Yep, I travel a lot internationally and have never encountered someone who was unpleasant to me just because I’m American. I think many Americans who don’t travel abroad much seem to *hugely* overestimate the odds of non-Americans being rude to them simply for being Americans.

I've also found it rare to meet an America hater across the 6ish continents I've worked across. Most people are excited that you came to visit and are being polite and respectful (bonus points if you try to speak a couple local language greetings). They'll also generally br very curious about you!

Someone will doubtless get mad at me for this (ironically) but I suspect that those Americans who claim they’re constantly treated poorly abroad merely for being American are actually just being treated poorly because they have Rancid Vibes

Since November 2024, I’ve mostly encountered non-Americans when I travel outside of the U.S. who seem to hold a considerably rosier opinion of the average American than I do

as an European I am a bit at a loss at what to say when someone from the United States starts apologizing profusely about their country and/or home state. Have encountered the ”I'm from Texas but not like *that* a few times”

I’ve just moved to Ireland and had a bus driver incredulously ask me why I would leave a great country like the US to come to a crummy one like Ireland. He could not comprehend why I disagreed with both assessments

I’ve found the default reaction is usually “hope y’all can get your shit together”. Occasionally, negative especially if you mention working for the federal government. Also, the odd very positive in a sketchy way person.

Yeah, my non American *friends* are far more likely to hassle me than strangers. I was in Paris during the Charlottesville tiki march and I was treated with sympathy and maybe even gentleness by folks I talked to.

I live in the Cotswolds in England, where we do get the odd American tourist. They're usually nice polite people who are interested in the place they're visiting - I've never felt the urge to respond with aggro.

Not sure you know this but the Cotswolds are vastly over-represented in the settings of cozy mysteries meaning it’s super likely American tourists there are the kind of people (like me) who READ cozy mysteries 😂
