Since Congress is scheduled for ANOTHER break, (2 weeks) we should consider them HOURLY employees. No work, no pay. If they don’t show up, ZERO. Way too many are “part time” employees. If they want healthcare, they have to pay. NO LUNCH MONEY, when I worked I paid for my own lunch. 40 hour work week.

Simple solution any time there is a shutdown Congress must convene from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily until there is a resolution. During the shutdown: Med. insurance for congress & families suspended. Congress/staff will not be paid. Any other perks suspended. Congress not allowed to leave DC.

I work in local government and they can’t even provide coffee for us. And these people get to vote on their own pay increases? Complete overhaul needed.

Congress is just about the cushiest job ever! Vote your raise. Best healthcare free. Pension for life after what...4 yrs? Why are we still paying them?

I don't think Congressional pay has any influence at all. These guys are not making their big money with paychecks. This is the disconnect between Congress & real people. We can not measure them by our standards. We need to understand & address the influences that make their paychecks unimportant.

The same should go for all politicians. If they don’t show up they don’t get paid. If they miss more than a set number of session for whatever reason sickness, family crisis etc. then they lose their seat. No free lunches or subsidised bars. Expenses independently scrutinised.

Put the blame squarely where it lies: At the feet of lil’ mikey johnson House speaker and trump stooge who’s famous for saying, “I dunno.” “I haven’t heard.” He is the fakest Christian and shadiest constitutional lawyer I’ve ever seen.

I think if we want people who aren’t billionaires in office, we need to cut their ability to profit off of the stock market rather than cut their benefits and pay.

Asking Congress to curtail their own incomes and perks? Even the most liberal of the lot would probably balk at that as a bridge too far! I wonder if any of them would actually do it! h'mmmm ... any suggestions?

Actually, I'd like to propose a slight modification. The speaker forgoes pay if they used their position to call a short recess. If its a break where they vote, all who vote in favor, regardless of outcome, forgo pay for the intended duration of the break. Also, no pay for office hours spent...

And why do they still get paychecks when TSA and Coast Guard don’t. If Dems take over the need a law that if shutdowns, they have to work and not get paid either! And no insider trading!

Not defending just explaining that Congressional members spend time in their home districts as well as in DC. My Senator helped me when I really needed it. They aren't on vacation when not in DC.

The election cycle never ends. Now MOC spend 4-6 hours of every "work" day fundraising for themselves or the party. Kill off Citizens United and make elections publicly funded & we might get representation that works for us. Would put about 13,000 registered congressional lobbyists out of a job tho.

Also ban lobbying and a very public, and painful execution for any caught trying to lobby as well as any caught accepting a lobbying effort. No, I'm not kidding. Lobbying will help destroy this country because it makes political efforts pay to play.

They show less than 1/3rd of the year, get paid a 6 figure salary with lots of perks most employees don't get. I love that Delta Airlines just told them they have to wait in line like everyone else, no special perks!

On more than one occasion, I have proposed that it should be legislated for Congress to remain in session WITHOUT PAY if ANY portion of the Gov't is not funded. FWIW, Newt Gingrich was the person person to use a shutdown to achieve a political objective.

Leaving for 2 weeks in the middle of a freaking war. Watching broadcasts of Congress hearings, it’s clear even when in session many are MIA. No deliberation, Republicans just show up to vote how they’ve been ordered to. What a disgraceful farce.

Most of them could go without their government pay. They make a lot of money trading stocks right before voting on policies that affect those stocks. People died waiting for them to adjust their portfolio before announcing COVID was serious.

The thing is,they’re not just working when Congress is in session. They also review & write legislation & interact w &do things 4 constituents, plus visibility stuff & negotiating. It’s a huge job if you r doing it right,& we don’t want only the wealthy in Congress,so they need to be compensated.

IF YOU ARE DOING IT RIGHT. If they weren’t rich when they were elected, they are now. Special interest groups are paying them BIGGLY. Call it donations, stock trading, etc. Not just Republicans, we’re not having a “tag day” for the Democrats either.

People regularly talk about taking money and Healthcare away from elected officials, but in a system where most officials make more on the side than from their actual paycheck, doing so would simply incentivise corruption.

Agreed. Political servants should be treated like our employees. Instead they use time to elevate status. Since Citizens United corporations give bonuses while they collect their paychecks from our tax dollars. Now we have a president manipulating insider trading for more benefits. Rigged system?

I’ve always thought Congress should be paid the Federal Minimum wage and have to buy their health insurance on the exchange. They should have to live how the poorest Americans live. Perhaps then we would weed out the grifters and they would be motivated to make things better for Americans.

They do. They buy a plan on the ACA exchange just like us. They receive a subsidy to help pay the premium but Republicans don't think we deserve a subsidy.
