it’s good for social stability when, while the overall economy is doing OK, a huge number of educated professionals and students who held or wanted jobs they were passionate about have suddenly been pushed into unemployment and precarity by a government that’s openly hostile to them, right

it is my understanding from history that specifically persecuting educated professionals and making it much harder for college graduates to find jobs that will allow them to become professionals is a perfectly safe thing to do that never ends unpredictably

Overproducing Elites is Great and Cool Actually, which is a thing I believe the political scientists say all the time

I'm sure the molecular genetics Ph.D candidate whose work on understanding the genetic differentiators of viral virulence was abruptly ended and career disrupted won't be radicalized into experimenting with CRISPR enhancements of endemic viruses.

It triggers me when MAGA destroyed the infrastructure that created a place for “the elites” (here the definition has very little to do with money), and then they yammer on about the “overproduction of elites”

Just saw this morning that NSF grants will be cut 50% post November elections. Know 3 PhD neighbors, each with kids: Chemist, Hydrologist, Geneticist. All 3 work at the University of Utah.

I don’t think anyone is ready for the storm of neurodivergent rage that is brewing. We have a whole class of people we’ve trained to analyze systems and use that knowledge to make things happen, and you’re going to take away their pipettes and mass specs? They’re 100% intrinsically motivated.

It's bad enough that we could probably create multiple CIA-sized (but frankly probably smarter) intelligence agencies in this country out of the dispossessed academics and scientists and Ph.D. students who are spoiling for the fight of their lives with MAGA.

People are important, but it is the bureaucracy that organizes the work and creates the milieu that makes that organization resilient and successful.

Not that all academics are neurodivergent or neurotypical people wouldn’t be activists There’s just a lot of generally placid, autistic and adhd folks in academia who are used to getting things done, who are entirely motivated by things the Trump administration doesn’t understand or take seriously
