The fault here lies totally with BAFTA. THEY owe apologizes to all Black people and to Mr. Davidson. His words were involuntary and unintentional. If a disabled person had a seizure on stage, BAFTA would have deleted it. It's the same thing - unintentional uncontrollable behavior.

Confusing. What does it say about the human brain that so often when people have Tourette’s, Dementia or Alzheimer’s that their verbal outbursts are so often vile, rude and vulgar? Why is unconstrained mind so awful? Why does it go to the dark side instead of the good? Is kindness a façade?

I know it’s involuntary. I know they can’t help it. My confusion has to do with why the tics are so often negative or vulgar. Why aren’t the involuntary impulses to say positive words or phrases? That’s the part I don’t understand.

I am not a brain scientist. We don't even understand how much of the brain works. But it is clear and consistent that people affected with this spout out shit that is known to be offensive, and can't control it. It makes it hard for them to participate in society. I have empathy for them.

So I can tell you that some outbursts ARE in fact positive but why would you want to watch or hear those? It's like saying why are certain forums always negative but forgetting most people only go the extra way to criticize.

When you walk along a high cliff there is a little dark voice that says “you should jump” You never jump, of course, but occasionally you feel a wave of anxiety when you’re near that cliff Most people have had an experience like that at some point With Tourette’s they’re forced to “jump”

That may be true for some people, but I’m not one of them. I’m 55 yrs old. I can honestly say I’ve never had a thought or impulse like that. I’m intrigued by what causes impulses like that though. Natural human instinct is to survive.

From a Tourette’s POV @ Reddit: “…a common misconception about tourettes - most people with it dont actually have coprolalia which is the swearing tics you see in movies. thats only like 10-15% of cases. the majority of tics are just random sounds or movements that dont mean anything…”

Brains are extremely sensitive and complicated, the majority of us can control and filter what we want to actually say. While being unable to control it, the source has to come from somewhere…we’re not born with it. Do you know what I mean? I AM sensitive to their challenges nonetheless.

The only thing required is to know the word. That's it. It can also be more likely to use words that you specifically do not want to say. You should google coprolalia if you want to understand it.

What does involuntarily respond have to do with ACTUAL thoughts? So if I’m to “understand” your logic, the “disorder” makes the person INCAPABLE of being racist or having biases?? You would be ABSOLUTELY incorrect 💯

If you READ all that I said…instead of focusing on a portion, I said they could have prepared the audience BEFORE hand if they knew those were his types of “ticks”; which tend to be repetitive generally.

I follow a young White woman on TikTok who has Tourette’s and her “ticks” will have generalizations sometimes based upon the subject. I bought this in black “(tick) once you go BLACK, you never go back “ and proceed on with the conversation.

The question is “Are these his generally specific and normal “ticks” or something…ELSE??”, that’s at issue. If known, it could have been announced prior so everyone would understand. Having Tourette Syndrome doesn’t make one incapable of subconscious or open biases.

The BBC are 100% to blame; they edited out Gaza related speeches ffs! It isn't the least bit surprising that 99% of the blame toward John Davidson is from Americans, cos they're so used to living in a f**ked up racist society with a f**ked up racist history they assume the whole world is the same.

Poor guy is all I’ll say. Imagine being terrified you’ll say something heinous, it popping into your head and it coming out. That’s exactly what happened. Sod the faux outrage over this, it’s involuntary.

Maybe if you have a fucking issue with saying that without self control. Put your hand over your fucking mouth until the black person leaves. Problem solved. I am not giving any grace for that. I don’t hear them insulting, Jews or people of Asian descent nor pasty white folks.

It’s actually not a terrible analogy. It is a perfect one. My husband has complex Tourette’s and experiences all of the tic types. When he has a full tic attack it often does look remarkably like an epileptic seizure. It is a neurological disorder. There is no choice.

The fault does not lie with this man, it’s on BAFTA who decided to not censor THAT word, but censored Free Palestine. It did not have to air that hurtful, racist word…it was a choice.

I completely understand Tourette’s. This dude has lived with this his whole life. He knows how to accommodate himself. That’s a child you are showing. This dude is grown grown. Keep grasping.

