To those saying “nuh-uh, ICE picked Minneapolis because they WANTED the city to rise up as one against them” - no, pretty sure they expected a scattering of blue-haired protesters they could easily crush for content + tacit support from other whites, not the organized total resistance they got.

ICE and MAGA really did bet the farm on all of Minneapolis’s white people going “oh yes, please take away our disgusting, evil non-white-foreigner neighbors, oh thank you so much.” it’s beautiful that they’ve been proven incredibly wrong about that - may the rest of the country do the same.

these idiots absolutely do assume there will be a small and easily manageable number of weird blue haired college kid queer POC and hippie activists who will go against them: they don’t really know what to do with huge numbers of enraged respectable “normal” looking white people fighting them

Yes, MAGAs have been picking blue cities to target because they BELIEVE us urban Democrats actually are mostly virtue-signaling hypocrites who are secretly as racist as they are, and they’ll thus only face a bit of easily-destroyed resistance from weird blue-haired kids - we keep proving them wrong.

Yes, the MAGAs are targeting blue cities to create Viral Content that Shows Urban Democrats Are Actually Hypocrite Cowards who Are Just as Racist As They Are: it is making them very mad that their shit-ass theory keeps being proven wildly wrong. This too is a very good thing.

And yes, a lot of MAGAs (like Stephen Miller) genuinely and truly believe in the insane theory that all the protesters are paid by George Soros (or some other wealthy Jewish entity). They are clinging to this insane, wildly bigoted theory in the face of a mountain of evidence to the contrary.

They are looking at this from their perspective. The only way they could get a large number of people together is by paying them. Hence they can't fathom anyone protesting without payment.

I don't think Miller is a true believer. I think it's worse because he knows his ideas aren't mainstream, but he doesn't care because his only goal is to establish a white supremacist nation, regardless of public opinion. I think he believes they've secured power.

They are paid to be right wing agitators by right wing billionaires They assume all people with morals are being paid like them

I wonder how much of the miscalculation has to do with Minneapolis having the largest Somali community in the nation, and the MAGAs just assumed normal (ie white) locals would be eager to be rid of them—when in fact Somali immigration has proven to be remarkably tension-free?

I’ve lived in Seattle for 34 years—the city with the 2nd or 3rd largest Somali community. My daughter’s elementary school was maybe 15% Somali. They’ve made excellent neighbors. Model immigrants. Don’t ever remember an incident or complaint.

I think it's even further in that they don't think there are any white democrats. In their minds, they'll get rid of the brown people (who are all democrats) and the whites will prove they're all in favor. They definitely don't get that a lot of white people aren't on board.

They're picking blue states to disrupt all future voting in order to have a permanent control of the government. The sequence includes creating agitation and declaring martial law and eliminating voting. This was planned years ago as part of project 2025, with protests expected against the gov.

We've seen it over & over again! They genuinely can't imagine anyone truly believing in kindness or self-sacrifice. (Cf Trump wondering why soldiers die for their country if there's nothing in it for them.) Most Minnesotans are what Nazis call race traitors & what the rest of us call decent people.

Deep down, they are convinced that everyone else is as soulless and hateful as they are. They earnestly believe that they're no worse than anyone else, that the libruls are no better than them, that everyone claiming to be kind and welcoming is just putting up a facade.

One of the finest traditions of the Midwest (especially the Upper Midwest) is neighborliness. When someone needs help, you help them. Before heavy industry, you don't survive the winters in a place like that if you don't help shovel each other out, and that's a value system that runs deep.

The media bubble surrounding some since the AM talk era, let alone post-algorithmic social media, along with lots of "yeah sure whatever" responses they've read as support rather than "shut up" had some folks thinking there's a silent majority of bigots when that's likely been wrong since the 1950s.

Yep & on vibes, that feels like how the Overton Window shifted heavily in some places (lots of media deregulation & cut backs to public broadcasting,) yet mostly stayed steady, if not became more progressive, in others (regulations & public media relatively intact until social media bypassed those)

I have never gotten their fixation on hair color. I have blue & purple streaks in my hair. It started as a WTF? during the pandemic, but I like it. In Nevada, strangers routinely complement my hair color. Go home to the South, & I get, “your hair is … interesting.” Why do they care about my hair?!?

It signals your willingness to be Different. Which goes outside a lot of conservative people's comfort. Different is dangerous, to them. Rogue. Out of (their) control.

It's one reason I think the "Wow those people are weird!" thing that started catching on during the election would've been effective. Appearances, and not wanting to stand out in a bad/wild/"crazy" way are very important things to people I know who are conservative.

it is one of the truly great pleasures of basic ass straight white guy-ness to have some meatball assume you're as bigoted as them b/c your general appearance and hit them with an icy "you fucked up" stare. nice to know that it will actually bother them.
