meta has been gathering and selling our information for years. What's one more app.

Late stage capitalism is here and the system has failed. Period. People are fed up,the working class is angry. A red hot, I want to sink my teeth into some billionaires right now angry. I'll use any social media app that fucks the tech bros out of money. I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire.

Let’s be real here. It’s either we give our information to Meta and X so they can sell it to China or we just skip the middle man and go there directly. They can’t make money off of us this way 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think people are inured to that risk at this stage since, even under the most ideal circumstances, we possess only the illusion of privacy online wherever we go, whatever we use. We are crops, harvested at will, often with our unknowing permission, so frequently that there is little sense of harm.

I would hand-deliver all of my personal info to Xi Jinping just to spite the US government. Private information hasn’t been private for a while now.

I'm not interested in using platforms that are actively buying our way into our incoming "every corporation gets to smash and grab for the next 4 years", administration.Zuckerberg and Musk are PRIVATE CITIZENS. I didn't elect them for dick all of shit. Anything that takes money from them, I'm there.

I believe most of us are over there because the Meta IS censoring/ suppressing posts with view that go against Trumps, and people want a platform to post videos. But the good news is no ones making you join the app!

Musk censors anything he doesn’t like on Xitter. Bots posting hateful manipulative media are rampant on Reddit but I was banned for reporting them. US-based social media sites are broken as are their owners. They helped a Russian asset retake the WH.

I'm fairly confident most people going on XLS are fully aware of the implications. They just don't care. Meta (especially messenger) has been doing g it for years, so what if China gets a piece. It's part not caring, part doing it o .purpose to piss of both goverment and Zuck

It's not like most of us even have money for them to steal even if they wanted it LMAO I've seen a few comments from Chinese citizens on RN saying they feel bad & want to send us Americans money after seeing even our school prison food 😂

I think a lot of people are downloading Xiaohungshu as a form of protest. Our own countries apps have been stealing and selling our data for years (Facebook, Instagram, Google, Twitter, etc.) How is this any different. Ask yourself who lobbied for TikTok to be banned. That's the real question.

I traveled to China to learn about globalization and how the US does business there. We visited multiple businesses, interviewed expats, and experienced the culture. I don't know where you are hearing that the work life balance and home ownership is better but that's just not true.

That I believe was the whole point. We literally are data mines anyways so we may as well go and give our data to the very place accused of it in the first place.

Zuckerberg and Musk are both stealing data in the exact same way but nobody the senate wont do anything as they have investments in Meta and Twitter. The people know they are having their data stolen either way, so of course they will choose the ones with the better apps.

True, which is why you should have Internet security that can handle both. Just either use a burner device and account for both anyway, or use a VPN for both. It's good practice for when Meta refuses to cooperate with European regulations, and 30 Western countries + China & Russia block it.

I fucking swear this happened in a game I played and it started off good then shit hit the fan but instead of China it was North Korea and it was a new phone and not a media app i will treat this app like I do the ones here in America

What privacy? If you're online in social media apps like Facebook and Twitter you have no privacy. TikTok refugees as they're calling themselves are willingly giving their personal information to a more extreme version in Redbook out of spite. People forget we Americans are vindictive.

You’re right…we are petty! 😂 But as it turns out, we’re also kind and curious. And the rest of the world is following. Red Note is #1 in the UK, Australia, Ireland…and I’ve seen people from all over the world on Red Note. Jamaica, Russia, South Africa, all over Europe!

As if my information wasn’t already hacked, stolen, and sold by AMERICAN sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Google. I can’t wait to consensually hand over my credit card information to RedBook and buy something in the store. We already do that with Temu. And yet Temu isn’t banned.

Americans are upset about the TT ban, so in resistance to their government, they are WILLINGLY giving their data to China. Some are even saying if they ban RedNote next, people will print their information and give it to the Chinese consulate... It's soooo funny to see!

In the last 2 years, I've received at least 10 privacy breach letters from American companies that have been hacked. But, please tell me how dangerous another country is.

SAME and even had my identity somewhat stolen. Tried to file unemployment in my name as well as apply for a credit card. I already had fraud alerts set up bc I was rebuilding credit at that time & my employer actually notified me abt the unemployment b4 I even received the letter in the mail smh

I had a fake job offer for a remote job with a local business, they got my info as part of the "onboarding" process. Good thing my credit has been locked for 10 yrs.