Is he known to have that kind of Tourettes? "Everyone with tourettes screams obscenities" is a stereotype. Only 10% of sufferers have this. If he actually has a documented case of that kind, then people probably shouldn't go after him. If he doesn't, then it feels like using a stereotype for cover

He still could’ve said “I’m sorry that came out.” The presenters would have likely said “no worries” given his disability. It’s trying to ignore what came out, being dismissive, and blithe is the problem.

I feel so sorry for him and anyone that was hurt by his words. But he has a disability. The word means nothing to his Tourette’s

No one is “punishing” him for his disability. What I think people are saying is simply a statement could’ve been or he could’ve said “guys, I’m sorry that came out.” Simple.

The poor guy has enough with Tourette. Now he has to face being called a racist by people that have no idea about tourette at all. Makes me so freaking mad. 🤬

Interesting how this dilemma — the need to accept without judgment people who suffer from Tourette’s, while also respecting the natural desire for people to not be awkwardly insulted with slurs when making a voluntary public appearance — was anticipated in a scene in the 2017 movie ‘The Square’.

1) he was there because a movie about his life was being honored 2) no, that’s not how society works. You don’t get to exile people for having a disability

These comments are definitely something. I think it’s a tough situation and I don’t think anyone is arguing people shouldn’t be offended, but rather providing an explanation for those who may not understand tics. Words can be hurtful and people can feel hurt, you feel what you feel.

But people are arguing that people shouldn’t be offended. I think people do understand that he has a disability. I think what his defenders don’t understand is that people aren’t asking him to apologize for his disability but simply to say “guys, I’m sorry that came out”. Simple. No harm. No foul.

He actually did reach out to the people presenting directly to apologize so anyone saying he isn’t apologizing or acknowledging the words he said are misinformed

The context for the discussion based on my understanding was the nothing statement “if anyone was offended” made by Cummings. I personally don’t know if he reached out to the presenters and/or what was said between them if that did happen.

bsky.app/profile/asht... Watching this young woman made me realize how much I have no clue about. We should all strive not to judge anyone. #bekind #bebetter #listen

I really appreciate this TikToker with Tourette syndrome, Shay, for taking the time to educate so many of us (including me) about her disability and coprolalia in light of what happened at the BAFTAs with John Davidson when Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage. I learned a lot.

Sad for John D but also the guys presenting the award who were shouted at. Regardless of the cause of the outburst it must still have been hurtful and even though those guys will have had worse in their daily lives it is terrible nonetheless. Good for Alan Cumming for apologising to them.

Why TF did they air that? Would they air a blind presenter stumbling on stage? A wheelchair user whose wheel gets temporarily stuck on a curtain?

"Since the fallout, Davidson’s team shares that he’s reached out to the studio handling “Sinners” in order to directly apologize to Jordan, Lindo and production designer Hannah Beachler." From the article in Corey's post: bsky.app/profile/core...

okay what the fuck was the BBC doing with that broadcast? because at this point it could be mistaken for intentional… variety.com/2026/film/aw...

It doesn't work that way, I have non verbal Tourette's and I cannot control my tics. I've listened to people try and tell me all my life to just ignore it and don't do the tics. I cannot for the life of me DO that and some idiots keep thinking I'm faking it, so damned annoying!

I have tourettes, my whole life have seen people take the most rare and extreme cases like this as the model for tourettes. People claiming have tourettes to explain their often deliberate racial outbursts, or random adhd behavior to use that as an excuse to justify or misclassify another condition.

I've seen many questionable 'influencers' out there who do stuff like that for attention and views. He may have tourettes and have legitimate tics. But the content seemed very timely and specific for being involuntary.

Here's another explanation by another person with Tourette's bsky.app/profile/then...

A couple decades ago I met & was friends w/ someone that has tourette syndrome & coprolalia. It was heartbreaking to watch and so hard for her to handle due to her embarrassment. This perfectly explains how BAFTA should have handled the whole issue that happened Sunday evening. They got it so wrong

I've read as much Oliver Sacks as the next guy. I can only assume that as an activist for an involuntary condition, he would refuse to wear some sort of gag or impediment under sensitive circumstances. And please dont ask why he should, it's painfully obvious.

Simply *knowing* the word places it into your vocabulary, because everyone’s contains words they may never intend to say, yet still understand.

No one should be required to absorb your harm for any reason. Forcing Black people to endure hate and ignorance for centuries, then say they should take this one, too? No. Black people were harmed here. Declining to accept excuses of any kind is not ableist. It’s protecting their peace.

