but even then it's just so much easier to do background research both academically and finding information about people, and so much easier to find people to interview, so much easier to reach out to them, etc etc etc - literally everything but talking and writing is now massively easier

Also, bleakly, a lot of the stuff only us meat puppets can actually do…(actually doing reporting, whether for news or opinion) actually isn’t the thing that a large number of punters pay for and want. 🥶

Investigate reporting being expensive, lengthy, uncertain and often litigious is a real market failure. So is the insane lucrativity of writing the same anti-woke slop opinion ragebait/red meat once a week.

Indeed. To let my second wave freak flag fly for a moment: that platform is IMV incredibly exploitative of almost everyone involved, it is socially malign and it is also I fear, the wave of the future.

That's what Substack and Patreon are for, right? I can certainly think of a few Substackers (with journalistic backgrounds) who've passed audience capture into outright cult. I think they're aren't in papers only because if you're going parasocial, you might as well cut out the middleman

I don't think anyone is actually doing real news as a vtuber yet, so either there's a gap in the market or it's a terrible idea. The audience will probably try to get you to play LoL anyway

A lot of broadsheet personal finance sections (I say this having worked for one for almost 5 years) spend a lot of time writing about inheritance tax (Paid by less than 10% of people) for this very reason. It’s not that it’s not news, even if it is niche, but it gets the most clicks

recently to keep up with govt reforms at home i've been trying to read vietnamese newspapers and they all write generic nonsense with no content and then after spending a month or two grumbling that i could do a better job than these people i realised that must mean i misinterpret what their job is

And, as with the descent of politics & policy into simple solution sloganeering, we just don't want to admit that a large part of blame belongs to the general public & what they are willing/wanting to pay attention to or be told.
