'transform' can mean a lot of things so this is actually pretty hard to argue with

Lula has flipped the state of Amapa, which he lost to Jair Bolsonaro in the 2022 runoff by 3 percentage points. He will win it today; he is ahead by 6 percentage points with 99% of precincts reporting. He'd finished ahead by a hair in the first round, 45.7% to 45.7%.

This is just the latest example of the right doing incredible mental gymnastics to insist that “the elite” doesn’t include any of the government, any of the main political parties, the ultra wealthy or the media, but does include teachers, students and baristas

We might laugh at this or stare at it in pure disbelief but yes, this is the reactionary mind on display here. The smartypants people calling me a witless ignoranus on social media are in fact a globe-bestriding tyrannical elite that must be destroyed. Like Godzilla, but worse.

Also ‘Whites are the ones who brought blacks out of Africa and created the conditions where they failed to develop a culture of homework, respect for the law, and strong nuclear families. So we’ll need to take increasingly extreme measures to fix the ‘culture’ that produces bad outcomes"

Adam Mitchell and Claire Fox on the BBC advocating simultaneously for integration *and* for keeping migrants locked into their current jobs for 15 years on pain of deportation. What do these people think integration is? Vibes? Essays?

Netanyahu is a genocidal war criminal who belongs in the Hague, but Jews were not considered ethnic Poles based on the Polish government, and Polish Jewish last names were forced on families against their will. This kind of conspiratorial rhetoric about Jews faking their identity is gross.

I love the “not everyone can afford headphones” line. As if it’s obligatory to play shitty TikTok’s on public transport and you can’t possibly be expected to go 10 minutes without assaulting your eyeballs with mindless crap

Astonishing cope here. PISA doesn't measure rote learning, it is not based on the English curriculum. It relies heavily on comprehension and applying knowledge to a new context.

"GILRUTH: ENGLISH ROTE LEARNING A FACTOR IN LOWER SCOTS PISA SCORES" @AlistairKGrant.bsky.social for @Scotsman.com Jenny Gilruth suggested Scottish pupils trailed England in PISA scores due to Michael Gove's focus on rote learning in English schools. #TheScotsman #TomorrowsPapersToday

There is a point in this video where the viewer is invited to pause and take up to 20 minutes to guess what the guy will say next. I would not have guessed it in that time.

It is *wild* to me that in the humanities there are top universities are still doing take-home exams. Apparently it's a cost-saving thing. I wonder if employers know, or whether they could start requiring disclosure, or whether grads might start saying on their CVs that they had closed book tests...

The idea that this would be a "catastophic burden" on the economy is a real zombie fact. Even on the worst case (and wrong) scenarios dreamt up by anti-migration think-tanks it is not close to "catastrophic".

The Times, once again, calling for mass deportations of care workers and other legal migrant workers.

Yes, and it is great. I love being able to buy 3-4 year old cars at a much lower price than I would otherwise be able to, and in much better nick than they otherwise would be. Motability is an example of the government using its power to drive town costs for basically everyone in society.

Greg Shill@gregshill.com

The UK's Personal Independence Payment (PIP) program is possibly the closest-ever attempt at socialism for car ownership, now accounting for 1 in 7 new car sales in the country. I look forward to the papers studying the impacts. Gift link to WSJ article: www.wsj.com/world/uk/uni...

Do people really think that we are handing out PIP and thus motability to people with "wheat allergies" and "dyslexia"? Is there not something in their brains that thinks, hmm, that sounds unbelievable, let me check out how the DWP logs these things. Let me check how pip is awarded

"“we are all, well many of us, are certainly immigrants to some extent. My name’s an unusual one but I think my ancestors just caught an earlier boat than other people’s. This country’s been built by great immigrants" Robert Jenrick's first national campaign in Newark, 2014 byelection

There's no depth to which this guy won't sink in order to further his pathetic career.

Robert Jenrick, Shadow Chancellor for Reform UK, proposes extrajudicial killing as a solution to the small boats issue. "Deploy the Royal Marines into the Channel. If they need to use lethal force then they'll be able to do so. I think the problem would come to an end within a matter of days."

There is a local anti-asylum/anti-migration protest in Shettleston, in the east end of Glasgow, involving perhaps a hundred people, with hoodies + masks (not the same kind of balaclava mob ... but a more local group), with some attempts to block roads leading to arrests.