I mean, if I had a mental condition that has good odds of producing an outburst on a live televised production...I'd probably stay home.

Why should he? It’s like saying someone with a severe physical disability that may offend someone should never be seen in public, just in case. 🙄

If you have a mental condition so severe you risk loudly expelling racial slurs before a televised audience...hopefully you've got a good apologist ready to make excuses for you.

While extremely understandable to be upset about this please educate yourself about Tourette’s. People often say the last thing they are thinking or want to say, the literal opposite. It is incredibly debilitating and NOT intentional.

People should be mature enough to understand that in some rare contexts words don't matter. I worked with a lovely woman who would break off mid-sentence to brutally curse me and then resume the conversation. The truth is, the last thing she wanted to be was rude, hence the tic.

They are the ones to blame. It should been beeped and it was all a brutal disrespect towards the presenters and towards the tourette guy. They should be held accountable.

Do not leave out the bbc, they could’ve bleeped it out. And I blame them especially. But then again, most the bbc’s management was appointed by the Tories…

I’m a firm disbeliever in coprolalia. Why does no one ever have tics that make them say nice things or random words? Just racial slurs and curse words? Yeah, no. My friend had Tourette’s. Physical tics, blinking, arm jerks, turning head, random noises and face making, that’s Tourette’s.

Well for one you got to understand he has tourettes, and besides the N word isn't really a problem because blacks use it all the time, if they really hated it they would stand up against people who are perpetuating the racial stereotype, they would stop using it themselves.

That's not how that works how about we all grow and work together, and stop calling each other racist names, it's not right for anyone to use those words, I'm not the arbiter of someone's morality if they want to use it they can use but they can't then say that it's wrong for that word to be used

This was a racist slur, broadcast on a world stage. That should have been dealt with immediately and properly. There must be serious questions for the institutions involved - and clear, direct apologies to the individuals targeted and to all those affected.

No one is asking him 2 apologize 4 his disability. However, people are saying that he could’ve made the apology like “I’m sorry that came out. Please forgive me.” Then, given his condition, people would’ve likely said. “No worries.” However, the apology of “if anyone was offended” was dismissive.

Sure, BAFTA & the BBC had control over its editing decisions. That’s one focal point of this. However, the other focal point is on the individual. Once again, he’s not apologizing for his disability. Just the “oh shit” unintentional part of what happened. Individual, person to person. Humanity.

I’m not a medical professional, so I don’t really have a valid opinion on Tourette’s, but I do have an opinion on how the BAFTAs and the BBC handled it, they dropped the ball big time.

I wonder if Tourette’s syndrome is dramatically under-diagnosed and would explain the foul-mouthed ad hominem hatred we see exploding everywhere? 🧐

No, that’s exactly how it works: bsky.app/profile/asht...

My friend & I will be having a conversation and she will say, “f*ck you big dummy” then continue with whatever we are talking about. She will do this many times while we are together. When she arrives at my house she will yell it to me as she gets out of her car. I always greet her with a warm hug.

So many people in this thread would be happier if disabled people just stayed home so their symptoms wouldn't bother anyone. So many have zero empathy for the struggles disabled people face when trying to be part of the world. So many are disgusting by disabilities. You don't see us as human.

I've been the victim of a racially-motivated hate crime. They left me lying on the ground, beaten and bleeding as they yelled a racial epithet -- the N-word, ironically -- and ran away. The world of difference between that and a random Tourette's syndrome tic canNOT be overstated. Chill, SJWs.🍀

Unless you want to provoke a national incident, don’t speak in public. Come on. Common sense here. Doesn’t matter if he’s handicapped. They know this could happen. Now people keep blabbing about a totally preventable issue. Just nuts.

He was there because they were giving awards out on a film where HE was the subject. People who want to keep disabled people invisible can GET FUCKED.

Oh , he was deeply "mortified" by the thought of offending??? But he hasn't publicly apologized to the 2 people he deeply offended with that slur. Also, he was able to offend 2 black people with a racial slur but didn't call any white people. 🤔

I like how open you are about your intellectual struggles -- it's almost as inspiring as the Tourette's syndrome story. You have a lot in common with him, well except that guy can't help saying offensive shit. And, He doesn't need to apologize because he has Tourette's.

No. He shouted out at other times too, before making the decision to leave the venue. A quick search and you'd be able to find out what happened.