Mine is just locked indefinitely at this point lol the fake remote jobs are super scary now because some have websites that look legitimate. I’ve had to tell a few friends noooo it’s fake!

Also...do you really think China wants the info of a middle class, single woman, with a credit score below 800? Dude, please. China couldn't give a shit less. Put down the conspiracy flavored kool-aid.

What? You think the us goverment will band the app, yet keep the website available? And what you think will happen with the American servers when they shut them down? Call them out on their crap that much i won't fight you on, but let's not do the whole "red scare" tactics again

Fwiw, I've been poking around Rednote for a few days, that hasn't been my experience. There's nothing in the rules against posting LGBTQ+ content, and I've seen a few videos from Chinese users about queer hotspots in different cities. I have seen 1 homophobic remark, which was reported and removed.

I know I'm a sample size of 1 and that it could be a potemkin village, but I think it's equally likely the US government is spreading misinformation and propaganda about the app to scare people off from it.

Yea, sorry, but I'd rather have my data in the hands of China than in Putins' hands. So, two middle fingers up to Trump, Musk, and Zuckerberg. Im learning a lot about the Chinese people, and they've been very welcoming. Refreshing from the hate and lies on US social media.

what a naive take - you are seeing what they want you so see to shape your perception. There is a reason Facebook, google, and tiktok is banned in china (they have a chinese only version of tiktok where they can curate content)

Just like we are not like Trump, the average Chinese citizen is not like Xi. The CCP has a lot of blood on its hands. Ask someone on Rednote about Tiananmen Square or the treatment of Uyghurs and see how that goes.

I like how they phrase it as if we have any digital privacy in 2025. Yesterday I saw a gigantic rabbit eating a carrot on Xiaohongshu, I figure that was probably worth whatever hypothetical privacy I might have had without Xiaohongshu

🥱 "Privacy advocates" have already failed Americans by not convincing Congress to regulate our privacy. This is what self regulation looks like - people taking their data to where they feel most comfortable.

That’s why they’re going after TikTok. Because it’s not owned by one of our oligarchs. Yet. I think something is brewing and they will take that over too in a last-minute bid to “save it” and the same shit

No one cares. People in the states have been dicked around by zuck and bulldozed into platforms that sell their data. People are tired of this shit and when given the choice, would rather willingly give their info to china than zuck. The united states cost themselves their national security.

We're all being watched, monitored, tracked all the time. I talked about how small apartments are in Manhattan and then got fed reels of small apartments in Manhattan on Facebook. T It's not that I'm ok with it, but that ship has sailed. There is no privacy. Everything is compromised.

Weird how there's no mention of meta and it's CRAZY intense data harvesting, and history of data malfeasance... I guess they're okay because they sell the info back to the US government?

Most of us are adults, we know EXACTLY what we're doing. I joined the app explicitly as a middle finger to the US government and Meta. And you know what, I've had a surprisingly nice time so far. Folks have been nothing but kind. Oh no, the CCP knows I like cats and video games now! The horror!

There isn’t any privacy anymore. It started with the Patriot Act and now we have SCOTUS punching holes in the 14th Amendment. Go talk to a friend about kayaking and then open up Facebook showing kayak ads and tell me with a straight face we have privacy.

Well, they can't turn on your video and audio, they can be sued, don't commit multiple genocides against ethnic, sexual and religious minorities, don't run black jails, secret police and extort people with their families. Because they can't. The Chinese Communist Party however can and does.

But people like Musk advocate for genocide of ethnic minorities and trans people, are too rich to be successfully sued and now he is part of the White House. He and Trump will be more than happy to do those things, they just don’t quite have the power to do it yet.

Our data is in so much worse hands here in the US. And whatever “privacy implications” there are using a Chinese app are outweighed heavily by the people in both countries unlearning propaganda and building bridges.

Unfortunately, you cannot put the genie back in the bottle. We now know that Bezos and Zuckerberg have been spying on us for years, even decades. What’s the difference if China is doing it or they are. They just bought a presidency. There’s not much left to lose.

no offense ol’ buddy ol’ pal but we’ve reached the headshot stage of critical mass in wealth inequality in this country, is not caring if china has our data should just elucidate how much we trust our own government to fuck us over
